Saturday - March 13, 2004 GAME RECAPS

 

FENWICK TOURNAMENT - Day Two

Oak Park, IL -- The Fenwick Tournament continued on Saturday with four preliminary games followed by nine championship round contests. In Friday night's games, Fenwick and Brother Rice won two games each to advance to the first place division, while Evanston won its' first game.

 

EVANSTON 16 LINCOLN-WAY EAST 10

The Wildkits started the action on Saturday morning with a 16-10 victory over Lincoln-Way East. The teams were tied at 4-4 after one quarter and went to the half tied up at 5-5. Evanston pulled away in the third, going up 11-8 by the end of the period. They added five more goals to come away with the win and advance to the first place division to compete with both Fenwick and Brother Rice in the evening. Alex Negronida continued to come up huge, scoring five goals and adding two assists. Jordan Binder added four goals and Andrew Olsen scored three times.

 

HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR 11 OAK PARK 10

In the second game, Homewood-Flossmoor gave Oak Park its' second straight loss of the tournament, pulling out an 11-10 victory. The Vikings led the entire way, and extended their lead to 11-8 in the closing minutes. Oak Park was able to score two late goals to make the final result close. Eric Olson was the leading scorer for Flossmoor, totaling four goals, while Oak Park's Kevin Williams scored five goals in the loss. Flossmoor would advance to the second place division after going 1-1 in the preliminary round, while Oak Park headed to the third place division.

 

STEVENSON 11 MUNDELEIN 7

In a back and forth game, Stevenson pulled away in the fourth quarter and held off Mundelein 11-7 to advance to the second place division of the tournament. The teams were tied at 6-6 entering the fourth quarter, but Mike Hall and Damon Smith scored consecutive goals for the Patriots to give them an 8-6 lead. After an ejection, Mundelein was awarded a four-meter shot when Stevenson did not have anyone leave the field of play. Mark Schuessler slammed home the penalty shot to cut the lead down to one at 8-7 with 4:28 remaining. That was was close as they would get as Stevenson scored three straight goals to seal the victory. Alan Lagunov assisted Smith on a 3-on-2 breakway to make it 9-7, and Lagunov scored from the right wing on a pass from Steve Michelau to lead 10-7. Mundelein's last chance to get within two goals was denied by goalie Patriots'  goalie George Renfrew, and Stevenson finished the game with Mike Terchin scoring on a powerplay goal with just 0:36 left in the game. Mundelein ended up advancing to the third place bracket in the loss.

 

ST PATS 8 LINCOLN-WAY EAST 7

The final preliminary game came down to the wire, as St Pats recorded their first win of the season, knocking off Lincoln-Way East in come from behind fashion. Joe Przekota scored on a backhand shot with 0:09 remaining after head coach Marty Gibson called a timeout to set up a play. The score gave the Shamrocks an 8-7 victory and helped them advance to the second place division. Brian Joyce had four goals and Przekota added two in the win. Lincoln-Way East fell to 0-2 in the tournament and moved on to the third place division.

 

MUNDELEIN 14 OAK PARK 11

Mundelein earned its' first win of the season with a 14-11 finish over Oak Park in the first game of the third place bracket. The Huskies cut Mundelein's lead to 5-3 with just 0:16 left in the first half, but Mundelein responded with a goal seven seconds later to lead by three at the half. They would never look back, as Oak Park had to fight to get the score to within 14-11 at the final horn. Mark Schuessler led the Mustangs with three goals, Greg Peck and Richard Ochab added two goals apiece, and Geoff Schott also added a goal.

 

STEVENSON 11 ST PATS 5

Stevenson had little trouble with St Pats in this game, winning the first game of the second place division by a final score of 11-5. Steve Michelau continued to lead the Patriots with five goals, while Alan Lagunov added four scores and Ryan Calacci also scored twice. Joe Przekota led the Shamrocks in the loss with two goals, while Brian Joyce, Patrick Cunningham, and Jim Amenitsch also scored for St Pats.

 

FENWICK 19 EVANSTON 9

Evanston kept it close in the first quarter, but Fenwick turned it on in the second half en route to a 19-9 victory in the first game of the first place division. The win assured the Friars of a chance to win the entire tournament in the final game of the weekend against Brother Rice. Eight players scored for Fenwick in the victory, as Kevin Kysiak emerged as a huge offensive threat with five goals in the game. Chris Parolin added four goals, while freshman Tom Parolin also scored three times. Paul Grusecki (2 goals), Paul Klotz (2 goals), freshman John Barrett, Oscar Calderon, and Bill Dunlap all scored for the Friars in the win. Evanston was lead by Alex Negronida, who continued to emerge as the Wildkits main offensive threat with three goals.

 

MUNDELEIN 13 LINCOLN-WAY EAST 6

Mundelein outscored Lincoln-Way East 9-2 in the last three quarters to earn a 13-6 win over Lincoln-Way East to emerge as the top team from the third place division. That gave them a final place of 7th in the tournament. The Mustangs were led by Greg Peck, who totaled five goals in the win. Schuessler added three scores and Mark Selle and Sean Larsen scored two goals apiece for Mundelein.

 

STEVENSON 14 HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR 11

Homewood-Flossmoor kept this one close the entire game, but Stevenson pulled away and capped off a 3-1 weekend to finish the tournament in fourth place with a 14-11 win. Steve Michelau had his biggest game of the tournament, leading the way for Stevenson with eight goals. Mike Hall and Mike Terchin each scored two goals for the Patriots in the win. Homewood-Flossmoor got four goals from Bret Rademaker and three scores from Eric Olson in the loss.

 

BROTHER RICE 14 EVANSTON 6

Brother Rice took care of business early, claiming an 7-0 lead after one period of play to run away with a first place division win and set up an tournament championship showdown with Fenwick. The Crusaders went on to win 14-6, as Mark DiCola led the way with five goals, while Matt Wood had three scores and Kevin McShane chipped in two goals of his own. Evanston finished the tournament 2-2 but also wrapped up an impressive third place finish.

 

OAK PARK 15 LINCOLN-WAY EAST 12

Oak Park claimed an eighth place finish at the tournament, securing their first win in a 15-12 shootout over Lincoln-Way East. The Huskies trailed 6-5 at the half, but took a 10-9 lead into the fourth quarter and never trailed again. Kevin Williams was dominant in the victory, scoring 10 goals and adding an assist. Mike Flynn contributed five goals for Oak Park. Lincoln-Way East, which ended up 0-4 in the tournament, finished in ninth place. Dan Zoellick scored five goals in the loss and had 11 total goals to lead Lincoln-Way East over the weekend.

 

HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR 11 ST PATS 10

St Pats hung around until the end, but Homewood-Flossmoor had just enough offense to squeak out an 11-10 win over the Shamrocks. Homewood-Flossmoor had a 5-1 lead after one quarter, but St Pats kept fighting back until they cut the lead down to 11-10 with just under one minute remaining in the contest. The Shamrocks called a timeout to set up a play with 0:18 left on the game clock, but they turned the ball over without getting a chance to tie the game and the Vikings hung on for the win. Homewood-Flossmoor went 2-2 over the weekend, good enough for a fifth place finish in the tournament. Mike Strein and Eric Olson had three goals apiece for the Vikings, while the Shamrocks were lead by Jim Amenitsch and Dan O'Connor, who each scored twice in the loss. St Pats ended the weekend 1-3, finishing in sixth place in the tournament.
