GAME PREVIEWS (Friday, April 12)

 

 

 

TOURNAMENT TO WATCH

LYONS TOURNAMENT

The Lions' Tournament gets underway on Friday night with a four-game slate; the hosts are in a group that consists of St Ignatius and Stevenson, while Loyola, Oak Park, and York match up for a three-game set that will determine Saturday's championship round lineup.

 

OTHER KEY TOURNAMENTS

BREMEN TOURNAMENT

The Silver Snakes' five-team tournament includes Argo, Bradley, Maine East, and STC East and employs a round-robin format of ten games beginning on Friday night.

 

DESMET TOURNAMENT

Fenwick and DeLaSalle both head to Missouri to take on some of the Show-Me-State's best teams; the Friars won the event last season and take on Lindbergh and Oakville in Friday's preliminary round. DLS must face #1 SLUH before also taking on Kirkwood on Friday night.

 

NAPERVILLE TOURNAMENT

The 'Best of the West' event features nine teams and two pools (NC and NN on Friday); Naperville North looks to defend their title but will have to do so against a stacked field. Hinsdale Central, Lake Forest, Naperville Central, and GBS are all Top 25 teams, while the likes of Buffalo Grove, Lincoln-Way Central, GBN, and Mundelein will ensure that their are no easy contests in Naperville over the weekend.

 

ST PATRICK TOURNAMENT

The Shamrocks' tournament features a dynamic group of competitive teams, with Brother Rice, Fremd, Homewood-Flossmoor, Niles West and the hosts leading the list of contenders. Also in attendance are Evanston, Whitney Young, and Lincoln-Way East as the nine teams will play a grand total of 18 games over the weekend at an event that H-F won in a shootout over the hosts last season.

 

SANDBURG TOURNAMENT

All eight teams playing in the Sandburg Tournament get underway on Friday evening. The hosts begin a defense of their own event's title against STC North, which is followed by games between Andrew-Conant and Lane-RB. In the nightcap, LWN and Prospect square off before the teams take a break before a 12-game schedule on Saturday.

 


 

GAME PREVIEWS (Friday, April 12)

 

 

 

MATCH OF THE DAY

6:00pm #6 New Trier at #9 Loyola

The Ramblers and Trevians meet up in what could once again serve as a preview of the Glenbrook Sectional's final game. The winner of this April 12 contest could also be in line for the all-important top seed at that sectional in May.

 

KEEP AN EYE ON

6:30pm #13 Sandburg at #16 Fremd

The Eagles head north to take on the Vikings in a nonconference affair that the hosts won 14-5 in the previous season.

 

OTHER KEY TOURNAMENTS

JENISON TOURNAMENT

Naperville Central travels to Michigan to do battle with some of The Great Lakes State's best water polo teams in a two day event beginning on Friday night. The Redhawks get started in difficult fashion when they take on #1 Rockford on Friday night.

 

ST VIATOR TOURNAMENT

Lincoln-Way Central begins their title defense in Arlington Heights at the St Viator Tournament against the likes of Buffalo Grove, Lockport, Maine South, Palatine, Prospect, STC North and the hosts.

 

YORK TOURNAMENT

The Dukes' six-team tournament begins on Friday night with a four-game slate; Andrew and Barrington square off in the tournament opener, while the T-Bolts also face the hosts two games later. R-B takes on both Bremen and Napervillle North in their group on Friday night. The action then continues on Saturday with two additional games before the championship round begins. Naperville North knocked off Barrington in the title game of last year's event.

BREMEN TOURNAMENT

Bremen 12 Bradley 11

Tony Zdanavicius scored the game-winning goal with 3:38 left in the final period as Bremen beat Bradley 12-11. Quinn Johnson recorded 7 goals and Gabe Rojas-Stein added 2 goals in the victory for the Silver Snakes.

 

DESMET TOURNAMENT

Fenwick 13 Lindbergh 7

Ryan Masi tallied 4 scores, Matt Bresnahan netted 3 goals, and Justin White notched 2 scores in Fenwick's 13-7 victory over Lindbergh.

 

Fenwick 17 Oakville 6

Andrew Bertschy, Danny Farmer, and Matt Bresnahan each scored 3 times and Justin White and Tony Perez both recorded 2 goals in the Friars' 17-6 win over Oakville.

 

LYONS TOURNAMENT

Loyola 11 York 4

Jack Considine recorded 4 goals and both Cameron Shewchuck and George Finn both tallied 2 scores in the Ramblers 11-4 win over York.

 

Stevenson 12 St Ignatius 7

Taylor Baretz recorded 4 goals and both Mitchell Sokolsky and Remy Dalloul scored 3 times as Stevenson defeated St Ignatius 12-7.

 

Oak Park 12 York 7

Mark Hallman scored 4 goals and Alex Darnall chipped in with 3 scores in Oak Park's 12-7 win over York. Chris Brandt also registered 2 scores in the win for the Huskies.

 

Lyons 12 St Ignatius 2

Peter Dore recorded 5 goals to help lead the Lions past St Ignatius 12-2. Shane Hughes and Jesus Juarez both netted one score in the loss for the Wolfpack.

 

NAPERVILLE TOURNAMENT

Naperville North 13 Buffalo Grove 1

Drake McClure, Eric Curia, and Gianmarco Duin each scored 3 times and Nolan Roberts put in 2 goals as the Huskies opened the Best of the West Tournament with a dominant 13-1 win over Buffalo Grove.

 

Glenbrook South 9 Buffalo Grove 4

Seamus Heneghan registered 5 scores in the Titans' 9-4 victory over Buffalo Grove.

 

Hinsdale Central 13 Mundelein 5

Brogan O'Doherty and George Koulouris combined to score 9 goals in the Red Devils' 13-5 victory over Mundelein. Connor Black recorded 4 goals and Jason Rehor scored once for the Mustangs.

 

Naperville North 12 Glenbrook South 2

Nolan Roberts tallied 3 scores and Adam Nyland, Gianmarco Duin, and Luke Landiak each scored 2 goals in Naperville North's 12-2 triumph over GBS.

 

Mundelein 16 Glenbrook North 8

Connor Black scored 7 goals and Jason Rehor chipped in with 4 scores as Mundelein defeated GBN 16-8.

 

ST PATRICK TOURNAMENT

Niles West 9 Fremd 8

Max Romanelli recorded 5 goals, including the game-winner with 0:44 left in regulation, as Niles West beat Fremd 9-8 on Friday evening. Steven Renko added 2 scores and Matt Lefler saved 13 shots in the win for the Wolves.

 

Brother Rice 8 Homewood-Flossmoor 5

Dan Whalen, Dave Jackson, and Ian Disteldorf each scored 2 times as Brother Rice fended off H-F by an 8-5 margin on Friday. Kevin Mayer and Luke Healy both added one score and Cal Kennedy blocked 13 shots for the Crusaders. Jakobi McClellan stopped 8 shots and five different players scored once in the loss for the Vikings.

 

Waubonsie Valley 8 Brother Rice 6

The Warriors shook things up in their bracket with an 8-6 win over Brother Rice, setting up a showdown with H-F on Saturday morning to determine which team will play in the first-place bracket (all three teams still have a chance to advance via tiebreaker if H-F wins). In the loss, Kevin Mayer tallied 3 goals, Dan Birmingham scored 2 times, and Matt Bachler scored once. Cal Kennedy also blocked 7 shots for Rice.

 

St Patrick 8 Whitney Young 6

The Shamrocks closed out the evening with an 8-6 victory over Whitney Young. Seth Hughes recorded 6 goals in the loss for the Dolphins.

 

OTHER KEY GAMES

Maine South 8 Elk Grove 5

Matt Kramer scored 3 times to lead the Hawks to an 8-5 victory over Elk Grove in nonconference action. Brian Touhy, Jeff Siwek, Phil Wachowski, Robert Mazza, and Ryan Pattullo each scored once in the win.

MATCH OF THE DAY

New Trier 11 Loyola 10

Samantha Padavic connected on a last-second shot to lift New Trier over Loyola 11-10 on Friday. Lindsey Siegel led the Trevians with 5 goals, Alexana Astor scored 4 times, and Padavic netted 2 scores. Hannah Caywood also made 12 saves and Kelsey Willian added a key goal in the Trevians' win. Marta Considine totaled 5 goals, Allison Sajnaj put in 2 goals, and Evan Swenson and Katie Lynch each scored once in the losing effort. Meredith O'Brien also made 7 saves for Loyola.

 

JENISON TOURNAMENT

Rockford 8 Naperville Central 7 (3 OT)

Michigan's top-ranked team Rockford outlasted Naperville Central 8-7 in three overtimes at the Jenison Tournament on Friday night. Kristina Altuve and Madison Nervig both scored 2 times and Erin Reagan made 8 saves in the loss for the Redhawks.

 

ST VIATOR TOURNAMENT

Prospect 8 Palatine 6

The Knights jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening quarter and held off a fourth quarter rally to earn an 8-6 win over Palatine. Caroline Wojtas scored 3 times, Rachel Chumbook registered 2 scores, Emily Seidl notched one score, and Kim Butler made 15 saves in the losing effort.

 

STC North 6 St Viator 1

Sarah Stern recorded 2 goals and Angelica Villa, Kelsey Theile, Nicole Guyett, and Tori Garcia each put in one goal as the North Stars beat the hosts 6-1.

 

Palatine 9 Lockport 3

Rachel Chumbook scored 5 goals, Caroline Wojtas scored 4 times and drew 5 ejections, and Kim Butler stopped 12 shots in Palatine's 9-3 win over Lockport. Christine Bafia netted 3 scores in the loss for the Porters.

 

Lincoln-Way Central 7 STC North 3

The Knights began their title defense with a 7-3 victory over STC North on Friday night. In the loss, Sarah Stern recorded all 3 goals for the North Stars.

 

YORK TOURNAMENT

Barrington 9 Andrew 3

The Fillies began their quest to return to the title game of the York Tournament with a 9-3 victory over the T-Bolts. Lisa Danhauer poured in 5 goals while Catherine Byron and Kelly Meckert each scored 2 times for the winners. Rachel Fus put in 2 goals, Megan Hofer added one score, and Anna Tamulonis rejected 14 shots in the loss.

 

Andrew 12 York 9

Megan Hofer scored 7 goals and Anna Tamulonis blocked 13 shots in the T-Bolts' 12-9 victory over York. Genna McCarthy pitched in with 2 goals and Alicia Tebo, Annamarie Lettiere, and Courtney Carter each tallied one score for the victors.

Fremd 10 Sandburg 9

Mandy Borre, Samantha Barry, Sam DiCanio, and Tori Boldt each scored 2 goals as Fremd beat Sandburg 10-9 on Friday night. Emma Hoffman and Jena Teragawachi both added one goal in the Vikings' win.

 

St Ignatius 12 Marian 6

Becky Insalaco scored 5 times as St Ignatius defeated Marian 12-6 on Friday. Paige Wieser put in 3 goals, Emily Amadio added 2 scores, and Isabelle Keating netted one score in the loss for the Spartans.
