Evanston 14 Oak Park 12  (Boys)

#6 Evanston escaped #11 Oak Park with a 14-12 win on Tuesday night, erasing a three-goal deficit in the first half to earn the come-from-behind victory.

 

The Wildkits could not contain Kevin Williams in the early going, as the left-handed offensive standout for Oak Park scored the first two goals of the game. Chris Waller cut the lead in half with a goal, and Tim Silkaitis tied the score after a steal and a breakaway goal. Oak Park goalie Scott Dunlavey denied Alex Negronida on a breakaway attempt moments later, and Williams scored his third goal of the opening period to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead.

 

Williams scored another two-meter goal at the beginning of the second quarter, then assisted Mike Nickels on a goal to put the Huskies ahead 5-2. Dustin Sonneborn got Evanston within two with a deflected goal, but Williams responded with a score from the right wing to make it 6-3. Olsen scored from two meters to make it 6-4, but Williams had an answer with his sixth goal of the half. Before halftime, Tommy Doyle scored on a drive and Olsen scored from two meters out to slice the Oak Park down to one.

 

Oak Park led 7-6 at halftime, but Olsen grabbed a rebound and put in a backhand goal to tie the score with 5:36 left in the third period. Negronida drew a foul and scored on a seven-meter shot to give the Wildkits their first lead of the game, while Tony Mustoe made a steal and scored an unassisted goal to put Evanston ahead 9-7 moments later. Dunlavey kept the Huskies close with a great save on Evanston's next possession, and Sean Mitchell scored a powerplay goal from the right wing to cut the lead to 9-8 at the end of the third quarter.

 

In the first two minutes of the final period, the Wildkits extended the lead with Negronida's second goal of the game, and Waller hit a skip shot from outside seven meters to put Evanston ahead 11-8. Williams scored again from the right wing for the Huskies, but Negronida responded with a goal from the right flat to

keep the Wildkits' ahead by three. Williams and Negronida traded goals once again moments later, while Mitchell scored on a powerplay to get Oak Park to within two at 13-11. Mitchell scored his second straight powerplay goal from the right wing to cut the advantage down to 13-12, but an Evanston timeout led to Olsen's backhand goal with 0:19 left in the game as the shot clock expired, and Oak Park could not score again.

 

Olsen and Negronida scored four goals apiece in the win, while Waller scored two and Silkaitis, Mustoe, Sonneborn, and Doyle all had one tally for Evanston. Williams was unstoppable for the Huskies with a total of eight goals, while Mitchell scored three times and Nickels had one goal.
