Lyons 9 New Trier 8
PERIOD 1
Jordan Palmer and Joey Ryan both scored 2 times in the first three minutes
of the opening quarter to give New Trier a 4-0 lead over Lyons.
PERIOD 2
Peter Dore opened the period with a goal for Lyons to trim the Trevians'
lead to 4-1. The teams traded possessions with nothing doing, with New Trier
coming the closest to scoring but hitting the crossbar with an outside shot
attempt. Matt Weiser responds for New Trier to make it 5-1, then Ryan
blocked Dore's attempt after an ejection to keep the lead at four goals.
Ryan scored on the other end, flipping a loose ball over Sekula to give the
Trevians a 6-1 advantage. Shannon converted a penalty with less than two
minutes until halftime, while the Trevians failed to score after an ejection
in the closing seconds of the half.
PERIOD 3
After a stop, Lyons drew an ejection, but John Friesen made a key save to
keep LT at bay. The Lions got the ball back, however, and Dore scored his
second goal to cut the lead to 6-3. Palmer's outside shot hit the right
post, but Reid McCulloch was on hand to slam home the rebound. Friesen
blocked Shannon's two-meter attempt, but Shannon grabbed the rebound and
scored with a no-look shot from the left post. Josh Hirt added a goal in the
final minute of the period to make the score 7-5, but Palmer slotted one in
from the left side after an ejection to give New Trier an 8-5 lead. In the
closing seconds, Sean McMahon added a goal for the Lions to make it 8-6
after three periods.
PERIOD 4
Dore finds Hirt driving into 2m and Lyons has quickly cut the New Trier lead
to 8-7. Shannon scores from outside 7m and just like that we are tied at 8-8
with 4:23 left to play. On the Trevians' next possession, Jason Bartha
smacked the post with a shot, Ryan got the rebound and drew an ejection
before New Trier called timeout. Sekula got his fingers on the Trevians'
shot attempt, however, giving Lyons a chance to take their first lead. But
Bartha and McCulloch each made blocks to get New Trier back in possession.
The Lyons defense held up and they quickly called a timeout with 1:15 left
to play in regulation. Hirt then found Shannon open at two meters, and he
was deliberate in slamming a shot into the right corner with one minute
remaining to give Lyons their first lead at 9-8. Lyons stopped New Trier on
the other end and ran the shot clock down, giving New Trier the ball with
0:15 left after their final timeout. After working the ball on the
perimeter, Jordan Palmer shot from the left side and clanged the left post;
Lyons got the loose ball and ran the clock out on a 9-8 victory over the
Trevians.
