The Starting VII
Week 7
By Aaron Brown
Seven things to look for in the Week 7 of the 2009 season:
I. Naperville Central at Fenwick (Boys)
Tuesday night's matchup features the top two teams in the
state; the Friars won the earlier meeting between the teams 14-4 and remain
undefeated after their trip to Florida, will NC finished the weekend with
wins over GBS and Mundelein and enter the week with a 17-1 mark.
II. Stevenson Tournament (Girls)
Stevenson's annual tournament welcomes three Michigan
teams (Huron, Pioneer, Rockford) and several of the top teams from Illinois
(Fenwick, McAuley, Mundelein).
III. Brother Rice Tournament (Boys)
The always-tough Brother Rice Tournament matches the
Crusaders up with ranked teams like Loyola, Lockport, Sandburg, St Patrick
and also includes Naperville North, St Rita, and Hinsdale Central.
IV. GBS Tournament (Boys)
This postponed tournament from Week 1 gets started on
Friday night and features state contenders Oak Park, GBS, and Evanston.
V. Naperville Central at Fenwick (Girls)
#1 Fenwick plays host to #4 Naperville Central
in a matchup of undefeated teams in Week 7.
VI. Schaumburg at Stevenson (Boys)
The Saxons have key wins over Mundelein and St Patrick
this season and will look for another quality win over the Patriots on
Monday night. Meanwhile, Stevenson has continued to improve, with wins over
Loyola and St Patrick last week, so a win over Schaumburg could give them
even more momentum as the season winds down.
VII. GBN Sectional Preview
Loyola at Glenbrook South (Boys)
New Trier at Evanston (Boys)
The Ramblers face GBS on Monday night, while the Trevians
travel to Evanston to take on the Wildkits in two games that feature the top
contenders for a state berth at the GBN Sectional.
The First Sub
Lockport at LWE (Boys)
LWE at Sandburg (Boys)
Sandburg at Lockport (Boys)
The SouthWest Suburban Conference could very well be
decided this week, as the above three fixtures should play a big part in the
final season standings. LWE enters the week with a 7-0 conference record,
while Sandburg has just one loss and Lockport has two losses.
The Second Sub
The Sectional Seed Meetings
The brackets for the 2009 playoffs will be unveiled this
week after the coaches meet to determine the seeds for each sectional
competition on Wednesday night.
