Stevenson Tournament Serves as a Prelude To State

By Aaron Brown

ILLINOIS -- With just over a week remaining in the regular season, this weekend's Stevenson Tournament becomes very important to a handful of teams with aspirations of qualifying for the state tournament. Brother Rice and Fenwick, the top two teams in the state, head a nine-team field that begins play tonight at 5:00pm and concludes on Saturday afternoon. With Stevenson serving as the host site for state in three weeks, many of the teams playing this weekend will look to return to the pool in Lincolnshire if they can win their respective sectionals in two weeks.

Stevenson, the host school, finds itself in the most competitive preliminary bracket, with games tonight against #7 St Patrick and #4 Naperville Central. The twelfth-ranked Patriots have built some momentum with recent wins over Loyola and Evanston, and will look to advance to the championship bracket with two wins on Friday night. St Patrick is dealing with a few injuries to key players, but Brendan Blume has elevated his game, leading the Shamrocks to an overtime win over Evanston this week. Meanwhile, Naperville Central will look to improve on last year's showing at the tournament, where they went 3-1.

Fenwick will face its' toughest challenge in their first game on Monday night against #6 Mundelein, who they beat 12-9 two weeks ago. They also take on Lake Forest in the last game of the evening.

Brother Rice will also look to advance to the championship bracket tonight, as they match up against Oak Park at 5:45pm and finish with Palatine at 8:00pm.

Live coverage of the tournament begins at 5:00pm on Friday night.
