GAME PREVIEWS (Saturday, May 10)

 

 

 

FEATURED EVENT

MCAC TOURNAMENT
The Catholic League Tournament gets underway on Thursday with a play-in game sandwiched in between four quarterfinals. The winners advance to Saturday's semifinal round before the event culminates with consolation and championship games. The Friars earned the top-seed after an undefeated conference season, but expect some epic battles between several of the top teams in the state. Loyola stunned the hosts in the title game last season, but any number of teams enter the event with a chance to claim the coveted title.

 

OTHER KEY EVENTS

CSL TOURNAMENT

The Central Suburban League's conference tournament kicks off on Wednesday with three quarterfinal round games; New Trier earned an opening-round bye while Evanston, Maine East and Niles West are not involved due to a previously scheduled tournament. The event continues on Thursday with the consolation round, followed by Friday's semifinals and Saturday's championship game. The Trevians beat GBS to claim the coveted title in 2013.

 

METEA VALLEY TOURNAMENT
Metea Valley hosts a Co-Ed Tournament on Saturday, with Barrington, Bremen, and Elk Grove joining the festivities for six games apiece for both the boys and girls. The hosts get things going bright and early with a girls' game against Elk Grove.

 

NAPERVILLE NORTH TOURNAMENT
The Huskies' mini-tournament features three teams and three games; both LWN at STC North are in town beginning at 10:00am with a matchup between the hosts and the North Stars.

 

NILES WEST TOURNAMENT
The Wolves play host to Evanston, Lockport, and Niles West in a six-game event that gets underway on Saturday morning.

 

STEVENSON TOURNAMENT
The boys' half of the Stevenson Tournament gets underway early on Saturday morning with a rematch between the hosts and Naperville Central (the Patriots won last weekend's meeting 10-8). Joining the fray soon after are both Lincoln-Way Central and Neuqua Valley for a grand total of six games that go well into the late afternoon.

 

WSC TOURNAMENT
The Lions will look to repeat as West Suburban Conference champions this weekend, but they will face a handful of challenges from the likes of Hinsdale Central, Hinsdale South, Morton, Oak Park, and York. The proceedings begin on Friday with two quarterfinal games between Morton-York and HC-HS, followed by the semifinal round on Saturday morning. The title game gets underway between the two semifinal round winners at 12:45pm in Elmhurst.

 

VERNON HILLS TOURNAMENT
The Cougars host a six-team, nine-game tournament that begins on Saturday morning; Conant, Latin, Libertyville, LWE, and Vernon Hills are all in attendance. Conant beat Libertyville for the title in last year's edition.

The Catholic League Tournament starts on Friday with three quarterfinal round games, with the winners joining Fenwick on Saturday morning for the semifinal round. The Friars earned a bye after a perfect MCAC season, but there could be a few surprises in store in an event that saw St Ignatius beat Fenwick in the semifinals before the Wolfpack lost to Mother McAuley in the title game. Who will walk out of this epic event with the highly-coveted Catholic League crown?

 

OTHER KEY EVENTS

CSL TOURNAMENT

The Central Suburban League's conference tournament gets underway early in the week with one play-in game and continues throughout the week until a champion is crowned on Saturday morning. The girls' version of the Stevenson Tournament features four top 25 teams that have their sights set  on fine tuning things for the postseason. Lincoln-Way Central, Naperville Central, and Neuqua Valley join the host Patriots for a six-game event that alternates games with the boys' teams in Lincolnshire on Saturday.

CSL TOURNAMENT

Maine South 11 Glenbrook North 4

Makai DeNeve-Arnam and Phil Wachowski each scored 3 goals to lead the Hawks to an 11-4 victory over GBN on Saturday.

 

Glenbrook North 7 New Trier 4

Brant Boczek and Jake Nelson each recorded 3 goals to lead GBS to a 7-4 win over New Trier in the CSL Invite on Saturday. Chandler Tempest and Jack Vorwald both tallied 2 scores in the loss for the Trevians.

 

 

MCAC TOURNAMENT
Fenwick 12 DLS 8

Andrew Bertschy and Danny Farmer both scored 3 goals and Ryan Masi notched 2 scores as Fenwick beat DLS 12-8 to advance to the MCAC title game. David Durkin, DJ Perez, and Omar Calderon all scored once in the win for the Friars.

 

Loyola 12 St Ignatius 7

Cameron Shewchuck and George Finn both scored 3 goals and Trevor Prince made 12 saves as Loyola topped St Ignatius 12-7 in the semifinals of the MCAC Tournament. Matt Kearney and Tom Baker both scored 2 goals while Jack Nickele and Ragen Murphy each scored once in the victory. Shane Hughes put in 4 goals, John Reyes notched 2 scores, and Billy Barth recorded one goal for SICP.

 

St Ignatius 12 DLS 10

The Wolfpack outscored DLS 3-0 down the stretch to walk away with a 12-10 victory over the Meteors in the third-place game of the Catholic League tournament. Billy Barth totaled 3 goals and both John Reyes and Shane Hughes scored 2 goals in the winning effort. Andreas Christy, Brenden Stelmach, and Tom Dowling each added one score for the Wolfpack. Robert Rodriguez netted 5 goals in the loss for DLS.

 

Loyola 9 Fenwick 8

Tom Baker scored the game-winning goal after an ejection and the Loyola defense did not allow a shot on Fenwick's final possession as the Ramblers defeated Fenwick 9-8 to claim their second straight Catholic League title. Cameron Shewchuck scored 3 goals, Ragen Murphy scored 2 times (including a critical game tying goal), while Andrew Hodur, George Finn, and Matt Kearney each scored once in the victory. Trevor Prince also stopped 9 shots in the win for Loyola. Omar Calderon led Fenwick with 3 goals, Danny Farmer notched 2 scores, and David Durkin, DJ Perez, and Ryan Masi all scored once in the loss. Mike Hill also recorded 17 saves for the Friars.

 

 

METEA VALLEY TOURNAMENT
Barrington 22 Elk Grove 6

Chase Lesniak recorded 5 goals and Nick Cogswell added 2 scores in Barrington's 22-6 victory over Elk Grove. Mitch Gavars, Pat Hogan, Sam Miseyka, and Sean Gerbich each tallied 2 scores in the Broncos' win.

 

Barrington 13 Bremen 6

Chase Lesniak netted 5 goals and Sam Miseyka put in 3 scores to help the Broncos get past Bremen 13-6. Marshall Mathias and Mitch Gavars each scored 2 times in the winning effort.

 

Barrington 17 Metea Valley 2

Chase Lesniak and Nick Cogswell both scored 5 goals and Matt Gouskos notched 3 scores as Barrington knocked off the hosts 17-2 to clinch the Metea Valley Tournament title. Sam Misyeka also scored 2 tiimes in the win.

 

 

NAPERVILLE NORTH TOURNAMENT
Naperville North 15 STC North 5

Nolan Roberts recorded 4 goals and BD Chapman, Gianmarco Duin, and Joe Tomashek each totaled 2 goals in the Huskies' 15-5 victory over STC North. John Pretet netted 5 goals and drew 6 ejections in the loss for the North Stars. Collin Bawolek also made 7 saves on the defensive end for STC North.

 

STC North 10 Lincoln-Way North 3

John Pretet scored 5 times and drew 5 ejections and Collin Bawolek made 8 saves as the North Stars got past LWN 10-3. Nick Traxler added 2 scores and the trio of Chris Stanek, Ross Davis, and Tim Steele all scored once in the winning effort.

 

Naperville North 13 Lincoln-Way North 5

Nolan Roberts tallied 5 scores and both Drake McClure and Joe Tomashek netted 2 scores as the Huskies knocked off LWN 13-5.

 

 

STEVENSON TOURNAMENT
Stevenson 14 Lincoln-Way Central 6

Mitchell Sokolsky racked up 6 goals and both Kurt Holzer and Zach Stephens scored 2 goals as the hosts topped LWC 14-6. Alex Divanyan, Alex Kapecki, Liam Holzer, and Luke Gable-Preze each added a goal in the win for the Patriots. Ryan Sterling scored 3 goals and Pat Burke put in 2 goals in the loss for Central.

 

Neuqua Valley 9 Lincoln-Way Central 7

Ian Ivkovich and Simon Shatinsky both scored 3 goals and John Hedderman made 8 saves as Neuqua defeated LWC 9-7. Scott DePuy added 2 goals, Jon Dusenberry scored once, and Joey Dalesandro made 7 steals and added 4 assists in the winning effort. Tim Stygar notched 3 scores and Kyle Forsythe, Conor McGowan, Pat Burke, and Ryan Sterling each scored once for the Knights.

 

Naperville Central 11 Lincoln-Way Central 3

Joe Bigenwald scored 5 goals in the opening period and Christian May netted 3 scores to help Naperville Central get past LWC 11-3.

 

Naperville Central 9 Stevenson 8

Zach Stephens' lob attempt hit the crossbar with five seconds left and the Redhawks hung on for a 9-8 win over Stevenson. Stephens had just cut the lead to one with a penalty shot, but he just missed on the equalizing goal after the Patriots' forced a turnover. Kyle Jackson scored a key goal with less than two minutes left to give Central a 9-7 lead before the hosts nearly mounted a late-game comeback. Statistics coming soon.

 

Naperville Central 11 Neuqua Valley 10

Christian May, Connor Lamb, Joe Bigenwald, and Ryan Donahue each scored 2 goals as the Redhawks fended off Neuqua Valley 11-10. Joey Dalesandro and Scott DePuy both notched 3 scores and Simon Shatinsky scored 2 times in the loss for the Wildcats. Lucas Becker and Jon Dusenberry each put in one goal and Austin Mollway blocked 9 shots as well for Neuqua Valley.

 

Stevenson 11 Neuqua Valley 8

Zach Stephens scored 3 goals and both Michael Taiberg and Mitchell Sokolsky scored 2 times to help the Patriots beat Neuqua Valley 11-8. Simon Shatinsky scored 4 goals, Scott DePuy put in 3 goals, and Joey Dalesandro totaled one goal and 6 steals in the loss for the Wildcats.

 

 

WSC TOURNAMENT
Oak Park 11 York 9

Mark Hallman registered 5 goals and Lawrence Cozzi netted 2 scores in the Huskies' 11-9 win over Oak Park.

 

Oak Park 8 Lyons 7

Josh Gronwold scored the game-winning goal with 0:44 left in regulation as Oak Park defeated Lyons 8-7 to win the WSC title. Mark Hallman scored 3 goals, Robbie Wickes tallied 2 scores, and Gronwold, Alex West, and Lawrence Cozzi each scored once in the win.

 

OTHER KEY GAMES

Stagg 9 Waubonsie Valley 8

Nick Amendola and Peter Krivanec each scored 3 goals and Lane Holin made 13 saves as the Chargers earned a 9-8 nonconference win over Waubonsie Valley.

Maine East 5 New Trier 3

Medina Husejnovic and Sarah Pham each scored 2 goals and Maria Protic added one score as the Blue Demons beat New Trier 5-3 in the third-place game of the CSL Tournament. Keelin Frank recorded 2 scores and Kaleigh Dolan added one goal in the loss for the Trevians.

 

Evanston 8 Glenbrook North 3

Aliya Abdelhak notched 3 scores and both Courtney Gregori and Karissa McBride scored 2 times as the Wildkits beat GBN 8-3 to win the CSL Tournament. Honore Collins added one goal and Olivia Everhart made 8 saves in the victory. Colleen Doolan, Lindsay Fraser, and Patricia Doolan each scored once in the loss for the Spartans.

 

 

MCAC TOURNAMENT

Fenwick 13 Loyola 7

Colleen Barron scored 6 goals and Catie Wallace netted 4 scores as the Friars beat Loyola 13-7 to move to the title game of the MCAC Tournament. Marta Considine scored 4 times, Alana Dean scored 2 goals, Emily Barr chipped in with one score, and Colleen Ahern stopped 12 shots in the Ramblers' loss.

 

St Ignatius 11 Mother McAuley 3

Tammy Stelnicki recorded 5 goals to lead St Ignatius to an 11-3 victory over Mother McAuley on Saturday in the Catholic League Tournament semifinals.

 

Mother McAuley 11 Loyola 10

Fran Williamson drilled a shot from 7m with just over one minute remaining to lift Mother McAuley over Loyola 11-10 in the consolation game of the MCAC Tournament. Clare Bryar registered 5 scores and Williamson scored 4 times in the win for the Mighty Macs. Marta Considine led the Ramblers with 5 goals, Claire Voss netted 4 scores, and Emily Barr tallied one score in the losing effort. Colleen Ahern led the defense with 11 saves.

 

Fenwick 8 St Ignatius 7

Colleen Barron scored the game-winning goal after collecting her penalty shot attempt that hit the left post to lift Fenwick to an 8-7 victory over St Ignatius that saw the Friars win the MCAC Tournament. The goal finished off a 3-0 run in the closing stages of a tightly-contested Catholic League final, a rally which started when goalie Lexi Buglio made a save and assisted Catie Wallace on a counterattack goal a few minutes earlier. Barron also scored a key goal from 7m to tie the game before providing the additional heroics for the hosts.

 

The Wolfpack looked like they had control of the contest earlier in the second half, as Tammy Stelnicki converted a penalty shot, Maggie Maloney scored on a lob shot from the left side, and Stelnicki made a perimeter steal and went coast-to-coast to score and give SICP a 7-5 advantage. But the Friars' defense did not allow a goal in the game's final six minutes, which played a key role in their comeback.

 

Earlier in the game, Maloney put the Wolfpack ahead 1-0, but Wallace responded with 2 straight goals and Barron gave Fenwick a 3-1 advantage late in the opening period. Diana Fernandez got the Wolfpack to within one with a goal at the end of the period, but Wallace quickly responded once again to give Fenwick a 4-2 lead. St Ignatius finished the first half with goals from Fernandez and Stephania Lopez, tying the score at 4-4 at halftime.

 

Wallace led the Friars with 4 goals, Barron notched 3 scores, and Alexa Ovalle scored a key second half goal. Fernandez, Stelnicki, and Maloney each scored 2 goals and Lopez added one score in the loss for the Wolfpack.

 

 

METEA VALLEY TOURNAMENT
Bremen 10 Barrington 1

Hannah Schultz totaled 5 goals and Melissa Barrios made 8 saves and allowed one goal in Bremen's 10-1 triumph over Barrington.

 

Bremen  13 Elk Grove 1

Hannah Schultz poured in 6 goals and both Jacky Zuniga and Leah Wood tallied 3 scores as Bremen beat Elk Grove 13-1. Elizabeth Minnich led the defense with 7 steals plus one goal, while goalie Melissa Barrios made 5 saves and allowed one score.

 

Bremen 15 Metea Valley 1

Hannah Schultz recorded 6 goals, Sarah Minnich totaled 3 scores, and Melissa Barrios blocked 5 shots in the Red Jaguars' 15-1 victory over Metea Valley.

 

 

MUNDELEIN TOURNAMENT
Mundelein 8 Wheeling 4

Emily Garcia scored 5 goals to lead the Mustangs to an 8-4 victory over Wheeling. Allie Boothe, Ellie Wingender, and Emily Dodd each added one goal in the Mundelein win. Theresa Godlewski notched 3 scores, Argelia Diaz tallied one score, and Elizabeth Wargo saved 8 shots in the Wildcats' loss.

 

Bradley 14 Latin 4

Celine Dalde scored 4 times and both Katie Lehman and Rachel Thorson netted 2 scores in Bradley's 14-4 triumph over Latin.

 

Wheeling 13 Latin 0

Elizabeth Wargo earned a shutout and Theresa Godlewski scored 5 times as Wheeling got past Latin 13-0. Argelia Diaz added 3 scores and Adrienne Rozmus, Juliana Isayeva, Paulina Stolarski, Rachel Ropski, and Shannon Richards each scored once in the win.

 

Mundelein 13 Latin 3

Lauren Blake scored 3 goals and both Allie Booth and Emily Garcia scored 2 times as the Mustangs beat Latin 13-3 on Saturday.

 

Mundelein 15 Bradley 10

Allie Boothe and Emily Garcia both recorded 6 goals to lift Mundelein over Bradley 15-10. Anna Ward, Emily Dodd, and Lauren Blake each added one score in the Mustangs' victory. Rachel Thorson tallied 3 scores and both Celine Dalde and Samantha Ashline notched 2 scores in the losing effort.

 

Wheeling 12 Bradley 4

Theresa Godlewski registered 6 scores and Argelia Diaz netted 3 goals in Wheeling's 12-4 victory over Bradley. Shannon Richards added 2 scores and Rachel Ropski scored once in the winning effort. Celine Dalde and Rachel Thorson both scored 2 times in the loss for the Boilers.

 

 

NAPERVILLE NORTH TOURNAMENT
Naperville North 11 STC North 2

Jilian Eiken recorded 4 goals, Katie Horn netted 3 scores, and Taylor Stoner put in 2 goals as the Huskies beat STC North 11-2. Elle Mattern and Helen Wei each scored once in the win for the hosts. Katie Difiglio and Nicole Guyett each registered one score in the loss.

 

STC North 7 Lincoln-Way North 3

Katie Quinn and Nicole Guyett each scored 3 goals and Monica Guyett chipped in with one score as the North Stars beat LWN 7-3. Niki Beringer put in 2 goals and Jessica Larson scored once in the losing effort.

 

Naperville North 13 Lincoln-Way North 6

Jilian Eiken registered 5 goals and Katie Horn scored 3 times as the Huskies beat LWN 13-6 on Saturday. Elle Mattern and Lauren Liberio each tallied 2 scores and Dani DiMatteo added one score in the win. Emily Chesire, Cassidy DeGraff, Missy Wortel, and Niki Beringer all scored once in the loss for the Phoenix.

 

 

STEVENSON TOURNAMENT
Stevenson 10 Lincoln-Way Central 1

Allison Travetto recorded 5 goals and Melissa Gartenberg tallied 3 scores as the Patriots earned a 10-1 victory over LWC. Bridget Wynne and Erin Kempers each scored once in the win for the hosts. Becky Callen also made 10 saves in the winning effort for Stevenson. Liz Klock scored the lone goal and Sabrina Miglorini made 13 saves in the loss.

 

Lincoln-Way Central 4 Neuqua Valley 2

Liz Klock scored 2 goals, both Cailey Davern and Delaney Shepard scored once, and Sabrina Miglorini made 9 saves as the Knights used a strong defensive effort to beat Neuqua Valley 4-2. Morgan Miller and Sammi Jaquez each scored once and Issi French made 9 stops in the losing effort.

 

Naperville Central 6 Lincoln-Way Central 4

Beth Ryan and Kaela Codo each registered 2 goals and both Alli Hansen and Kristina Altuve scored once as the Redhawks outscored the Knights 3-1 in the final period to earn a 6-4 victory over LWC. Delaney Shepard scored 2 goals and both Kristi Howe and Liz Klock scored once in the loss for the Knights.

 

Stevenson 8 Naperville Central 6

Melissa Gartenberg scored 3 goals and Ashley Oliver scored 2 times as Stevenson held off Naperville Central 8-6 on Saturday. Allison Travetto, Annika Hotchkiss, and Autumn Hoang each added one score in the winning effort. Jessica Fox tallied 3 scores in the loss for the Redhawks.

 

Naperville Central 9 Neuqua Valley 5

The Redhawks bounced back from their previous loss by beating Neuqua Valley 9-5 on Saturday. Stats for Central coming soon. Kaitlyn Gorski and Morgan Miller both scored 2 goals and Issi French made 11 saves in the loss. Wyli Erlichman also scored once in the losing effort.

 

Stevenson 15 Neuqua Valley 4

Melissa Gartenberg recorded 5 goals and Allison Travetto totaled 4 scores as Stevenson downed Neuqua Valley 15-4 on Saturday. Autumn Hoang and Jordan Landau each netted 2 goals and Becky Callen made 11 stops in the win for the hosts. Morgan Miller scored all 4 goals for the Wildcats and Amy Blencowe stopped 7 shots in the loss.

 

 

WSC TOURNAMENT
York 16 Hinsdale South 9

Grace Achepohl scored 5 goals and the trio of Lauren Tamm, Izzy Gil, and Perri Brinkmeier each scored 2 goals as York beat Hinsdale South 16-9. Sarah Lewand made 7 saves in the win for the Dukes.

 

Oak Park 13 Hinsdale Central 2

Katie Appell scored 5 times and Jordin Hale made 15 saves and contributed 3 assists in the Huskies' 13-2 victory over Hinsdale Central. Anna Vogel and Genevieve Curry both recorded 2 goals while Jilly Cronin, Claire Rolfes, Elizabeth Williams, and Maddie Wolfe each scored once in the win. Cronin made 5 steals on the defensive end as well.

 

Lyons 11 York 7

Allie Kurth totaled 3 goals and 3 assists and Jessie Wittenberg made 8 saves as the Lions beat York 11-7 to advance to the WSC Tournament title game. Haley Hughes, Julia Cohen, and Meredith Land each put in 2 scores and Frankie Delleman led the defense with 5 steals (and a goal). Emma Hirt also scored once in the winning effort. Perri Brinkmeier totaled 4 goals and Sarah Lewand made 10 saves in the loss for the Dukes.

 

Oak Park 6 Lyons 4 (OT)

The Huskies outlasted Lyons 6-4 in overtime to win the WSC Tournament on Saturday. Katie Appell tallied 3 goals and made 6 steals, Genevieve Curry totaled 2 scores, 5 steals, and 3 assists, and goalie Jordin Hale stopped 18 shots in the victory. Mia Andreoli also chipped in with one goal in the win. Haley Hughes scored 2 goals and both Erin Yang and Meredith Land scored once for LT, as they overcame a 3-1 deficit entering the fourth quarter to send the game to extra time.
