FEATURED EVENT
MSL CHAMPIONSHIP
Wheeling 11 Conant 10 (OT)
Argelia Diaz scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period
and goalie Jenna Pink made a key steal late in the game to help Wheeling
win their first Mid-Suburban League title game over Conant 11-10 on
Thursday. Theresa Godlewski poured in 7 goals, scored the game-tying
goal, and drew the key ejection that led to Diaz' heroics.
The Cougars led throughout most of the game, with Carmen Rosas' 5 goals
pacing the offense and Maddy Demaret making several key saves to lead
the defensive effort. After Godlewski had given the Wildcats a late 8-7
lead, Conant called on Demaret to provide a lifeline as she nailed a
buzzer-beater from mid-pool at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
Along with Rosas' 5 goals, Kaitlyn Claffey tallied 2 scores, and Demaret,
Angie Skittone, and Sam Wooley each scored one goal in the loss for the
Cougars.
LIVE PLAY-BY-PLAY
QUARTER 1: Theresa Godlewski scored from outside 9m to give Wheeling a
1-0 lead, but Carmen Rosas netted the equalizer from 3m to tie the score
at 1-1 after the opening period.
CONANT 1 WHEELING 1
QUARTER 2: Godlewski put the Wildcats ahead just twelve seconds into the
period, but Rosas responded with two straight goals to give Conant a 3-2
lead. Kaitlyn Claffey scored from the right wing to give the Cougars a
4-2 advantage, but Emily Sowa answered with her first goal to cut the
lead to 4-3. Conant's Angie Skittone increased the lead to two goals
with a powerplay goal, but Godlewski put in her third goal of the half
to make the score 5-4 at the break.
CONANT 5 WHEELING 4
QUARTER 3: Conant had a chance to go ahead by two quickly after an
ejection, but Jenna Pink made a big save to keep the Cougars at bay.
After a stop on the other end, Rosas fought through a double-team to
catch, shoot, and score to give Conant a 6-4 advantage. Shannon Richards
got the Wildcats back on the scoreboard with a goal from 7m, but Claffey
answered with her second goal on the other end to put the Cougars ahead
7-5 late in the period.
CONANT 7 WHEELING 5
QUARTER 4: Rebound goal for Sowa to start the final period cuts the
Cougars' lead to 7-6. Conant has a chance at the other end, but again
Pink comes up big in goal to make a key save. Wheeling takes a TO with
4:58 left. Godlewski scores the equalizer coming out of the timeout to
tie the game at 7-7. The teams trade possessions before Conant looks to
have a great scoring opportunity, but Ropski makes a big steal with 1:31
left. Nothing doing on the offensive end for the Wildcats, but they make
another key stop to set up their offense. Godlewski!!!!!!!!! The junior
scores from 7m out with 0:40 left in regulation to give the Wildcats an
8-7 lead! Pink makes a save at the other end with 0:10 left...and now we
have a long delay due to a clock malfunction. And...Conant has one last
chance with 0:06 left, and it's an unbelievable shot from mid-pool from
goalie Maddy Demaret to send the game to overtime! Unbelievable!
CONANT 8 WHEELING 8
OVERTIME 1: Rosas draws a penalty and converts to give Conant a 9-8
lead. After a stop, Sam Wooley nets her first goal to give the Cougars a
10-8 lead midway through the first overtime period. Godlewski tallied

outside 9m at the buzzer as Conant will take a one goal lead into the
second overtime period.
CONANT 10 WHEELING 9
OVERTIME 2: Godlewski strikes first from 7m and with less than two
minutes in OT #2 we are all knotted up at 10-10. Backhand from Rosas
just misses, then superhero Demaret with a huge block to come up big for
Conant again. Godlewski draws another ejection, Wheeling calls timeout
with 1:42 left, and just about everyone needs a breather (in the crowd).
Argelia Diaz scores from 2m out after the ejection as Wheeling takes an
11-10 lead! Conant looks to respond but Pink comes out of the net to
make a steal, the Wildcats play keep away until the Cougars get the ball
back and call timeout with :04 left in the second overtime. Demaret will
