GAME PREVIEWS (Saturday, March 23)

TOURNAMENT TO WATCH

MUNDELEIN TOURNAMENT

Mundelein's fresh new tournament casts a wide variety of teams from across the Chicagoland-area in an eight-team, sixteen-game event that begins on Friday afternoon. The hosts belong to a group with New Trier, Hoffman, and Lindbergh; the other group features Fremd, Hinsdale Central, Lockport, and St Pats. The event culminates with a championship round beginning at 2:30pm on Saturday.

OTHER KEY TOURNAMENTS

NILES WEST TOURNAMENT

The Wolves will try to repeat as tournament champions of their own event like they did in 2012 when they host an eight-team event that kicks off on Friday afternoon. Niles West plays in a group that contains Von Steuben, St Rita, and Waubonsie Valley; the other group pits DeLaSalle, Maine West, Metea Valley, and Stagg against one another. The championship round decides the fate of all eight teams and begins at 1pm on Saturday.

NORTHSIDE TOURNAMENT

Northside's annual tournament gets started on Saturday morning with five CPS schools mixing it up in a ten-game event. The hosts are joined by Lane, Mather, Morgan Park, and Taft. Which team will gain some early momentum in a light preview of the CPS Tournament due up in May?

SCHAUMBURG TOURNAMENT

The Saxons' annual tournament is a two-day, eight-team, sixteen-game event that features teams that range from Missouri (Lafayette) to Chicago (Whitney Young) and just about everywhere else in between (Hinsdale South, McHenry, St Charles East, Wheeling, York).

STEVENSON TOURNAMENT

Three Missouri-based teams head to Lincolnshire to do battle with the hosts, Oak Park, and Libertyville in a six-team, nine-game showdown titled the "I-55 Showdown" - the Illinois teams went 5-4 at last year's event. Who will gain the upper-hand in 2013 when it's Illinois versus Missouri?

TOURNAMENT TO WATCH

LYONS TOURNAMENT

Lyons will look to repeat as champions of their annual tournament when they welcome Waubonsie Valley, Evanston, Mundelein, Neuqua, and Stevenson to Lagrange for a six-team event that begins on Saturday morning.

OTHER KEY TOURNAMENTS

LWE TOURNAMENT

Lincoln-Way East's annual bracket-style tournament kicks off on Friday night with two pools being used to host games. The hosts are joined by Andrew, Lincoln-Way North, and Richards in their group, while LWC, R-B, and Lockport all head to Lincoln-Way West where they will take on the Phoenix in the other group. The opening-round winners will meet in the semifinal round, with the winners playing for the title at East on Saturday afternoon. LWN won the event in 2012.

MUNDELEIN TOURNAMENT

Trevians Look Sharp In Winning Mundelein Tournament
New Trier rolled to a perfect 4-0 mark at the first annual Mundelein Tournament to remain undefeated in 2013 and claim their second tournament title of the young season. Jordan Palmer led the way by scoring 14 goals in wins over Hoffman, Lindbergh, Mundelein, and Lockport; the Trevians used a fourth quarter surge to beat the Porters 12-5 in the title game on Saturday night. Fremd beat Hoffman for the second time this year to claim third place, the hosts edged St Patrick 4-3 in the fifth-place game, and Hinsdale Central earned their first win of the weekend by beating Lindbergh in the seventh-place game.

NILES WEST TOURNAMENT

Wolves Come Through In The Clutch To Defend Title
Niles West outlasted DeLaSalle 11-8 in their own tournament's title game to repeat as champions of their own tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Wolves were able to outlast the Meteors in the final game with a 4-0 fourth quarter run after the teams entered the last quarter tied at 6-6. Steven Renko led the team with 13 goals, while Andrew Mudreac and Max Romanelli combined to score 7 goals in the title game victory. Waubonsie Valley finished an undefeated weekend with a third-place game win over Stagg; Mike McWhirter scored 14 goals to lead the Warriors, who were kept from playing for the title after losing a tiebreaker to the hosts after the two squads tied earlier in the day. St Rita beat Metea Valley for fifth place, while Maine West grabbed their first win of the weekend by beating Von Steuben in the seventh place game.

NORTHSIDE TOURNAMENT

Northside Fights To Win Own Tournament
Christian Hernandez and Michal Rajski combined to score 16 goals as the host Mustangs earned wins over Lane, Mather, Taft, and Simeon to win their own event on Saturday afternoon. The key game was played between CPS rivals NSP and Lane, as Luis Granja's two key goals helped the hosts beat the Indians 7-6. Lane ended up in second with a 3-1 mark, Mather grabbed two wins to finish in third, and Taft squeaked past Simeon 15-13 to end up in fourth place.

SCHAUMBURG TOURNAMENT

Lafayette Completes Major Turnaround To Win Schaumburg Title
The visitors from Missouri lost their tournament opener to the host Saxons on Friday afternoon, then won three straight games to make the final game, where they defeated St Charles East to take home a fresh trophy. They were able to earn wins over Hinsdale South and Wheeling on Saturday, then were the clear beneficiaries of Wheeling's upset of the Saxons late in the day. The tiebreaker meant that Lafayette would get to play the Saints in the title game, who bounced back from a Friday night loss to Whitney Young to beat York 7-6 and win a tiebreaker to make the final game. Lafayette eventually beat STC East 6-4 on Saturday night before heading home victorious. York responded from their loss to beat Schaumburg 7-2 in the third-place game, Wheeling topped McHenry for fifth place, and Hinsdale South defeated Whitney Young in the seventh-place game.

STEVENSON TOURNAMENT

Oak Park, Stevenson Represent Illinois Dominance
Illinois water polo teams went 7-2 at the I-55 Showdown behind a pair of 3-0 performances from OPRF and Stevenson over the weekend. Mitchell Sokolsky scored 11 goals and Taylor Baretz added 10 scores to help the Patriots beat MICDS on Friday and both Ladue and Parkway West on Saturday. The Huskies did the same behind an 11-goal performance from Nathan Pimentel and a combined 12 goals from Alex Darnall and Mark Hallman. Libertyville also earned a win over MICDS on Friday, but lost an overtime heartbreaker to Ladue on Saturday morning and then fell at the hands of Parkway West in the afternoon.

LWE TOURNAMENT

Knights Earn Redemption In Winning LWE Tournament
Lincoln-Way Central earned a bit of redemption by beating Lincoln-Way North and the rest of the teams in the LWE Tournament over the weekend. The Knights lost to the Phoenix in the opening round of this same event last season, but Danijela Jackovich was present this time around, and her dominant, 6-goal effort helped ensure LWC would walk away with a trophy from this annual event. Jackovich totaled 19 goals in the three-game set, which also included wins over Lockport and R-B. She was complimented by Liz Klock and Kristi Howe, who combined to score 13 goals during the festivities. The hosts ended up winning the third-place game by beating R-B, Lockport rolled to a 12-5 win over Andrew in the fifth-place contest, and Lincoln-Way West earned their first win of the weekend by beating Richards for seventh place.

LYONS TOURNAMENT

Balanced Effort Helps Patriots Win Lyons Tournament
Stevenson received major contributions from a large cast of players as they dethroned the hosts to win the Lyons Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Brittany Gartenberg scored 10 goals and Becky Callen made 29 saves to lead the Patriots past Evanston, Neuqua Valley, and Lyons. Allison Treveto (8 goals), Melissa Gartenberg (6 goals), and Alex Kanaris (5 goals) also made significant offensive contributions, while Jenna Oliver played standout defense for a team that finished in third place in last year's event. The Lions held off Mundelein and cruised past Waubonsie Valley to finish in second with a 2-1 mark, while Mundelein got past Neuqua Valley 15-6 to claim third place. Evanston earned their first win by beating Waubonsie Valley in the fifth-place game.
