TOURNAMENT RECAP (March 9)
Defense Helps With the Rise of the Phoenix
Lincoln-Way North allowed just two goals in three straight games to walk away
from Hinsdale with a 3-0 record and a tournament title on Saturday. After
beating Glenbrook South 11-2 in their first game, the Phoenix beat both
Lincoln-Way East and STC North by 3-2 margins to win the event. Sam Klosak
tallied 9 goals to lead the offense, while goalie Katie Pender and the defense
allowed just 6 total goals in three games. Sarah Stern scored 5 goals to help
the North Stars place second with a 2-1 mark, while Sarah Pircon led all scorers
with 15 goals to help the hosts claim third place. Taryn Linke scored 4 goals
and Haley McCabe added 3 scores as LWE finished in fourth, Anne Edwards totaled
9 goals in GBS' fifth-place finish, and Kasia Serwin scored 12 times even though
Hoffman finished with an 0-3 record.

Hinsdale Central 11 Hoffman 6
Sarah Pircon registered 7 goals to lead the Red Devils past the Hawks 11-6
in the tournament-opening game. Kasia Serwin tallied 5 scores in the loss
for Hoffman.
Lincoln-Way East 8 Glenbrook South 7
Taryn Linke scored 3 goals and led a balanced offensive attack that held
off a late rally from GBS to win the second game of the event by an 8-7
margin. Anne Edwards scored 2 times in the loss for the Titans.
STC North 9 Hoffman 2
Nicole Guyett and Sarah Stern both netted 2 goals in the North Stars' 9-2
victory over Hoffman. Jessica Sullivan and Kasia Serwin each scored once in
the loss for the Hawks.
Lincoln-Way North 11 Glenbrook South 2
Sam Klosak poured in 6 goals and both Carlie Petraitis and Cassidy DeGraff
tacked on 2 goals apiece in North's 11-2 win over GBS. Anne Edwards
tallied both goals for the Titans in the losing effort.
STC North 8 Hinsdale Central 7
Sarah Stern totaled 3 goals and 3 assists to lead the North Stars past
Hinsdale Central 8-7 on Saturday. Kelsey Theile also contributed 5 steals on
the defensive end and Hannah Horsfall blocked 11 shots in the win for North.
Sarah Pircon scored 4 times in the losing effort for the hosts.
Lincoln-Way North 3 Lincoln-Way East 2
Sam Klosak scored 2 goals and goalie Kelly Pender and the Phoenix defense
held LWE to just two goals in a 3-2 victory that helped them advance to
the tournament final. Haley McCabe and Taryn Linke each put in one goal in
the loss for the Griffins.
Glenbrook South 16 Hoffman 8 (5th place)
Anne Edwards and Jessie Kerndt both registered 5 goals and Maggie Dietrich
tallied 3 scores to help the Titans beat Hoffman 16-8 in the fifth-place
game. Kasia Serwin scored 6 times in the loss for the Hawks.
Hinsdale Central 6 Lincoln-Way East 3 (3rd place)
Sarah Pircon scored 4 times and Liza Gross added 2 scores as the Red
Devils beat the Griffins 6-3 in the event's third-place game. Stephanie
Bitz recorded 2 goals and Haley McCabe added one score in the loss for
East.
Lincoln-Way North 3 STC North 2 (1st place)
The Phoenix built up a 3-0 lead entering the final period and held on for
a 3-2 victory over STC North to claim the Hinsdale Central Tournament
title on Saturday. Cheyenne DeGraff, Keriann Clarin, and Sam Klosak each
scored once in the win for North. Nicole Guyett and Tori Garcia each
scored goals in the final period for the North Stars, but it was too
little, too late for the tournament runner-up.
