Stevenson Edges Mundelein In Overtime 17-15 By Aaron Brown
Lincolnshire, IL -- In the fourth version of the rivalry between Stevenson and Mundelein this season, the Patriots outlasted the Mustangs in overtime to come away with a 17-15 victory on Tuesday night. In a game which saw seven lead changes in regulation, Stevenson scored the only goal of the first overtime and added two penalty shot goals in the second overtime session to beat Mundelein for the third time this year. Keely Wimer led all scorers with eight, adding two penalty shot goals in the last three minutes to help the Patriots to victory.
Aubrey Wanland started the scoring for Stevenson with a goal from the left wing, and Terri Bukofzer made a steal and scored an unassisted goal to put the Patriots up 2-0 in the early stages of the first quarter. Maggie Gates put a backhand into the net to cut the lead in half, but Bukofzer drew a four meter penalty that Keely Wimer slammed into the left corner to make the score 3-1 with 1:58 remaining in the period. Jordan Jaeckel found Callie Andrysiak wide open in the left corner for a goal with 0:39 left, but Wimer responded with a two meter sweep shot just eight seconds later to put Stevenson ahead 4-2. In the closing seconds of the quarter, Jaeckel's shot hit the crossbar, but Gates grabbed the rebound and led Jaeckel with a pass and she drew a four meter penalty. Andrysiak's shot went just inside the right corner and the Mustangs cut the lead to 4-3 heading to the second period.
Gates tied the score at 4-4 with a powerplay goal to start the second quarter, but Stevenson quickly reclaimed the lead when Cara Amhaus scored on a powerplay on Stevenson's next possession. Gates assisted Dhara Pandya on a goal with 2:48 left in the half to tie the score at 5-5. The Patriots had the answer once again, as Wimer got open on a breakaway to give Stevenson a 6-5 lead. Jamie Johnson made a steal for the Mustangs and assisted Jaeckel on a breakaway goal to tie the score again, and then Mundelein took their first lead as Pandya scored on a powerplay with under one minute to play in the half. Their lead did not last long, as Wimer scored on backhand from two meters out just before the half to tie the score at 7-7.
Sam Gibson put the Patriots ahead 8-7 early in the third period, but Gates, Jaeckel and Johnson each scored goals in the next two minutes to give Mundelein a 10-8 lead. Bukofzer helped slice into the lead with a two meter goal, but Johnson drove for another score to give the Mustangs an 11-9 advantage. Jessie Shopiro scored her first goal of the game to make it 11-10, and Wimer got loose to score on a breakaway to tie the score at 11-11 at the end of the third period.
In the fourth quarter, Wimer found Bukofzer open at two meters for a goal to put Stevenson ahead 12-11, but the Mustangs came right back as Jaeckel assisted Andrysiak with a two meter goal of her own to even the score at 12-12. Jaeckel found Gates open on the left wing for a powerplay goal to give Mundelein a slight lead, but Katie Michelau evened the score at 13-13 with an outside shot from the left side. Andrysiak would give the Mustangs a 14-13 lead on a pass assisted once again by Jaeckel, but Wimer scored on a seven meter shot with 1:51 left in regulation to tie the score at 14-14 and eventually send the game into overtime. Michelau would have the best chance in the final minute to win the game for Stevenson, but her drive was stolen and Mundelein's final shot attempt was also stolen and Stevenson ran out the clock.
In the first overtime, Mundelein goalie Liz McClure made two saves for the Mustangs to keep the game tied, while Jessica Flor stopped Jaeckel's driving shot with 2:04 remaining. Wimer then drew an ejection, which led to a goal for Shopiro from the top right to put the Patriots ahead 15-14. Gates and Andrysiak both had good chances from two meters out, but Flor made key saves on both shots to keep Stevenson ahead at the end of the first overtime.
Stevenson started the second overtime by drawing an ejection, but McClure stopped two consecutive shots to hold the Patriots from scoring. However, Wimer swam at the goalie and the ball went underwater and a four meter penalty shot was awarded to the Patriots. Wimer planted a shot in the left corner to make the lead 16-14 with only 2:09 left to play. Mundelein fought back, as Gates shot from the left wing was blocked by Flor, but Jaeckel grabbed the rebound and fed a wide-open Andrysiak at two meters to cut the lead to 16-15 with 1:18 remaining. Mundelein would have a chance to tie the score on a powerplay, but Bukofzer made a steal with 0:30 on the clock and Stevenson called a timeout. With time running out, Mundelein called a timeout even though they had none remaining, forcing the Patriots to take a penalty shot with 0:07 remaining. If Stevenson would miss, the Mustangs would have the ball back for one last shot, but Wimer cancelled any plans of a miracle with a shot into the top left of the net for her ninth goal and a 17-15 win for Stevenson.
Wimer scored eight goals in the win, while Bukofzer added three, Shopiro had two, and Michelau, Gibson, Wanland, and Amhaus each had one goal apiece for Stevenson. The Mustangs were led by Gates and Andrysiak, who each scored five goals. Johnson and Pandya each added two goals, while Jaeckel had one goal and seven assists.
