St Ignatius Beats Latin 4-3 By Aaron Brown
Chicago, IL -- St Ignatius beat Latin 4-3 in a game that could be a preview of next month's sectional championship at UIC. The Wolfpack, who host the Chicago sectional, got two goals from Meg Lenahan, including the game-winner, to give Ignatius the victory.
In the opening quarter, St Ignatius had five quality shots against the Romans, but four hit the post and they could not get on the board. Meanwhile, the Wolfpack's pressing defense held Latin without a shot in the first period.
St Ignatius got on the board first as Nora Kennelly scored from her own four meter line after the swim-off to make the score 1-0. Lenehan scored two minutes later from the right wing off an assist from Yadi Leon in hole set. Leon then scored with 2:22 left in half after recovering a rebound from Meredith Messerle's outside shot. Latin has 4 shots on goal. Kennelly made four saves for the Wolfpack to keep the score 3-0 at halftime.
Lexie Kamerman scored from two meters in the first minute of the third quarter on a backhand shot. She scored again with 3:48 left in the period on sweep shot that caught Carney with her hands down and went past her head. The Wolfpack was held scoreless and the teams entered the fourth quarter with Ignatius leading 3-2.
In the fourth quarter, both goalies made three quick saves in the first two minutes to keep the lead at one. Lenahan broke the scoring drought for Ignatius after making a steal and going coast-to-coast to score with 3:32 left for a 4-2 advantage. Latin's shot on a powerplay was denied by Kennelly, but Kiki Diaz forced her to take the ball under to draw a four meter penalty. Diaz would score on the penalty shot to cut the Wolfpack's lead to 4-3. Latin turned the ball over on their next two chances to tie the game, and Kennelly made a save on a Perla Alvarez shot with 0:46 seconds left in the game. Lenahan was denied on Ignatius' next possession, but Latin's pass to two meters was stolen by Leon. Latin would get the ball back for one last chance to tie the game, but Kennelly made a save and the Wolfpack ran out the clock for the 4-3 win.
