Sandburg beats Naperville North 7-4 By Aaron Brown
Naperville, IL -- With Spring Break approaching for Naperville North, the Huskies were left with a depleted lineup for their Friday night contest with Sandburg. The Eagles were able to take advantage of that fact en route to a 7-4 victory over the Huskies.
Jon Kryzminski and Rob Murphy each scored three goals in the win for Sandburg (7-1), as goalie Tommy Strode made seven key saves to help the Eagles get the win. Kryzminski started the scoring in the first quarter, grabbing a rebound at four meters out and hitting the left corner for a goal and a 1-0 lead. Chris Cloy made the score 2-0 when he caught a pass from Jon Christensen at the left wing and sent the ball into the lower left corner. Naperville North's freshman Alex Buck drew a four meter penalty on Sandburg late in the first, but his shot hit the post and bounced back to him. With no defensive pressure, he was able to capitalize and score to cut the Eagles lead in half at 2-1. Murphy helped Sandburg go up 3-1 on a powerplay goal with 2:21 remaining in the first, but Mike Peters cut that lead down to 3-2 with a powerplay goal of his own at the end of the quarter.
Naperville North's Justin Licht kept the Huskies in the game, making five consecutive saves from point blank range in the second quarter. The Huskies were unable to benefit from two powerplay opportunities in the quarter, and Sandburg finally made them pay when Kryzminski scored his second goal of the game from four meters out to make it 4-2 at halftime.
Kryzminski and Murphy each scored early in the third quarter, and it looked as if Sandburg was going to coast to a victory. But a little strategy from Huskies coach Kurt Johns quickly made the score 6-4, as Steve Tangen and Steve Hatcher both scored consecutive goals when they did not go back on defense and were left wide open for easy goals late in the third quarter.
Sandburg had a chance to put the game away in the fourth quarter after drawing a four meter penalty. But Licht made a tremendous diving save on the penalty shot to keep the score within two. The rebound caromed right back to the shooter, but Licht somehow managed to elevate once again and deflect the shot out of bounds. Naperville North (4-2) could not score in the next few minutes, and Murphy sealed the win for Sandburg with a goal from the left flat with 3:13 remaining in the game to make it 7-4. Sandburg's goalie Tommy Strode (7 saves) came up big in the final minute, making two consecutive saves to preserve the lead and give the Eagles the victory.
Licht ended the game making 18 total saves for the Huskies, who were playing without starters Andrew Fitch, Nick Landiak, and Jon Rapchak.
