ST PATRICK TOURNAMENT
Crusaders
Grind Their Way To St Patrick Title
Brother Rice suffered an 8-6 loss to Waubonsie Valley on Friday,
lost to Niles West on Saturday morning, yet somehow endured to beat the
hosts 10-1 in the eventual title game to win the St Patrick Tournament via
tiebreaker on Saturday night. Kevin Mayer scored 13 goals and Cal Kennedy
made 40 saves as Rice beat H-F on Friday, then topped the Shamrocks on
Saturday and beat the rest field by goals allowed and all that to win the
event. Niles West and the hosts both went 3-1 over the weekend to finish
second and third, respectively.
Friday's Game Recaps
Niles West 9 Fremd 8
Max Romanelli recorded 5 goals, including the game-winner with 0:44 left
in regulation, as Niles West beat Fremd 9-8 on Friday evening. Steven
Renko added 2 scores and Matt Leffler saved 13 shots in the win for the
Wolves.
Brother Rice 8 Homewood-Flossmoor 5
Dan Whalen, Dave Jackson and Ian Disteldorf each scored 2 times as Brother
Rice fended off H-F by an 8-5 margin on Friday. Kevin Mayer and Luke Healy
both added one score and Cal Kennedy blocked 13 shots for the Crusaders.
Jakobi McClellan stopped 8 shots and five different players scored once in
the loss for the Vikings.
Waubonsie Valley 8 Brother Rice 6
The Warriors shook things up in their bracket with an 8-6 win over Brother
Rice, setting up a showdown with H-F on Saturday morning to determine
which team will play in the first-place bracket (all three teams still
have a chance to advance via tiebreaker if H-F wins). In the loss, Kevin
Mayer tallied 3 goals, Dan Birmingham scored 2 times, and Matt Bachler
scored once. Cal Kennedy also blocked 7 shots for Rice.
St Patrick 8 Whitney Young 6
The Shamrocks closed out the evening with an 8-6 victory over Whitney
Young. Seth Hughes recorded 6 goals in the loss for the Dolphins.
Saturday's Game Recaps
Niles West 10 Lincoln-Way East 3
Max Romanelli scored 5 goals and Matt Leffler totaled 9 blocks and 5
steals as Niles West beat LWE 10-3.
Homewood-Flossmoor 12 Waubonsie Valley 8
Kevin Kuchta recorded 8 goals and Broc Thompson netted 2 scores to
help H-F bounce back from Friday's loss to Brother Rice with a 12-8
win over Waubonsie Valley.
Niles West 8 Brother Rice 7
Max Romanelli scored 3 times and Matt Leffler made 11 saves in the
Wolves' 8-7 win over Brother Rice. Kevin Mayer recorded 3 goals,
Matt Bachler added 2 scores, and Dave Jackson put in one in the loss
for the Crusaders. Cal Kennedy blocked 10 shots for Rice.
Brother Rice 10 St Patrick 1
Kevin Mayer poured in 6 goals and Cal Kennedy blocked 14 shots and
only allowed one goal on a penalty shot as Brother Rice walked away
with the St Patrick Tournament title after beating the hosts 10-1.
Dan Whalen also scored 2 times and both Ian Disteldorf and Matt
Bachler tallied one score for the winners.
