Game Preview - In the opening game of the boys tournament, New Trier takes on Palatine in a matchup featuring two of the top individual players in the state. Jon Haga has scored 204 goals on the season for Palatine, while New Trier's Gerrit Adams was named Illpolo Defensive Player of the Year for his ability to shut down most offenses at two meters.
New Trier (19-5) comes into state after beating rival Loyola in the closing seconds of their sectional final. Chris Soper took a pass from defender Gerrit Adams, slipped his defender, then beat the goaltender to the left corner to send the Trevians to their second state appearance in three years under head coach David Goodspeed. New Trier has remarkable depth, as players like Matt Sweeney, Dan Nyhan, Charlie Hilbrant, and Tom Saleh contribute on both ends of the pool. Bryant Leech has been impressive down the stretch of the season in goal for New Trier, while a cast of veteran players that includes sharpshooter Alex Robb, Matt Nowlin, and Sam Wampler can provide whatever is needed for the Trevians to be successful.
In order for New Trier to succeed, they will need to stop Haga. He is the offensive centerpiece for the Pirates, as he scored 204 goals this season and has 495 for his career. He is backed by sprinter Kyle Sorenson (57 goals) and Skylar Davis (49 goals), who normally look to take advantage of open shots when defenses double team Haga. Kyle Finnegan is the vocal leader for the Pirates in goal, and his aggressive play in the net helps the Palatine defense.
Palatine (21-6) went undefeated in the MSL conference, beating Wheeling in the championship game. They steamrolled through the Barrington sectional, posting wins over Barrington and Fremd to get to the state tournament. Earlier this season, they won the Mundelein Tournament, beating the host Mustangs and Lyons Township in the process. They also posted impressive wins against Oak Park and McHenry earlier this year. |
