Game Preview - Naperville Central (25-2) enters the state tournament after knocking off Naperville North 8-6 at the Neuqua Valley sectional. In his senior season, Derek Wilson has emerged as a prolific scorer, with numerous game-winning shots under his belt. He is not on his own, as senior hole set Matt McNichols and sophomore hole guard Kevin Bell give the Redhawks three viable scoring options on the offensive end. The emergence of sophomore driver Pat Leclair has been key to Central's success, while Mike Leclair, Don Lambka, and Ryan McCracken help with all the little things and play strong defense. Quietly, sophomore goalie Corey Stein has emerged as one of the best in Illinois, as his last performance against Naperville North (17 saves, 6 goals allowed) was remarkable.
Stevenson (23-6) advanced to state with a 15-10 win over Mundelein, their fourth victory over the Mustangs in 2004 in as many tries. They are led by the shooting of senior Steve Michelau, who has one of the most accurate shots in Illinois. Alan Lagunov is healthy after a short layoff, and his versatility is important to the Patriots' success. Stevenson has a strong cast of starters and dependable subs, including Mike Hall, Damon Smith, Mike Terchin, Ryan Calacci, Brad Westrich, and Steve Fabyan. Senior goaltender George Renfrew has also had an impressive season for the Patriots.
Naperville Central won the only meeting between the two teams this year at the the Stevenson Tournament 7-4.
