Fenwick Escapes Stevenson With Overtime Win By Aaron Brown
Lincolnshire, IL -- Stevenson came from behind in the second half to send their game with Fenwick into overtime, but Oscar Calderon scored two extra session goals and goalie Dan Evon made a key save with just seconds remaining to lead the Friars to a 13-12 win over the Patriots on Thursday night.
Mark Melnyk gave Fenwick a 5-3 lead with a goal just seconds before halftime, and they quickly added to their advantage at the start of the third quarter. Chris Parolin drew an ejection in the first minute of the period, and Melnyk scored from the point to make the score 6-3. The Patriots responded when Kevin Alland found Ryan Calacci in front of the goal for a quick score to cut the lead to 6-4. Steve Michelau skipped a sidearm shot from the left wing past Fenwick goalie Chris Jones to trim Fenwick's advantage to 6-5 just moments later. Calderon had a chance to score with 1:49 left in the third, but his lob shot landed on the goalline and was saved by Alan Lagunov before it could cross the line. Melnyk boosted the Friars' to lead 7-5 with a backhand shot from two meters with 1:32 left in the third period, but Alland drove towards the goal and drew a four meter penalty for Stevenson with 0:41 remaining in the third. Michelau's penalty shot hit inside the left corner to make the score 7-6 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, Melnyk stripped Alland at the point and scored on an unassisted breakaway to make it 8-6 with only 4:39 to play. Stevenson had a chance to cut into the lead on a powerplay, but Michelau's shot from the left wing hit the post. Melynk then found Luke Baldwin open on left side, and his lob shot landed inside the right post to put Fenwick ahead 9-6 with 3:30 remaining.
With their backs against the wall, the Patriots scored three straight goals in the next minute to tie the game at 9-9. First, Calacci leaned back and batted in a pass from Lagunov at two meters to make it 9-7. Then, Michelau stole the ball from Jones in front of the Fenwick net and manuevered a left-handed flip shot into the back of the goal while going underwater to make it 9-8. Finally, with only 2:01 remaining, Michelau hesistated and then fired a shot from half tank past Jones into the right corner to tie the score.
Fenwick would bounce back, as Parolin drew an ejection on the Friars' next possession, and Dunlap took a pass from Baldwin on the right post to beat Stevenson goalie George Renfrew to make the score 10-9 with 1:29 remaining. After a timeout, however, Alland walked up to four meters and found the back of the net with a shot to make it 10-10. Parolin had a chance to win it for Fenwick, but his shot with 0:49 seconds left hit the crossbar. He made up for the miss on defense, taking the ball away from Michelau with 0:24 seconds remaining. But Michelau made a steal with 0:16 seconds left and the Patriots called a quick timeout to set up a play. But Lagunov's pass attempt to Michelau at two meters was stolen by Jones, and Fenwick's last second shot attempt was defelcted as the game headed for overtime.
In the extra session, Kevin Kysiak of Fenwick pushed in a rebound goal after Parolin had a shot saved denied by Renfrew to make it 11-10. Later in the period, Calderon took a pass from Parolin and spun at two meters to find the back of the net to make it 12-10. Stevenson would score on a powerplay goal from Alland from the top left with 1:32 left in extra time to make the score 12-11, but Calderon scored after a foul at seven meters to put Fenwick back up by two goals with just over a minute remaining. Michelau scored on a seven meter shot with 0:47 left to make the score 13-12, and Fenwick would give the ball back to the Patriots with 0:18 left in the overtime. After three quick fouls, Lagunov took a turnaround shot from seven meters that was blocked by Evon, who swam the ball to the corner as time expired.
