Fenwick Defeats Mundelein 21-6 By Aaron Brown
Oak Park, IL -- Alison Pavlik and Emily Bonk each scored four goals to lead #1 Fenwick past #3 Mundelein 21-6 on Tuesday night. The Friars improved to 17-0 on the season as seven players scored in the game and goalie Erin Foley made 13 saves.
Mundelein (8-5) kept things close in the first half, as Fenwick (17-0) did not score their first goal until 3:46 remained in the opening quarter. Emily Bonk took a pass from Farrin Rixter and scored from two meters to put the Friars on top 1-0. Bonk would hit the crossbar on her next shot attempt from seven meters, but she got her own rebound and assisted Rixter on a goal to make it 2-0. The two would combine to give the Friars a 3-0 lead a minute later, with Rixter getting a pass from Bonk at two meters to score her second goal of the game. Bonk then tallied her third assist on a pass to the left flat to Keely Baldwin, who hit the corner to give Fenwick a 4-0 advantage with 2:04 left in the period. The Mustangs finally got on the board at the end of the period, as goalie Liz McClure made a save and led Maggie Gates with a pass to set up a four meter penalty shot. Gates' shot went directly into the left corner and made the score 4-1 at the end of the quarter.
Fenwick picked up where they left off in the second quarter, as Liz Perry drew a four meter penalty and Emily Bonk hit the shot to make the score 5-1. Alison Pavlik then found Mary McCarthy open on the right wing, and McCarthy lofted a lob shot into the back of the goal to make it 6-1. Perry made the lead 7-1 after grabbing a rebound off her own miss and scoring with 2:27 left in the first half. Once again, Mundelein closed out period with a goal, as Callie Andrysiak tipped in a perfect pass from Jordan Jaeckel on a powerplay to make it 7-2.
Perry started the third quarter by driving from the point with the ball and hitting the right corner of the goal to make the Fenwick lead 8-2. McCarthy then made a steal moments late and assisted Bonk on a breakaway goal to make it 9-2. The Mustangs fought back, as McClure, playing in the field in the second half, hit a shot from the left wing on a powerplay to make it 9-3. However, Fenwick scored three straight powerplay goals to push the advantage to 12-3 near the end of the quarter. First, Perry made a steal and assisted Rixter on a wide-open breakaway for a goal. Then, Friars' goalie Erin Foley made a save and assisted Baldwin on her second goal of the game. McCarthy made her fifth steal and assisted Baldwin for her second straight breakaway goal a minute later, and McCarthy added a shot from seven meters out to cap a 4-0 Fenwick run. Mundelein was able to score twice more later in the period, as Andrysiak scored on a four meter penalty shot and McClure pushed a rebound past the goalline to make it 13-6. Bonk would add her fourth goal of the game near the end of the period to make it 14-6.
The Friars' owned the fourth quarter, outscoring Mundelein 7-0 to seal the win. Perry assisted Pavlik on a shot from the right wing, then scored a goal of her own on a lob shot in the first minute of the period. Pavlik then scored the next two goals, with the first assist coming from Bonk and the second on a pass from Christina Romano. Moira Preston added two goals in the fourth quarter, while Pavlik scored her fourth on an assist by Jenna Byrne to end the game.
Seven players scored in the victory for Fenwick. Bonk and Pavlik each had four goals, Perry, Rixter, and Baldwin had three, and McCarthy and Preston tallied two scores. Goalie Erin Foley made thirteen saves to help hold Mundelein to only six goals. Andrysiak and McClure each had two goals to lead the Mustangs.
Mundelein will travel to the Lake County Tournament this weekend, while Fenwick's next game is at home against Marian Catholic tomorrow night.
