St Ignatius 13 St Viator 9

Nora Kennelly scored seven goals and recorded four assists and six steals to lead #3 St Ignatius past #15 St Viator 13-9 on Monday night. St Viator scored four unanswered goals in the second quarter to lead St Ignatius 7-3 at halftime, but Ignatius used a 6-1 run in the third quarter and outscored the Lions 10-2 in the second half to prevent the upset bid.

Both teams were even after one quarter of play, with no one seeming to have a definite advantage. Kennelly started the scoring with a backhand from two meters out to give Ignatius a 1-0 lead, but her breakaway attempt hit the crossbar to prevent a another goal. Ashley Rivard found the back of the net from outside seven meters to tie the score at 1-1 on St Viator's next possession. Lions' goalie Claire Kelly denied Kaulus' open shot from the right wing, and Samantha Belbin gave Viator their first lead with a goal to make the score 2-1. Kennelly scored her second goal from two meters out to tie the game, but Sarah Ostling took a pass from Rivard at two meters and scored to make the score 3-2 late in the first period. Kaitlyn Kedzior found the corner of the net after a pass from Kennelly to tie the score at 3-3 at the end of the opening frame.

The Lions owned the second quarter, as Rivard scored her second goal from the point to put Viator back ahead 4-3. Kennelly missed on a shot from seven meters, and Megan Barry gave the Lions a two goal lead with a powerplay goal from five meters out. Rivard scored for the third time in the first half from the left side, and Barry recorded her second goal on a powerplay to give St Viator a 7-3 lead. The Lions had a chance to extend their lead on a last minute powerplay, but Sarah Hlavin's shot from the left wing hit the post.

Trailing 7-3 at halftime, Ignatius went on a 6-1 run to take a 9-8 lead into the final quarter. Messerle tallied a breakaway goal off an assist from goalie Megan Hybinette to start the run, and Hybinette scored a goal from the crease in the shallow end with a pool-length heave that trickled across the left goalline to cut the lead to 7-5. On their next possession, Kennelly stole the ball away from Kelly and pushed it into the goal to cut the deficit to one, and Kennelly scored a left-handed goal on a breakaway to tie the game at 7-7.

Her steal on Viators' next play led to an ejection and an assist on the go-ahead goal by Kaulus from the right wing, but the Lions' scored on a powerplay to make the score 8-8 as Barry's shot from the point was deflected into the net. With 1:18 remaining in the the third, Messerle drew a four meter and Kennelly slammed the penalty shot into the right side of the net to give St Ignatius a 9-8 lead.

The teams traded goals early in the fourth period, with St Ignatius maintaining a one goal lead with 3:30 left to play. Viator had a chance to tie the score on a powerplay, but Sara Hlavin's shot from the left wing bounced off the post and was saved by goalie Kirby Joslyn. A minute later, Nora Kennelly made a steal and assisted Meredith Messerle on a goal that put Ignatius ahead 11-9. Kennelly then found Kristen Kaulus on the right wing for another score, and Kennelly added a breakaway goal in the final minute to wrap up a 13-9 win for St Ignatius.

Kennelly lead all scorers with seven tallies, Kaulus and Messerle each had two goals, and Kedzior and Hybinnette each added one goal. Megan Barry recorded four goals for the Lions, Rivard added three, Ostling had two, and Samantha Belbin chipped in with one goal.
