Mundelein Dismantles Fremd 13-6 By Aaron Brown
Palatine, IL -- Mundelein bounced back from a difficult weekend at the St Pats Tourney with a 13-6 victory over Fremd on Tuesday night. Mark Schuessler led the way with 8 goals while Andrew Peterson returned from the National Zone Tryouts with 15 saves and 3 assists in the win.
The Mustangs started slowly, as they got their first goal from Mark Selle with 2:24 remaining in the first period. Fremd's Russ Reichart tied the score by waiting in the Vikings' offensive end and scoring on a wide-open breakaway. Schuessler had the answer for Mundelein, scoring two quick goals in the final two minutes of the quarter to put the Mustangs back on top 3-1 heading into the second period.
Fremd got close with a goal from Reichart from two meters in the first minute of the second quarter to cut the lead to 3-2. That was as close as Fremd would get, as Geoff Schott scored for Mundelein from the left wing and Brian Sheehan scored a powerplay goal to make the score 5-2. Schuessler added the next two goals for the Mustangs, and Schott found Greg Peck open at two meters for a goal in the final seconds of the half to make it 8-2.
Schuessler added another goal at the start of the half to push the lead to 9-2, but Fremd got a lucky break when a four-meter penalty was called on the Mustangs with 5:29 to go in the third period. The shot was saved by a diving Peterson, but the referees incorrectly ruled that the ball went across the goal line. Peterson got his revenge on Fremd's next possession, making a save and assisting Schuessler on a breakaway goal to make the score 10-3. Schuessler then found Peck open for his second goal with 2:32 left in the quarter to make it 11-3. Fremd added three late goals, but Schuessler scored to close out both the third and fourth quarters to wrap up a 13-6 victory.
The Mustangs were led by Schuessler's eight goals, Peck added two, and Schott, Sheehan and Selle also scored one goal each. Reichart and Darrell Phee each scored three goals in the loss for Fremd.
