GAME PREVIEWS (Thursday, March 14)

 

 

 

MATCH OF THE DAY

FENWICK TOURNAMENT

The Friars' annual tournament begins with six preliminary round games on Thursday evening. Curie and Oak Park get things started at 4:30pm, followed by a Catholic League showdown between Brother Rice and St Patrick. Top-ranked Lyons battles Lincoln-Way East, Curie takes on H-F, St Ignatius matches up with Stevenson, and the hosts begin their tournament campaign with a contest against H-F.

5:30pm - #16 Fremd at #21 Conant

Another huge Mid-Suburban League West contest takes place in Hoffman Estates on Thursday night when Fremd travels to Conant to battle for supremacy of the Northwest Suburbs.

If this contest mirrors last weekend's fixture between the two teams at the Hinsdale Central Tournament (North won 3-2), expect a tight defensive battle between the Phoenix and Griffins.

FENWICK TOURNAMENT

Oak Park 9 Curie 7

Nathan Pimentel scored 3 goals and Chris Brandt and Mark Hallman both scored 2 goals as Oak Park held off Curie 9-7 in the Fenwick Tournament opener on Thursday afternoon. Alex Darnall and Lee Warner each added a goal in the Huskies' win. Marcos Hernandez totaled 4 goals and Jeronimo Chavez tallied 3 scores in the loss for the Condors.

 

Brother Rice 9 St Patrick 6

Kevin Mayer recorded 4 goals and both Dave Jackson and Ian Disteldorf notched 2 scores to lift Brother Rice past St Patrick 6-5 on Thursday. Joseph Gibson put in 2 scores in the losing effort for the Shamrocks.

 

Lyons 13 Lincoln-Way East 3

Peter Dore scored 5 goals and Josh Hirt tallied 4 scores as Lyons ran away with a 13-3 win over LWE on Thursday. Adam Klein also scored 2 second-half goals for the Lions in the victory.

 

H-F 8 Curie 5

Kevin Kuchta recorded 4 goals and Edgar Wright added 2 scores to lead Homewood-Flossmoor to an 8-5 victory over Curie on Thursday. Jeronimo Chavez scored 4 goals of his own in the loss for the Condors.

 

Stevenson 8 St Ignatius 6

Mitchell Sokolsky scored 3 goals and Remy Dalloul put in 2 goals in the Patriots' 8-6 win over St Ignatius. Tom Dowling led the Wolfpack with 4 goals in the loss.

 

Fenwick 15 H-F 5

Matt Bresnahan scored 4 times to lead Fenwick to a 15-5 victory over H-F to end the first night of their own tournament. Andrew Bertschy, Danny Farmer, Matt Farmer, and Trevor McLean each added 2 goals in the win for the Friars. Tommy McGuire also stopped 10 shots in the victory for the hosts.

Fenwick 11 DeLaSalle 4

Matt Bresnahan totaled 5 scores and Matt Farmer chipped in with 3 scores in the Friars' 11-4 conference victory over DeLaSalle.

 

Fremd 8 Conant 7

Matt Emerson scored 4 times and JP French registered 3 goals as Fremd edged Conant 8-7. Jake Nelson, Connor Schmitz, and John Burke each scored 2 times and goalie Aly Ahmed totaled 11 saves and 7 steals in the loss for the Cougars.

 

Glenbrook South 11 Maine East 6

Bob Meyer scored 4 goals, Cole Hamilton notched 2 scores, and Matt Cubelic made 7 saves in the Titans' 11-6 conference win over Maine East. Mike Babula led the Blue Demons with 3 goals.

 

Hersey 9 Elk Grove 8 (OT)

George Vladimirov scored 4 goals in Hersey's 9-8 overtime win over Elk Grove in an MSL East fixture. Kyle Phillips scored 7 goals in the loss for the Grenadiers.

 

Lockport 12 STC North 5

Dan Oldendorf totaled 5 goals, Jake Elias put in 4 scores, and John Goetz stopped 11 shots in the Porters' 12-5 win over STC North. Ross Davis tallied 3 scores in the loss for the North Stars.

 

Maine South 12 Glenbrook North 6

Makai-Deneve Arnam and Matt Kramer each tallied 4 scores to lead Maine South to a 12-6 win over GBN on Thursday. John Roberts poured in 4 goals for the Spartans in the losing effort.

 

Neuqua Valley 15 Waubonsie Valley 13

Will Russell totaled 6 goals, Alex Thoele scored 4 times, and Simon Shatinsky put in 3 goals as Neuqua Valley beat Waubonsie Valley 15-13 on Thursday. John Hedderman also made 12 saves in the Wildcats' victory. Mike McWhirter scored 5 goals and Brandon Krug tallied 4 scores for the Warriors.

 

New Trier 18 Highland Park 2

Jason Bartha and Rudy Chui each scored 2 goals to help the Trevians down Highland Park 18-2. Isaac Shapiro scored both goals in the loss for the Giants.

 

Niles West 20 Deerfield 8

Stefan Lazarevski recorded 6 goals in the Wolves' 20-8 victory over Deerfield in a CSL fixture.

 

Palatine 15 Schaumburg 6

Wally Kleinfeldt scored 4 goals and both Alex Brons and Christian Kalfas totaled 3 scores as the Pirates knocked off Schaumburg 15-6. Kristian Kalev totaled 2 goals and 5 steals, Omar El Hoffi put in 2 goals, and Peter Blackham made 10 saves for the victors. James Birriel and LJ Peterson each scored 2 times in the loss for the Saxons.

 

Prospect 12 Buffalo Grove 4

Liam Hansen registered 5 goals, Cam Mauer put in 4 scores, and Michael Morikado chipped in with 3 goals in the Knights' 12-4 victory over Buffalo Grove in MSL East play on Thursday.

 

Sandburg 19 Hinsdale South 9

Kevin Tunney, Mike O'Malley, Tomas Serrano, and Zach Roper each scored 4 goals as the Eagles downed Hinsdale South 19-9 on Thursday.

 

Whitney Young 19 Argo 10

Seth Hughes scored 12 goals and Juan Reyes added 4 scores as the Dolphins defeated Argo 19-10. Matt Gonzales made 12 saves in the winning effort for Whitney Young.

Brittany Gartenberg, Jenna Oliver, Laura Larsen, and Melissa Gartenberg each scored 2 goals and Becky Callen made 11 saves and allowed just one goal through the first three periods as Stevenson beat Oak Park 11-3 on Thursday. Allison Traveto and Autumn Hoang each added one score apiece in the win for the host Patriots. Claire Rolfes, Elizabeth Williams, and Samantha Robbins each scored one goal in the loss for the Huskies.

Catherine Byron tallied 3 scores and five others scored 2 times (Grace Buenrostro, Kayla Widdowson, Maddy Burrell, Reagan Dassatti, Sam Gavars) in Barrington's 18-5 win over Hoffman. Tori Johnson recorded 3 goals in the loss for the Hawks.

 

Evanston 13 Maine West 7

Karissa McBride and Yasi Nassiri each scored 5 goals as the Wildkits picked up a key 13-7 conference win over Maine West. Carly Romano led the Warriors with 4 scores and goaltender Tara Woodford blocked 12 shots in the loss.

 

Fremd 12 Conant 9

Emma Hoffman recorded 4 goals, Samantha Barry netted 3 goals, and both Mandy Borre and Tori Boldt scored 2 times as Fremd defeated Conant 12-9. Carmen Rosas scored 4 goals and Angie Skittone added 3 scores in the loss for the Cougars.

 

Lincoln-Way Central 20 Richards 1

Danijela Jackovich and Liz Klock each scored 5 goals and Jackovich totaled 15 steals in the Knights' 20-1 victory over Richards.

 

Lincoln-Way North 9 Lincoln-Way East 3

Cheyenne DeGraff registered 5 goals and the Phoenix beat Lincoln-Way East 9-3, their second win over the Griffins in six days.

 

Neuqua Valley 12 Waubonsie Valley 3

Ann Kathrin Becker, Brooke Bedford, and Morgan Miller each scored 3 goals to help lead the Wildcats to a 12-3 triumph over Waubonsie Valley. Kaitlyn Gorski also scored 2 times and Lauren Harder added a goal in the win for Neuqua.

 

New Trier 20 Highland Park 1

Kaleigh Dolan scored 5 times and Brittany Bishop and Jacqueline Glattard each put in 4 scores as New Trier beat Highland Park 20-1.

 

Palatine 12 Schaumburg 3

Rachel Chumbook totaled 7 goals and 6 steals to lead Palatine to a 12-3 win over Schaumburg. Caroline Wojtas, Caitlin McHugh, Emily Seidl, Johy Topp, and Lauren Rasor also chipped in with one goal apiece in the Pirates' first MSL West division win of 2013. Kim Butler also made 10 saves for the victors. Ashley Johnson, Claire Lynch, and Krystal Vezzetti each scored one goal and Katrina Vargo blocked 8 shots in the loss for the Saxons.

 

STC North 12 Lockport 6

Sarah Stern netted 5 goals, Nicole Guyett scored 3 times, and Maddie Jones tallied 2 goals as the North Stars defeated Lockport 12-6. Hannah Horsfall also made 12 saves in the win for North.

 

Wheeling 14 Meadows 3

Kat Dobrowski poured in 7 goals and Rachel Ropski and Theresa Godlewski combined to score 7 goals in Wheeling's 14-3 victory over Meadows. Keara Myatt stopped 10 shots on the defensive end in the win.
