2005 SEASON |
St Ignatius 8 Mother McAuley 6 (Girls) Fenwick Tournament April 1, 2005
-
Both teams started the game playing solid defense, as neither squad could get a quality scoring opportunity on their first few possessions. Laura Perez got McAuley on the board first with a driving goal, but Nora Kennelly evened things up at 1-1 with a shot from outside nine meters. Lily Gonzalez had the next scoring chance for McAuley, but her two meter shot was denied by Hybinette. St Ignatius claimed the lead at the end of the first quarter, as Kate Knibbs found Kennelly for a goal from seven meters out with just 0:33 remaining in the period.
Mother McAuley responded at the beginning of the second quarter, as Perez scored her second goal on a powerplay. Hybinette stopped Rosie Asfour's scoring chance to keep the scored tied, and Ali Durkin gave St Ignatius a 3-2 lead right before the half with a goal from the left wing with one second on the clock before halftime.
The Wolfpack took a two goal lead at the start of the third period when Kate Brankin hit a shot from the right wing to make it 4-2. Gonzalez got the Mighty Macs to within one with a goal less than a minute later, but Kennelly connected on a shot from seven meters out just eight seconds later to put Ignatius ahead 5-3. Molly Higgins hit the post on a lob shot that could have gotten McAuley to back within one, while Theresa Hennigan made a steal but was denied on a breakaway attempt by Hybinette to keep Ignatius ahead by two goals. McAuley's Maggie Wood scored her first goal of the game with 1:55 to play, as she nailed a shot from the right wing off a pass from Perez. The Wolfpack's Yadi Leon had the answer, as she scored a |

goal from the right wing as the shot clock expired to make the score 6-4. In the final minute of the third quarter, Ignatius began to pull away when Kennelly took a pass from Leon at two meters and scored on a backhand shot to put the Wolfpack ahead 7-4.
Mother McAuley fought back in the final period, as Wood scored on a seven meter shot and Asfour found the net on a powerplay lob shot to cut the lead down to 7-6 with 2:51 remaining in the game. On their next possession, however, Ignatius' Meredeith Messerle drew an ejection, made a quick pass to Knibbs, and got the return pass to score on a drive, giving the Wolfpack an 8-6 lead. Hybinette would not allow another goal as St Ignatius would open the tournament with a win.
Kennelly lead all scorers with four goals, while Knibbs, Brankin, Messerle, and Leon each scored once. Perez and Wood each scored two goals for McAuley, while Gonzalez and Asfour chipped in with one goal apiece in the losing cause.
St Ignatius will play New Trier tomorrow morning (7:00am) for a chance to advance to the first place bracket of the tournament. Mother McAuley will also look to avoid their second straight loss against New Trier at 10:00am on Saturday. W- |
