SATURDAY'S SECTIONAL FINALS

BOYS

Barrington Sectional

Schaumburg 11 Conant 9

Mike Gergen and Randy Carr both scored 4 goals and the Schaumburg defense held off a second-half charge by Conant to emerge with an 11-9 win over the Cougars on Saturday night. Matt McMullen added 2 goals in the Saxons' win. Brandon Grzegorek, Jon Burke, and Palmer Lynch each scored 2 times in the loss for Conant. Below are the in-game updates:

Randy Carr scored 2 goals in the opening quarter as Schaumburg took early control of their contest with Conant and leads 4-1.

The Saxons increased their lead to 7-2 by halftime, outscoring the Cougars 3-1 in the second period.

In the third quarter, the Cougars clawed their way back into the game with a mini-run to cut the Saxons' advantage to 8-4.

Two more quick goals from Conant has narrowed the gap to 8-6 late in the third period.

The teams trade scores in the last two minutes of the third period, so they go to quarter four with Schaumburg leading 9-7.

Both teams score once in the early stages of quarter four; 10-8 Schaumburg with 5:11 remaining.

Down to the last three minutes of the game, with Conant unable to get closer than two goals of their neighbors.

Conant calls a timeout at the 1:43 mark with the score still stuck at 11-9.

Schaumburg's defense gets the job done in the final two minutes, so the Saxons qualify for state with an 11-9 victory!

 

Fenwick Sectional

Fenwick 24 Oak Park 6

Matt Farmer scored 8 goals and Connor Brown registered 6 scores as Fenwick put in a dominant performance in beating Oak Park 24-6 on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies kept things relatively close in the first half, but the Friars outscored OPRF 13-0 in the final fourteen minutes of play en route to the big win. Dan Kelly, Dom Gallo, Ted Herbstritt, and Viken Huening each added 2 scores in the win for Fenwick.

 

GBN Sectional

Loyola 16 New Trier 11

Charlie Dowdle totaled 6 goals as Loyola defeated New Trier 16-11 to make a triumphant return to the state tourney for the second straight year. Brendan Hulseman, Jordan Hodur, Tim Netzel, and Will LeCompte each added 2 scores in the win for the Ramblers. Jordan Palmer and Nate Urban each scored 3 times and Sam Skinner added 2 scores in the loss for the Trevians.

 

LWN Sectional

Sandburg 10 H-F 4

Matt Veldman recorded 5 goals and Tony Rogina (12 saves) and the Sandburg defense held H-F scoreless for more than two-and-a-half quarters en route to a 10-4 sectional final win on Saturday. Balys Gintautas and Cody Corridino each added 2 scores for the Eagles. Caleb Peterson, Kevin Kuchta, Luke Dobben, and Nick Thiros each tallied one score each in the loss for the Vikings.

 

Lyons Sectional

Lyons 15 Brother Rice 5

LT outscored Brother Rice 10-2 in the second half to pull away from the Crusaders and earn a 15-5 state-qualifying win on Saturday at their home pool. David Sekula, Joe Shannon, and Kovas Zygas each recorded 4 scores, Michael Brown tacked on 3 goals, and Andrew Brown saved 8 shots in the Lions' victory. Mike Mulcrone put in 2 scores in the loss for the Crusaders.

 

Neuqua Sectional

Naperville Central 19 Naperville North 5

Kyle Rickert recorded 5 goals and Kristian Altuve added 4 scores as Naperville Central took care of business against their rivals to earn a 19-5 victory and return to the state tournament. Dennis Herron and Pat May each registered 3 scores in the Redhawks' win. Andrew Dunlop scored 2 times to lead the Huskies in a season-ending loss.

 

UIC Sectional

St Ignatius 12 Latin 9

Mark Alvarado poured in 8 goals and Kevin Barth scored 2 times as St Ignatius held off Latin 12-9 to advance to the state tournament next weekend in Lincolnshire. Mike Fratto also made 15 saves in the Wolfpack's win. Jacob Himmel registered 4 scores, James Ruggiero totaled 3 goals, and Eddie Wickes added 2 goals in the loss for the Romans.

 

Vernon Hills Sectional

McHenry 17 Palatine 7

Kyle Braun scored 5 goals and Scott Dabrowski added 4 scores as McHenry took control of their game with Palatine early and never looked back in a 17-7 sectional final win over Palatine. Lucas Matthys added 3 scores, Andrew Hertel notched 2 goals, and Alex Birkle made 16 saves in the Warriors' state-qualifying victory. John Giuliano scored 3 times and both Dylan Weissman and Kamil Mulawa added 2 goals in the loss for the Pirates.


GIRLS

Barrington Sectional

Fremd 14 Barrington 0

Julie Conrath and the Vikings' defense completely shutout upset-minded Barrington 14-0 on Saturday afternoon to move on to the state finals next weekend. Conrath recorded 14 saves and picked a good time to earn her first shutout of the season. Meanwhile, Emily McCarthy scored 4 goals, Sam del Prado notched 3 scores, and both Sam Kirby and Sam Matuszewski put in 2 goals to lead the Vikings' offensive attack.
 

Fenwick Sectional

Fenwick 14 Oak Park 0

Mackenzie Bonk and the Fenwick defense held Oak Park scoreless as the Friars earned a 14-0 win to advance to the state tourney next weekend. Annie Collins scored 5 goals, Haley Wickham added 3 scores, and Cara Borkovec added 2 goals to lead the Friars to the victory.

 

GBN Sectional

Loyola 11 New Trier 7

The Ramblers built up an 8-2 lead and held off a late charge by New Trier to earn an 11-7 win to return to the state tournament. Evan Swenson scored 4 goals and Brittany Wallace, Caitlin Sershon, and Sarah Gross each added 2 scores in the victory for Loyola. Erika Nothnagel tallied 3 scores in the loss for the Trevians.

 

LWN Sectional

Homewood-Flossmoor 11 Bremen 2

H-F earned their second straight state tournament berth by putting the clamps down on the Bremen offense and winning 11-2 at LWN on Saturday. Sophie Schloen made 12 saves, while Michelle Mayer scored 4 times, Rebecca Mathews recorded 3 goals, and Hannah Ongman put in 2 goals in the Vikings' win. Nora Plank scored both the first and last goals of the game to lead Bremen with 2 scores in the loss.

 

Lyons Sectional

Mother McAuley 7 Lyons 3

Third-seeded Mother McAuley stunned the defending champions 7-3 in their home pool in the sectional finals to advance to state for the first time since 2008. Adrianna Izquerido tallied 4 scores and Sarah Abbott stopped 12 shots in the Mighty Macs' win. Jackie Knightly, Amy Kopale, and Vicky Arciniega each added one score for McAuley in the winning effort. Lizzy Kosin tallied all 3 goals for the Lions in the losing effort.

 

Neuqua Sectional

Naperville Central 13 Naperville North 6

Abbey Kerth paved the way for Naperville Central to get back to the state tournament with 7 goals in the Redhawks' 13-6 win over Naperville North on Saturday. Claire Wirtz and Gracie May combined to score 5 times in the win for NC. Audrey Chien led North with 3 goals and Jessie Lietz added 2 scores in the losing effort.

 

UIC Sectional

St Ignatius 11 Lane 3

Rebecca Insalaco scored 5 goals and Kate Stelnicki added 2 scores to lead St Ignatius to an 11-3 win over Lane on Saturday. Kate Murphy also made 13 saves in the win for the Wolfpack, who qualified for the state finals for the second straight season.

 

Vernon Hills Sectional

Stevenson 9 Mundelein 5

The third time was the charm for Stevenson, as they used their speed to outlast Mundelein for the first time in 2011 to earn a 9-5 win over their rivals. Cheyenne Montijo and Karen Lowry each scored 3 times, helping the Patriots build 9-2 lead by the end of the third quarter. Stevenson actually trailed 2-1 after the period before going on an 8-0 run to put the game out of reach. Sam Petti added 2 scores and Erin McCook scored once in the win, while goalie Lisa Michalowski made 16 saves for the Patriots. Amanda Boothe led the Mustangs with 2 goals and Emily Tylka made 11 saves in the loss.
