Stevenson Denies Latin's Upset Bid By Aaron Brown
Lincolnshire, IL -- Stevenson jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half en route to an 10-2 victory over Latin on Monday night. Terri Bukofzer scored five goals and Keely Wimer added four scores to carry the Patriots to the nonconference win.
Bukofzer started the scoring in the first period, tipping in a pass from Wimer to put the Patriots on top 1-0. Wimer made the score 2-0 moments later, as she took a pass from Sarah Boedecker at two meters and slammed home a goal with 3:39 to go in the period. Later in the period, Bukofzer made a steal from the Latin goalie and shoved the ball across the goalline to give Stevenson a 3-0 advantage.
The Patriots added to their lead to start the second quarter, as Bukofzer took a pass from Katie Michelau on a drive to score her third goal of the game. Latin finally got on the board on a powerplay with 1:27 remaining in the first half, as #3 scored from the top left to make it 4-1. The Romans scored again with 0:36 remaining when #5 scored from the left wing to make it 4-2. Wimer added a powerplay goal with only 0:11 left in the half, as she found the right corner of the net from the top left to give Stevenson a 5-2 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Bukofzer added a quick goal and then drew a penalty shot at two meters, which Kelly Wimer put inside the right corner to give Stevenson a comfortable 7-2 lead. Michelau made it 8-2 with a goal from the left wing towards the end of the period, and Latin was unable to cut into the Patriots' lead.
Both teams applied tight defensive pressure in the fourth quarter, but Wimer added her fourth goal with 3:13 left in the game for a 9-2 Stevenson lead. Bukofzer scored her fifth goal when she nailed a shot from the point on a power play with 1:39 remaining to put Stevenson ahead 10-2. The Patriots would hold the Romans scoreless in the second half to earn the 10-2 victory.
