The two Catholic League rivals waste no time mixing things up in an opening-night rematch of last year's state semifinal contest, which Fenwick won 12-8 en route to a state title.

 

KEEP AN EYE ON

6:00pm #28 Maine East at #13 Conant

The Blue Demons and Cougars are both coming off stellar, division-winning seasons and will hope to begin the 2015 campaign with a big nonconference victory. Maine East won last year's season-opener between the two teams 11-8.

MATCH OF THE DAY

Fenwick 18 Brother Rice 6

Danny Farmer recorded 6 goals and Bailey Wendt netted 3 scores as Fenwick outscored Brother Rice 8-1 in the third quarter to break the game open en route to an 18-6 victory over the Crusaders. DJ Perez, Jack Mahoney, and Ryan Masi each added 2 scores while Will Skowron blocked 6 shots for the hosts. Chez Daggs, Colin Daly, and Noah Groll all put in one goal to round out the scoring for Fenwick.

 

OTHER KEY GAMES

DeLaSalle 8 St Viator 6 (OT)

The Meteors outlasted the Lions 8-6 in overtime in the Catholic League opener for both teams on Monday. Roberto Rodriguez scored 3 goals and Omar Gomez scored the game-tying goal to send the game to overtime near the end of the fourth period. Alex Resendez totaled 2 goals and Frank Skorski stopped 9 shots in the loss for the hosts. Keegan Finn, Shea Boyer, and Zach Benson each added one goal for Viator.

 

Jones-Payton 20 Lincoln Park 3

Jared Williams recorded 5 goals, including four in the opening quarter, to help lead the Eagles to a 20-3 victory over Lincoln Park.

 

Maine South 12 STC East 11 (OT)

The Hawks scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period to emerge with a tough 12-11 road win over STC East on Monday night in nonconference action. The teams finished the first half tied at 5-5 and ended regulation tied at 10-10 before trading goals in the first extra session. Stats for the victors coming soon. Andrew Roberge scored 4 times, Dustin Differding netted 3 goals, and both Ethan Braham and Jack Sweeney chipped in with 2 goals in the loss for the Saints.

 

Morgan Park 25 Solario 9

Christian Cooper totaled 11 goals and also stopped 11 shots in two periods of goaltending duties to help lift Morgan Park over Solario 25-9. Marcellus Freeman also contributed 6 goals in the winning effort.

Fenwick 8 Mother McAuley 4

Catie Wallace recorded 4 goals to help lead the Friars past the Mighty Macs 8-4 on opening night. The defending state champions built a 5-1 halftime lead and were able to hold off their rivals in the second half to secure the Catholic League win. Eryn Kulik, Kelly Frumkin, Molly McGuire, and Shannon Forst each added one goal for the hosts.

 

OTHER KEY GAMES

Conant 16 Maine East 5

Carmen Rosas notched 7 scores, Emily Weingart added 4 goals, and Maddy Demaret blocked 8 shots as the Cougars defeated Maine East 16-5 on Monday night. Paulina Chowaniec also scored 2 goals while Weingart and Barbra Smigla each totaled 4 steals to lead the defensive effort. Claire Rosas, Miranda Fenlon, Nicole Mihaylova, and Shannon Maloney rounded out the Cougars' offensive attack with one goal each. Sarah Pham led the Blue Demons with 2 scores, while Hannah Farley, Manka Arifi, and Zainab Naseer each added one goal in the loss.

 

Jones-Payton 20 Lincoln Park 7

Rebecca Sudworth poured in 10 goals, Mara Hoplamazian tallied 4 scores, and Meredith Lohman netted 3 goals as the Lady Eagles defeated Lincoln Park 20-7. Haley Gibbs also recorded 2 goals and Nicole Culver put in one score in the winning effort.

 

Solario 18 Morgan Park 14

Xochilt Zamorano racked up 13 goals to lead Solario to an 18-14 victory over Morgan Park on Monday. Sameiya Bogan tallied 8 scores in the loss for the Lady Mustangs.

 

STC North 11 Schaumburg 4

Katie Quinn totaled 4 goals while both Brittany Veto and Katie Difiglio scored 3 times as the North Stars kicked off their season with an 11-4 victory over Schaumburg. Katie Steele and Monica Guyett led a solid defense performance, each recording 7 steals, while Claire Rich blocked 7 shots in the win.
