Hinsdale South Upsets York By Aaron Brown
Hinsdale, IL -- Hinsdale South upset #17 York 6-5 on Tuesday night in double overtime, as the Hornets beat their West Suburban rival for the first time in their short history.
York took an early lead in the game, and headed into halftime ahead 4-1. The Hornets scored two quick goals in the fourth period to cut the advantage down to 5-3. They added another late goal, then scored twice in the final twenty seconds to send the game into overtime. Hornets' goalie Brittany Rowley launched a shot that landed just inside the goal with only 0:02 remaining in regulation to tie the game.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first overtime period, but Hinsdale South's Heather Stephenson scored her second goal of the night in the second overtime to put the Hornets ahead 6-5. Rowley and the defense shut York down the rest of the way and earned a hard-fought victory. The defense only allowed one goal in the second half and in two overtime sessions.
The win improved Hinsdale South to 14-10 on the year, the same record as York, as the teams head into the West Suburban Conference Tournament this weekend. The upset win for the Hornets was their first victory over York, as last season York beat Hinsdale South in the WSC Tournament. The win also comes one week after Hinsdale South nearly upset #18 Waubonsie Valley, as they fell to the Warriors 8-7. |
