There is a lot to sort out in the first two weeks in relation to the rankings. From all the new terminology to the different ratings, it can be easy to get lost in the shuffle. Hopefully this page can break things down and help you understand the different rankings and figure out exactly what they mean. As a long-time sports fan, I have followed how different sports use these systems. From the BCS in college football to the RPI in college basketball, these things can be confusing at first but can be highly informative once they are understood. Here is a quick breakdown: · Top 20 Polls - A panel of coaches votes on the top teams in the state. Votes are calculated and provide a look at how the coaches see the order of teams after each week. · Complete Rankings - The top 20 teams are chosen by the coaches, and I rank the rest of the teams based on things like win-loss records, strength of schedule, and quality wins. · Illpolo Power Rankings - My personal vote for the top ten, which is simply my own opinion after watching as many games as possible and following the results. · Strength of Schedule (SOS) - Calculates how tough a teams' average opponent is, and your SOS ranking shows how your schedule compares to other teams. This index changes as the opponents you have faced move in the complete rankings. · Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) - A complicated yet accurate index which calculates your winning percentage with your strength of schedule to determine where you rank compared to other teams. Hopefully this helped clear some things up and helps make the rankings more organized. If you have questions about any of these systems, feel free to contact me at illpolo@yahoo.com with any questions.
