FEATURE
The Starting VII
Week 9
By Aaron Brown
Seven things to look for in the Week 9 of the 2009 season:
I. Catholic League Tournament (Boys)
Fenwick looks to maintain their perfect record and gear
up for another state title run, but will need to get past rivals Brother
Rice, St Patrick, St Ignatius, and Loyola to do it. Tournament play begins
on Friday night, with a tough matchup between Loyola and St Ignatius serving
as the featured game.
II. Catholic League Tournament (Girls)
The girls' tournament starts on Thursday night, but the
fireworks should start on Saturday morning, as St Ignatius and Mother
McAuley could meet in the semifinals in a preview of their potential
sectional matchup. Fenwick earned a bye with an undefeated season and will
face the winner of the Loyola/Marian game on Saturday as well.
III. West Suburban Conference Tournament (Boys)
The last time Oak Park and Lyons met, the Huskies held on
for a narrow one-goal victory. The two could meet again on Saturday if they
can get past York, Hinsdale Central, Hinsdale South, and Morton.
IV. Central Suburban League Tournament (Boys)
Evanston, Glenbrook South, and New Trier will have one
more chance to square off before the sectional competition begins next week
at this weekend's tournament.
V. CPS Tournament (Boys/Girls)
Will Curie and Young meet to decide the top boys' team in
the Chicago Public League on Saturday? The Condors are undefeated in the
league this season, including a win over the Dolphins. On the girls' side,
Young has been perfect but will need to withstand a challenge from either
Lane, Northside, or Curie.
VI. Mid-Suburban League Championships (Boys/Girls)
The MSL wraps up their season with championship games
this week, as Fremd takes on Wheeling on Wednesday for the girls' title and
Schaumburg hosts Rolling Meadows on Thursday to play for the boys' crown.
VII. McAuley at Stevenson (Girls)
Two teams with state qualifying aspirations face off in
Lincolnshire on Wednesday night after their game from Week 8 was postponed
due to pool problems. McAuley will be gearing up for the MCAC Tournament
afterwards, while Stevenson hosts a tournament on Saturday.
The First Sub
Stevenson Co-Ed Tournament
The Patriots play host to Naperville Central, Neuqua
Valley, and Lincoln-Way Central as the four squads look to prepare
themselves for the following week's sectional competition.
The Second Sub
Mundelein vs New Trier (Boys/Girls)
Both the boys and girls teams at Mundelein and New Trier
have thoughts of earning a state berth, so this last week battle will give
them one additional test before sectionals.
The Third Sub
LWE vs LWC; LWE vs H-F
Keep on eye on the SWSC matchups on the girls' side in
the final week of the season; these three teams will be fighting for a state
berth the following week.
