Boys Naperville Central 10 Evanston 8 April 28, 2005
Naperville Central overcame a 6-5 halftime deficit to finish the regular season with a 10-8 victory over #11 Evanston on Thursday night. Ryan Alberts scored from outside seven meters to break an 8-8 tie with 3:00 remaining, and Don Lambka added an insurance goal with :01 second left on the clock to clinch the win.
Andrew Olsen put Evanston on the board first with a backhand goal in the opening period, but Don Lambka evened the score with a goal from four-meters out moments later. Magee Clegg put the Wildkits ahead with a powerplay goal, but Kevin Bell hit a halfcourt shot at the buzzer to tie the game at the end of one quarter.
Ryan Alberts drew an ejection to start the second period, but his powerplay shot went over the goal on Central's first scoring opportunity. Clegg also misfired on an outside shot on Evanston's next possession, and Don Lambka scored a two meter goal to give the Redhawks their first lead of the game. Alex Negronida tallied his first goal to tie the game, but Alberts put Central ahead with a counterattack goal moments later. Naperville Central goalie Corey Stein made a save on Olsen's backhand shot from in front of the net, and Lambka drew an ejection that led to Scott Fleming's first goal to make the score 5-3. Negronida scored his second goal on a powerplay to get Evanston within one, and Kevin Paulson made two straight saves on Alberts to keep the Wildkits close. Negronida tied the game with a goal from seven meters out, and Chris Waller scored on a powerplay before the end of the half to help Evanston reclaim the lead.
Bell tied the score early in the third period with a seven meter goal, but Negronida countered that effort with a goal of his own to make the score 7-6 in favor of the Wildkits. Alberts tied the score with a goal at the end of the third period.
Stein denied Negronida on Evanston's first chance of the fourth quarter, and Fleming scored a powerplay goal after Bell drew an ejection with 4:40 remaining in the game. Tim Fodor tied the score at 8-8 with a powerplay goal with 3:20 left, but Alberts responded with an outside shot to put the Redhawks ahead for good with 3:00 left. Stein made three saves down the stretch of the game, while Paulson kept Evanston within one goal with two saves of his own. The Wildkits had one last chance on a powerplay with under one minute left, but Waller hit the post and Lambka made the final score 10-8 with a last-second goal while Evanston was trying to make a steal.
