New Trier 9 Evanston 3 By Aaron Brown
Winnetka, IL -- A balanced offensive attack and another solid defensive effort from Gerrit Adams helped New Trier earn a 9-3 victory over Evanston on Wednesday night.
New Trier 3-0 after the first quarter and took a 6-1 lead into halftime. The teams traded goals in the third period to make it 8-3 heading into the fourth quarter, but New Trier put the clamps down on Evanston's offense and wound up with a 9-3 victory. New Trier's Ricky Dsida made five saves in the final period to preserve the victory for the Trevians.
Chris Soper scored three goals for New Trier, including two in the first quarter, while Charlie Hilbrandt and Adams each scored twice. In the second half, Tom Saleh, Dan Nyhan, and Sam Wampler all tallied goals for the Trevians. New Trier's goalies Bryant Leech and Dsida combined to allow only three goals in the entire game, as Leech only allowed two scores in third quarter and Dsida allowed just one shallow goal from Evanston's Alex Johnson in the first half.
Johnson scored the Wildkits' only first half goal on a lob shot from four meters, and Tim Fodor scored twice in the third quarter to close the gap to 7-3. But Nyhan scored from seven meters out after a foul to make it 8-3, and Adams successfully turned Johnson at two meters to draw a penalty shot, and he proceeded to slam home the free shot into the right corner past Evanston's Kevin Paulson to make it 9-3.
Evanston had five shots on goal in the fourth period, but Dsida turned each shot away to keep New Trier's lead at 9-3. The Trevians went to a ball control offense, and their only true chance at a goal came as Matt Sweeney made a brilliant steal at halfcourt and made a quick pass to Wampler on the left side, but Paulson made a diving save to prevent another goal.
The win sets up a game between Loyola and New Trier which will determine the top seed at next month's Glenbrook North sectional. The Ramblers also knocked off Evanston earlier this season. With the loss, the Wildkits likely will end up as the third seed at the sectional. New Trier will travel to Wilmette to take on Loyola at 5:00pm next Monday.
