GAME PREVIEWS (Friday, March 21)

 

 

 

FEATURED EVENT

FENWICK TOURNAMENT

The second day of the Fenwick Tournament kicks off with a contest between the first two game winners from Thursday night. The rest of the evening features six games, including Top 10 battles between Lyons-Naperville Central and Brother Rice-Naperville North. The results will help set up Saturday's championship round.

 

KEEP AN EYE ON

MUNDELEIN TOURNAMENT

Mundelein's second annual tournament casts a wide variety of teams from across the Chicagoland-area in an eight-team, sixteen-game event that begins on Friday afternoon. The hosts belong to a group with New Trier, Hoffman, and Lindbergh; the second group consists of Fremd, Hinsdale Central, Libertyville, and Lockport. The event culminates with a championship round beginning at 2:30pm on Saturday.

 

EVANSTON TOURNAMENT

The Evanston Tournament gets underway on Friday night with five  teams playing five games to get the weekend started. The hosts battle GBS and St Viator, GBN faces GBS, and Bremen faces both GBS and St Viator on Friday night.

 

MAINE EAST TOURNAMENT

The Blue Demons' host a wide-variety of teams from across the state of Illinois in a two-day affair that will culminate in a championship round on Saturday afternoon. The hosts are also joined by Bradley, BG, Maine South, Metea Valley, Niles West, Northside, and Von Steuben.

 

SCHAUMBURG TOURNAMENT

The Saxons' annual tournament is a two-day, eight-team, sixteen-game event that features teams that range from Missouri (Lafayette) to Chicago (Whitney Young) and just about everywhere else in between (LWW, McHenry, St Rita, Wheeling, York).

 

VERNON HILLS TOURNAMENT

The Cougars host a four-team event that features Barrington, Highland Park, and Lake Forest. All six of the tournament games go down on Friday night, beginning at 4:00pm and concluding beyond 10:00pm.

FEATURED EVENT

NAPERVILLE CENTRAL TOURNAMENT

The Redhawks' tournament features an eclectic mix of six teams from around the state; the first two games of the event begin on Friday night, with the hosts taking on Homewood-Flossmoor and Mother McAuley doing battle with Waubonsie Valley. Fremd and STC East join the festivities on Saturday and the tournament concludes with a mid-afternoon championship round.

 

KEEP AN EYE ON

NAPERVILLE NORTH TOURNAMENT

The Huskies host their second straight tournament of the 2014 season, as they welcome Loyola, Neuqua Valley, and R-B for a mix of Varsity and JV games on Friday and Saturday. The hosts face nearby NVHS in the tournament opener, while the Ramblers and Bulldogs do battle on the first night's second contest. The teams play four more games on Saturday morning for a grand total of six games over the weekend.

 

BREMEN TOURNAMENT

The preliminary round of the Bremen Tournament gets underway on Friday night, as the hosts welcome Argo, Hinsdale South, Marian, Morton, Richards, Stagg  and a team to be named later for an eight-team event.

 

GBS TOURNAMENT

The four-team GBS Tournament kicks off on Friday night with two contests and continues on Saturday as the Titans, Hersey, Palatine, and York mix it up in a six-game round-robin event.

 

GULLIVER PREP TOURNAMENT

Top-ranked Fenwick heads down to Miami to play in the Gulliver Prep Tournament, where they will face some of the toughest competition from the southern part of the Sunshine state. In fact, the Friars first contest sees them square off with the hosts, who happen to be Florida's defending state champions, at 11:00am on Friday. Fenwick also plays Olympia on Friday and against Lake Brantley, Miami Beach, and Westminster on Saturday.

 

MAINE SOUTH TOURNAMENT

The Hawks have expanded their tournament to a six-team, championship-round format for 2014, as both Bradley and Libertyville are the new faces that will join Evanston, Highland Park, and Maine East in an event that kicks off on Friday night and concludes with a title game on Saturday afternoon. The hosts are in a group with Evanston and Libertyville, while the second group consists of Bradley, HP, and Maine East.

FENWICK TOURNAMENT

Fenwick 10 Oak Park 3

Danny Farmer scored 3 goals and Mike Hill blocked 6 shots as Fenwick defeated Oak Park 10-3. Bailey Wendt and Omar Calderon each added 2 goals, while Andrew Bertschy, David Durkin, and DJ Perez all chipped in with one score in the Friars' win. Mark Hallman recorded 2 goals and Lee Werner chipped in with one score in the Huskies' loss.

 

St Ignatius 7 Neuqua Valley 4

Billy Barth recorded 4 goals and Shane Hughes blocked 15 shots and contributed 4 assists as St Ignatius beat Neuqua Valley 7-4. Tom Dowling also netted 2 scores and John Reyes chipped in with one score in the Wolfpack's win. Simon Shatinsky led the Wildcats' offense with 2 goals on the night.

 

Naperville Central 10 St Patrick 6

Kyle Jackson recorded 5 goals and Christian May added 3 scores as Naperville Central earned a 10-6 win over St Patrick. Joe Bigenwald and Phillip Emden each scored once in the Redhawks' victory. Dan Walsh scored 3 goals, Connor O'Rourke put in 2 scores, and Eric Arroyo scored once in the loss for Pats.

 

Naperville North 16 Lincoln-Way East 6

Drake McClure registered 4 goals, Gianmarco Duin put in 3 scores, and nine other Huskies' scored once as Naperville North defeated LWE 16-6 on Friday night. Declan Flaherty and Nate Drewes both recorded 2 goals in the losing effort for the Griffins.

 

Stevenson 18 Neuqua Valley 8

Alex Kapecki and Mitchell Sokolsky scored 5 goals apiece and Andrew Shashin added 4 scores to help Stevenson claim an 18-8 victory over Neuqua Valley. Ian Ivkovich and Simon Shatinsky each tallied 3 scores in the loss for the Wildcats.

 

Naperville Central 11 Lyons 10

Phillip Emden recorded 4 goals and Kyle Jackson notched 3 scores to help the Redhawks fend off Lyons 11-10 on Friday evening. George Lundgren scored 5 goals, Nathan Kriha added 3 scores, and George Duffy netted 2 goals in the loss for the Lions.

 

Naperville North 11 Brother Rice 10

Luke Landiak connected on the game-winning goal with twenty seconds remaining after Nolan Roberts found him open after a steal to help Naperville North escape with an 11-10 victory over Brother Rice. Moments earlier, Ryan Towers scored the game-tying goal after taking a pass from Gianmarco Duin to help technically secure North's spot in the semifinals (a tie would have sent the Huskies to the semifinals by virtue of a tiebreaker). The Huskies overcame a late two-goal deficit to earn the win after relinquishing a 4-1 lead after the opening period. Roberts tallied 7 goals to lead the victors, while Drake McClure and Joe Tomashek also scored one goal apiece. Dan Whalen tallied 5 goals and Matt Bachler put in 4 scores in the loss for the Crusaders.

 

 

EVANSTON TOURNAMENT

Glenbrook South 14 Evanston 6

Jake Nelson scored 5 goals and Seamus Heneghan netted 3 scores as the Titans beat Evanston 14-6.

 

St Viator 8 Glenbrook North 1

Shea Boyer scored 3 goals and Frank Skorski blocked 9 shots in the Lions' 8-1 win over GBN. Keegan Finn and Tommy Madaras each added 2 scores and Eric Sutton scored once and drew 3 ejections in the victory.

 

St Viator 12 Evanston 4

Connor Loy, Keegan Finn, Eric Sutton, Shea Boyer, and Tommy Madaras each scored 2 times and Frank Skorski made 10 saves as St Viator beat Evanston 12-4.

 

Glenbrook South 14 Bremen 5

Brant Boczek, Peter Dales, and Tommy Haggerty each recorded 3 goals as GBS defeated Bremen 14-5.

 

 

MAINE EAST TOURNAMENT

Niles West 12 Maine South 2

Max Yusim scored 5 goals, Steven Renko added 3 scores, and Matt Lefler totaled 13 blocks and 6 steals as the Wolves defeated Maine South 12-2. Kyle Patt also dished out 5 assists in the win for West.

 

Maine East 15 Von Steuben 3

Mike Babula scored 5 times, James Caldwell registered 4 goals, and Mateo Kozomara netted 3 scores in the Blue Demons' 15-3 win over Von Steuben. Tyler Vonderheide also scored 2 goals and Julio Montiel chipped in with one score in the win.

 

Bradley 13 Metea Valley 8

Nick Dalzell tallied 6 scores and Carlos Leal put in 3 goals in Bradley's 13-8 victory over Metea Valley.

 

Niles West 17 Buffalo Grove 7

The Wolves improved to 2-0 on the night as Max Yusim scored 4 times and Steven Renko added 3 goals in Niles West's 17-7 victory over BG.

 

Maine East 10 Bradley 9

Mike Babula totaled 8 goals and 6 steals as the Blue Demons won their second game of their own event by edging Bradley 10-9. Nick Dalzell scored 7 times in the loss for the Boilers.

 

 

MUNDELEIN TOURNAMENT

New Trier 19 Hoffman 0

Alex Grant scored 7 goals, Jack Riggio recorded 2 scores, and goalie Graham Woolley delivered a shutout as the Trevians defeated Hoffman 19-0 in the tournament-opener for both teams.

 

 

SCHAUMBURG TOURNAMENT

Schaumburg 12 Lafayette 4

The Saxons exploded for five straight goals in the fourth quarter after entering the last period with a 7-4 lead to pull away from Missouri-based Lafayette 12-4 on Friday. Dan Skiroock totaled 4 goals and James Birriel netted 3 scores to lead the Saxons offense, while Robert Bach made 10 saves in the win. Michael Walsh and Tyler Gustafson each added 2 goals and Frank Kovar netted one score for the hosts. Rastko Stojsin scored 2 times and both Brent Huffines and Mitchell Wells put in one goal in the losing effort for the Lancers.

 

Lincoln-Way West 10 Wheeling 7

Kyle Karplunk scored 4 goals to help lead the Warriors to a 10-7 win over Wheeling. Nate Reiff registered 6 scores in the losing effort for the Wildcats.

 

York 12 McHenry 9

Joe Kesslering totaled 3 goals as the Dukes pulled away from the Warriors in the second half to claim a 12-9 win on Friday. Casey Callans and Logan Frendreis each tallied 2 scores as well for the victors. Matt Peck led McHenry with 5 goals in the losing effort.

 

St Rita 10 Whitney Young 7

Dan Sliazas recorded 3 goals to help St Rita fend off Whitney Young 10-7 in the final game of the night at the Schaumburg Tournament. Duncan McDonald led the Dolphins with 2 goals in the loss.

 

OTHER KEY GAMES

Stagg 12 Hinsdale South 10

Alex Kunz registered 4 goals and Gabe Jezierski notched 3 scores in the Chargers' 12-10 victory over Hinsdale South.

 

Taft 26 Steinmetz 20

Ricky Navarro scored 5 goals to lead Taft past Steinmetz 26-20 on Friday in a CPS contest.

Naperville Central 13 Homewood-Flossmoor 2

Michelle Spaits totaled 4 goals and the trio of Beth Ryan, Kaela Codo, and Jessica Fox each recorded 2 scores to help Central get past the Vikings 13-2 on Friday. Emily Westlove, Jennifer Oliver, and Krista Drapalik each added one score while Ryan and Kristina Altuve combined to make 9 steals. Amber Barney and Megan Dunlavy each tallied one goal, Kelly Morrissey and Sarah Tozer each made 2 steals, and Rebecca Tanner saved 7 shots in the loss for H-F.

 

Mother McAuley 13 Waubonsie Valley 3

Clare Bryar tallied 3 scores and four other players (Claire Mueller, Fran Williamson, Julie Olivares, Tess Bowens) added 2 goals as the Mighty Macs downed Waubonsie Valley 13-3. Mary June O'Connell and Maggie Hennigan each added one goal in the winning effort for McAuley. Samantha Holzschu scored 2 times and Sarah Anderson notched one score in the loss for the Warriors.

 

 

 

NAPERVILLE NORTH TOURNAMENT

Naperville North 9 Neuqua Valley 3

Caitlin Holzer, Dani DiMatteo, Jilian Eiken, and Katie Horn each scored 2 times and Taylor Stoner added a goal as the Huskies kicked off their own event with a 9-3 victory over Neuqua Valley. Kaitlyn Gorski put in 2 goals, Morgan Miller notched one score, and Issi French denied 13 shots in the loss for the Wildcats.

 

Loyola 17 R-B 3

Julia Sajnaj and Marta Considine each scored 4 goals to lead the Ramblers past the Bulldogs 17-3. Alana Dean and Megan Murtagh each tallied 2 scores and Colleen Ahern totaled 5 saves and 5 steals to help the Loyola cause. Destiny O'Day, Marisa Sosa, and Megan Calby each put in one score in the loss for R-B.

 

 

GBS TOURNEY

Palatine 20 Glenbrook South 4

Caroline Wojtas totaled 9 scores and Rachel Chumbook contributed 4 goals and 5 assists to lead Palatine to a 20-4 win over GBS on Friday. Caitlin McHugh and Lauren Rasor each added 2 scores and Kim Butler blocked 12 shots in the Pirates' victory. Diana Capota netted 2 scores in the loss for the Titans.

 

 

GULLIVER PREP TOURNAMENT

Top-ranked Fenwick dropped their tournament-opener to the hosts/defending state champions of Florida by a 14-5 score on Friday afternoon. They bounced back by knocking off Olympia 9-5 as they head into the second day of competition with a 1-1 record.

 

OTHER KEY GAMES

Prospect 19 Deerfield 1

Niki Neumann recorded 5 goals and Mary Schiavone totaled 4 scores as Prospect got past Deerfield 19-1.
