TOURNAMENT RECAP (March 14-16)

 

Fenwick Tops Lyons To Win Own Tournament
The second-ranked Friars won the latest battle with top-ranked Lyons on Saturday; the Friars pulled out to a 6-2 lead before a late rally from the defending state champions nearly tied the game in the final stages. Six different players scored goals for the tournament winners, who also earned wins over Curie, H-F, and OPRF at the event. Lyons finished the weekend with a 3-1 mark after wins over LWE, Naperville North, and Naperville Central. The third-ranked Huskies also edged Brother Rice, LWE, and Naperville Central to claim an impressive third-place finish. Naperville North's Eric Curia was the event's leading scorer, while Peter Dore led LT with 12 goals and Matt Bresnahan and Matt Farmer combined to score 19 times for the tournament winners.

 

Thursday's Game Recaps

Oak Park 9 Curie 7

Nathan Pimentel scored 3 goals and Chris Brandt and Mark Hallman both scored 2 goals as Oak Park held off Curie 9-7 in the Fenwick Tournament opener on Thursday afternoon. Alex Darnall and Lee Warner each added a goal in the Huskies' win. Marcos Hernandez totaled 4 goals and Jeronimo Chavez tallied 3 scores in the loss for the Condors.

 

Brother Rice 9 St Patrick 6

Kevin Mayer recorded 4 goals and both Dave Jackson and Ian Disteldorf notched 2 scores to lift Brother Rice past St Patrick 6-5 on Thursday. Joseph Gibson put in 2 scores in the losing effort for the Shamrocks.

 

Lyons 13 Lincoln-Way East 3

Peter Dore scored 5 goals and Josh Hirt tallied 4 scores as Lyons ran away with a 13-3 win over LWE on Thursday. Adam Klein also scored 2 second-half goals for the Lions in the victory.

 

H-F 8 Curie 5

Kevin Kuchta recorded 4 goals and Edgar Wright added 2 scores to lead Homewood-Flossmoor to an 8-5 victory over Curie on Thursday. Jakobi McClellen also stopped 10 shots in the winning effort. Jeronimo Chavez scored 4 goals of his own in the loss for the Condors.

 

Stevenson 8 St Ignatius 6

Mitchell Sokolsky scored 3 goals and Remy Dalloul put in 2 goals in the Patriots' 8-6 win over St Ignatius. Tom Dowling led the Wolfpack with 4 goals in the loss.

 

Fenwick 15 H-F 5

Matt Bresnahan scored 4 times to lead Fenwick to a 15-5 victory over H-F to end the first night of their own tournament. Andrew Bertschy, Danny Farmer, Matt Farmer, and Trevor McLean each added 2 goals in the win for the Friars. Tommy McGuire also stopped 10 shots in the victory for the hosts. H-F goalie Jakobi McClellan made 13 saves in the loss for the Vikings.


Friday's Game Recaps

Fenwick 10 Oak Park 2

Danny and Matt Farmer each scored 3 goals as the Friars jumped out to a 10-0 lead before giving up two late goals in a 10-2 victory over Oak Park. Matt Bresnahan added 2 scores and both Omar Calderon and Trevor McLean chipped in with a goal in the Fenwick victory. Henry Carpenter and Nathan Pimentel each scored once in the loss for the Huskies.

 

Lyons 6 Naperville North 5

Joe Shannon scored 4 goals, including the eventual game-winner, as Lyons remained perfect in 2013 with a 6-5 victory over Naperville North. Nathan Kriha and Peter Dore each added one goal apiece for LT in the win. Gianmarco Duin led the Huskies with 2 scores, while Eric Curia, Garrett Nash, and Nolan Roberts all scored once in the loss.

 

Neuqua Valley 10 St Patrick 4

Will Russell recorded 5 goals and Alex Thoele scored 2 times as the Wildcats earned a 10-4 win over St Patrick. Brian DePuy, Lucas Becker, and Simon Shatinsky each scored once in the Neuqua win. Connor O'Rourke led the Shamrocks with 2 scores, while Joseph Gibson and Patrick Sisk each scored once in the losing effort.

 

Naperville Central 8 Stevenson 5

Christian May and Nick Walker each scored 3 times as the Redhawks used a 4-0 fourth quarter blitz to overtake the Patriots and claim an 8-5 win. Central trailed 5-4 entering the final period, but held their counterparts scoreless while putting together their impressive run. Adam Hunter and Joe Bigenwald each added a goal in the win for the Redhawks. Remy Dalloul and Varun Mummadi both scored 2 goals and Mitchell Sokolsky netted one score in the loss for Stevenson.

 

Naperville North 9 Lincoln-Way East 7

Eric Curia scored 3 of his game-high 6 goals in the final period to help Naperville North come-from-behind to a feisty Lincoln-Way East team 9-7 on Friday night. Gianmarco Duin scored 2 times and Nolan Roberts chipped in with a goal in the Huskies' win. Sean Romberg led the Griffins with 2 goals in the loss.

 

Brother Rice 8 Neuqua Valley 7

Dan Whalen, Dave Jackson, and Kevin Mayer each registered 2 goals as Brother Rice eked out an 8-7 victory over Neuqua Valley. Will Russell scored 3 goals in the loss for the Wildcats.

 

Naperville Central 10 St Ignatius 7

Adam Hunter, Christian May, and Nick Walker each tallied 2 scores as the Redhawks held off St Ignatius to earn a 10-7 win in the late game on Friday night. Tom Dowling recorded 3 goals and Shane Hughes notched 2 scores in the losing effort for the Wolfpack.

Fenwick 18 Curie 7

Matt Bresnahan, Matt Farmer, and Omar Calderon each scored 3 goals as Fenwick beat Curie 18-7 to get to the title game of their own event on Saturday.

 

Oak Park 9 H-F 3

Nathan Pimentel recorded 3 goals to help the Huskies pull away from H-F to grab a 9-3 victory. Kevin Kuchta scored 3 times and Jakobi McClellan made 10 saves in the loss for the Vikings.

Lincoln-Way East 5 St Patrick 2

Sean Romberg registered 2 goals to help lift the Griffins past St Patrick 5-2.

 

St Ignatius 6 Curie 4

Billy Barth and Shane Hughes each scored 2 goals to lead the Wolfpack past Curie 6-4. Marcos Hernandez led the Condors with 2 goals.

 

Neuqua Valley 8 Stevenson 3

Brian DePuy and Will Russell both scored 2 times in the Wildcats' 8-3 triumph over Stevenson. Mitchell Sokolsky scored 3 goals in the loss for the Patriots.

 

Naperville North 10 Brother Rice 8

Eric Curia put in a dominating performance with 9 goals as Naperville North fended off a challenge from Brother Rice to earn a 10-8 win. Nolan Roberts added the other goal for the Huskies. Kevin Mayer put in 4 goals and Dan Whalen added 2 scores in the loss for the Crusaders.

 

Lyons 11 Naperville Central 2

Peter Dore recorded 5 goals and Nathan Kriha added 3 scores as Lyons beat Naperville Central 11-2 to advance to the Fenwick Tournament's title game on Saturday.

 

St Ignatius 9 Lincoln-Way East 7

Juan Reyes scored the game-winning goal in the fourth quarter to help the Wolfpack earn a 9-7 comeback win over LWE. Billy Barth scored 4 times and Tom Dowling also scored 2 times in the SICP win.

 

H-F 7 St Patrick 3

Kevin Kuchta totaled 4 goals and 7 steals and Jakobi McClellan stopped 8 shots as the Vikings closed out their weekend with a 7-3 win over St Patrick. Edgar Wright also contributed in a big way with 4 assists in the winning effort. Joseph Gibson led the Shamrocks with 2 goals.

 

Oak Park 9 Neuqua Valley 4

Mark Hallman registered 5 goals and Alex West tallied 2 scores in the Huskies' 9-4 win over the Wildcats. Sean Obrecht also made 8 saves for OPRF.

 

Stevenson 6 Brother Rice 6

Mitchell Sokolsky scored 4 goals and Josh Weisberg added 2 scores as Stevenson earned a forfeit victory over Brother Rice after the teams ended play tied at 6-6 in the third quarter. Dave Jackson tallied 3 goals and Kevin Mayer scored 2 times for the Crusaders.

 

Fenwick 6 Lyons 5 (1st place)

The Friars pulled out to a 6-2 lead and held off a late rally from the defending state champs to beat Lyons 6-5 on Saturday, winning their own tournament in the process. Six different players scored for the hosts, as Matt Bresnahan, Matt Farmer, and Omar Calderon tallied goals in the first half and Andrew Bertschy, Justin White, and Trevor McLean added second-half goals in the victory. Joe Shannon scored 2 times in the first half, while Sean McMahon scored 2 second-half goals and Peter Dore scored in the final minute to get LT within one, but they couldn't convert on their final attempt and lost for the first time in 2013.

 

Naperville North 11 Naperville Central 5 (3rd place)

Eric Curia scored 3 times and Garrett Nash, Luke Landiak, and Nolan Roberts each added 2 scores as the Huskies ended the tournament with an 11-5 victory over rival Naperville Central.
