Loyola Holds Off Evanston 12-10 By Aaron Brown
Wilmette, IL -- Loyola won the first battle for teams vying for the number one seed at the Glenbrook North sectional on Monday night by coming from behind to beat Evanston 12-10. After trailing by a goal after the first and third quarters, the #9 Ramblers came from behind to defeat the Wildkits by scoring five goals in the final period and shutting down Jordan Binder and Alex Negronida down the stretch.
Colin Hulseman put Loyola on top on their second possession of the game with a goal from two meters. Evanston responded later in the period as Negronida's pass to Alex Johnson led to an ejection and a goal from Tim Fodor on a shot from the point to tie the score at 1-1. The Wildkits put some pressure on the Ramblers by scoring two quick goals, as Fodor assisted Negronida on a drive for a goal and Negronida hit a shot from the right wing on a pass from goalie Kevin Paulson to make the score 3-1 with only 0:40 remaining in the opening quarter. Loyola's Kevin Riordan made cut the lead down to 3-2 at the end of the quarter on a shot from the left flat after catching a pass from Hulseman.
The momentum had clearly shifted, as the Ramblers added goals from Riordan and Tommy Schewchuck to take their first lead since the opening minute. Riordan gave Loyola a 5-3 lead on a powerplay shot from the point after Evanston's shallow goalie was ejected for elbowing with 5:13 to go in the half. Binder finally got on the board with a two meter goal to make it 5-4, but the Ramblers countered with Riordan's third goal of the game to maintain a two goal lead. Before the half ended, Evanston evened the score on goals by Negronida and Kelly Wunder.
Evanston took the lead in the third quarter as Binder and Alex Johnson each scored, while Loyola's lone goal of the quarter came on a breakaway score by Schewchuck to make it 8-7 heading into the final quarter.
That is when the Ramblers took complete control, as Pat McLaughlin and Hulseman scored in the first minute of the fourth to give Loyola a one goal lead. Evanston had a chance to tie immediately on a powerplay, but three consecutive shots hit the post and they could not finish on any of the rebound opportunities. A minute later, Negronida hit the crossbar on a shot from the right flat, only this time his rebound was recovered by Fodor, who easily put his second goal on the board and tied the score at 9-9. Loyola looked like they would seal the game in the closing minutes, as Riordan scored from the point and Hulseman added a goal to put the Ramblers on top 11-9. The Wildkits got to within 11-10 on Wunder's rebound goal, but that was as close at they would get, as McLaughlin sealed the Loyola victory with a goal from the left wing in the final minute and Loyola emerged victorious 12-10.
Riordan led Loyola with four goals, while Colin Hulseman added three scores. For Evanston, Negronida led the way with three goals, and Wunder, Fodor, and Binder each scored twice in the loss.
