TOURNAMENT RECAP (March 8-9)
New Trier Claims Palatine Tournament Crown
The fourth-ranked Trevians started off their 2013 season in fine fashion
by winning the Palatine Tourney with a perfect 4-0 mark during the two-day
event. The Jordan Palmer-led squad beat Latin and Mundelein on Friday night to
advance to the championship bracket, where they defeated Loyola and Palatine to
grab the early-season trophy. Meanwhile, the host Pirates put forth a strong
effort before losing in the title game, finishing with wins over McHenry and St
Ignatius and earning a draw with Loyola. The Ramblers also looked solid with a revamped
starting lineup, beating Curie and H-F before drawing with the hosts to finish
in second place via tiebreaker. Curie emerged with a 3-1 record to claim fourth
place, while H-F bounced back from two losses on Friday with two wins on
Saturday to grab seventh place.
Friday's Preliminary Round Recaps
Palatine 13 St Ignatius 3
The host Pirates earned a big 13-3 win over St Ignatius to start their own
tournament on a high note. Kristian Kalev led the way with 4 goals, Omar El
Hoffi scored 3 times, and both Christian Kalfas and Wally Kleinfeldt tallied
2 scores in the win. Peter Blackham also stopped 7 shots for the Pirates.
Meanwhile, Billy Barth recorded all 3 goals in the loss for the shorthanded
Wolfpack.
Loyola 7 H-F 6
Ben Pasquesi and Jack Considine each scored 2 goals to help the Ramblers
edge the Vikings 7-6. Mason Reidel and Mike Mitchell both scored 2 goals in
the loss for H-F, who trailed 6-3 entering the final period but came up
one-goal short of breaking even with Loyola.
New Trier 14 Mundelein 9
Jordan Palmer scored 7 times and both Jason Bartha and John Schulz
contributed 3 scores as New Trier kicked off their 2013 campaign with a 14-9
win over Mundelein. Joey Ryan also scored once in the win for the Trevians.
Connor Black and Jason Rehor each put in 4 goals in the loss for the
Mustangs, who kept things close the entire way after trailing 5-3 at
halftime. Art Kasemets also drew 4 ejections and goalie Matt Angelback
stopped 12 shots in the loss for Mundelein.
St Ignatius 18 McHenry 9
John Reyes totaled 6 goals and both Billy Barth and Shane Hughes added 4
scores as the Wolfpack beat McHenry 18-9. Tom Dowling also scored 2 times in
the SICP win. Matt Peck led the Warriors with 5 goals.
Curie 7 H-F 6
Jeronimo Chavez scored 3 goals and both Ivan Ariza and Marcos Hernandez
added 2 scores to help lift the Condors past the Vikings 7-6. Kevin Kuchta
and Mike Mitchell both registered 2 goals in the losing effort for H-F, who
lost their second game of the night by just one goal.
New Trier 14 Latin 3
Dano Johnson recorded 4 goals
and both Jordan Palmer and John Schulz added 3 scores as the Trevians beat
Latin 14-3 to close out the Palatine Tournament on Friday night with their
second victory. Jacob Hirshman scored 2 goals and Steven Grotewold notched
one score in the loss for the Romans.
Saturday's Preliminary Round Recaps
Palatine 14 McHenry 5
Christian Kalfas and Wally Kleinfeldt each tallied 3 scores and Peter
Blackham blocked 8 shots as the Pirates beat McHenry 14-5. Alex Brons,
Kristian Kalev, and Omar El Hoffi each added 2 goals in the win for the
hosts. Andrew Trocki scored 2 goals in the loss for the Warriors.
Loyola 9 Curie 7
Jack Considine scored 3 goals and Cameron Shewchuck, Matt Kearney, and Ray Lynch
each scored 2 times as Loyola built a 5-2 halftime lead and held on late
to beat Curie 9-7. Ivan Ariza netted 3 goals and Daniel Pantoja added 2
scores in the loss for the Condors.
Mundelein 11 Latin 5
Art Kasemets and Mark Begrowicz each scored 3 goals to help the Mustangs
beat Latin 11-5 for their first win of the season. Connor Black and Jude
Kruass each tacked on 2 scores in the victory for Mundelein. Steven
Grotewold and Winslow Ziv both scored twice in the loss for the Romans.
Saturday's Championship Round Recaps
Loyola 8 Palatine 8
Kristian Kalev's game-tying goal in the final minute ended the first game
of the championship bracket in an 8-8 tie between Loyola and Palatine.
Kalev scored 3 times and Christian Kalfas notched 2 scores for the hosts,
while Cameron Shewchuck and Jack Considine each netted 3 goals for the Ramblers.
Curie 15 St Ignatius 9
Ivan Ariza and Jeronimo Chavez both recorded 4 goals and Marcos Hernandez
added 3 scores as Curie defeated St Ignatius 15-9. Billy Barth and James
Haney each tallied 3 scores while Shane Hughes added 2 scores in the
losing effort for the Wolfpack.
H-F 16 McHenry 3
Hayden Santefort and Kevin Kuchta both scored 4 goals and Edgar Wright
chipped in with 3 scores as the Vikings earned their first win of the
event by beating McHenry 16-3. Andrew Trocki put in 2 goals in the loss
for the Warriors.
New Trier 8 Loyola 4
Jordan Palmer registered 3 goals and Joey Ryan added 2 scores as New Trier
upended Loyola 8-4 to get within one win of the tournament title. Ben
Pasquesi, Cameron Shewchuck, Jack Considine, and Ray Lynch each scored once in the loss for
the Ramblers.
Curie 8 Mundelein 7
Ivan Ariza and Jeronimo Chavez both scored 3 goals and Curie made a stop
on Mundelein's last-ditch effort to hold on to an 8-7 victory on Saturday
afternoon. Marcos Hernandez added 2 scores in the win for the Condors.
Connor Black tallied 4 scores in the loss for the Mustangs.
H-F 13 Latin 3
Kevin Kuchta recorded 5 goals to help lift H-F past Latin 13-3 on
Saturday. Broc Thompson also scored 3 times in the Vikings' win, which
sealed a seventh-place finish and a 2-2 record for thee weekend.
New Trier 18 Palatine 5
Jordan Palmer poured in 6 goals and John Schulz added 3 scores as New
Trier topped the hosts 18-3 to win the Palatine Tournament with a 4-0
record. Christian Kalfas, Kristian Kalev, and Omar El Hoffi were among a
group of five players that tallied one score in the loss for Palatine.
Mundelein 12 St Ignatius 12
Billy Barth gave St Ignatius a 12-11 lead with just over one-minute
remaining in regulation, but Connor Black scored on Mundelein's next
possession and the two teams finished in a 12-12 draw on Saturday. Barth
scored 4 times, Jesus Juarez and Shane Hughes each scored 3 goals, and Tom
Dowling netted 2 goals for the Wolfpack. Black scored 6 goals and Jason
Rehor notched 5 scores for the Mustangs, who claimed fifth place over SICP
by virtue of a tiebreaker.
Latin 9 McHenry 5
Steven Grotewold scored 3 goals as Latin beat McHenry 9-5 for their first
win of the tournament. Matt Peck tallied 2 goals in the loss for the
Warriors.
