FENWICK TOURNAMENT RECAPS -
CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND-Saturday Neuqua Valley 10 New Trier 4 Neuqua Valley earned tenth place in the tournament with a 10-4 win over New Trier in the final game for both teams. The Wildcats led 4-0 after the first quarter, getting goals from four different scorers to take the early lead. They increased the lead to 6-1 by halftime, and the Trevians could only get to within four in the second half. Kaylin Young scored three times for Neuqua, and Kristen Imburgia and Danielle Urban each scored twice in the win. Amanda Adducci, Deni Stritch, and Laura Miller all added one goal each for the Wildcats. New Trier was led by Bethany Teska's two goals, and Eliza McKay and Caroline Snabes both scored once for the Trevians. - Oak Park 14 Lyons Township 6 Oak Park earned a ninth place tournament finish with a convincing 14-6 win over Lyons Township. Kendra Betka scored eight goals and Lauren Daggett added six scores as the tandem provided Oak Park with all of its' offense. Lauren Burel (2 goals), Lauren Ansilio (2 goals), Sarah Trilla, and Kathleen Imhoff each scored in the loss for Lyons. - Rockford (MI) 7 Evanston 4 Evanston took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Maggie Hatcher, but Rockford took the lead on three powerplay goals after questionable ejections late in the first period. Rockford made it 4-1 on yet another powerplay goal to start the second quarter, but Hatcher cut that lead in half with her second goal of the game to make it 4-2 before the break. Rockford scored three times in the third period, with two of them coming after ejections to extend their lead to 7-2. Evanston fought back, as Anna Ditton scored on a breakaway before the third quarter ended, then added a four meter penalty shot to make it 7-4 late in the game. That was all they had left in the tank, as Rockford moved on to the fifth place game while Evanston clinched seventh place after their final game of the tournament. - Sandburg 8 Grand Rapids (MI) 2 Sandburg dominated on defense, and Alicia Christensen held Grand Rapids to only two goals as the Eagles advanced to the fifth place game with an 8-2 win. Beth Haynes continued to have a solid tournament, scoring five goals, while Mandy Nawojski, Nicole Srutowski, and Amanda Schilling each added a goal for Sandburg. The Eagles held a 3-0 advantage after the first quarter, and pushed the lead up to 6-2 by halftime and never looked back. Grand Rapids ended up finishing in eighth place in the tournament. - Fenwick 10 Stevenson 3 Stevenson made things difficult for Fenwick early, controlling the pace of the game by utilizing most of their shot clock. But Fenwick erupted in the second half for six goals en route to a 10-3 victory that moved them to the championship game. The game was scoreless after one period, but Mary McCarthy scored on a lob shot to make it 1-0 for Fenwick. Keely Wimer scored nine seconds later to tie the game at 1-1, and her lob shot from two meters gave the Patriots their first lead at 2-2 with 3:31 left in the half. Emily Bonk and Keely Baldwin helped put the Friars ahead by each scoring on powerplay opportunities late in the half. Farren Rixter gave Fenwick a 4-2 halftime lead with a goal from two meters, and Stevenson missed a chance to score on a powerplay at the end of the half. It was all Fenwick in the second half, as they limited the opportunities on offense for Stevenson, while Alison Pavlik poured in four goals to help put the game away for the Friars. Rixter and Jenna Byrne also added second half goals for Fenwick, while Katie Michelau scored once for Stevenson. - Mother McAuley 14 Mundelein 10 Mundelein gave Mother McAuley all it could handle, but in the end the Mighty Macs had too much firepower and emerged with a 14-10 victory that sent them to the championship game. Maggie Coghlan scored four goals, while Sandra Perez and Megan O'Connell scored three times for McAuley. Bianca Cabrera added two goals and Jennifer Valazquez and Emily Ginger each had one score for the Macs. Mundelein's Maggie Gates provided the offense with six goals, while Jordan Jaeckel added two scores and Erika Garza and Callie Andrysiak each scored once for the Mustangs. Mundelein moved on to the third place game to take on Stevenson later in the evening. - Rockford (MI) 9 Sandburg 5 (5th) Rockford jumped out to early 2-0 lead in the first quarter, and extended the advantage to 5-2 by halftime. Alicia Christensen kept Sandburg in the game with solid goaltending, and Beth Haynes and Sam Cody scored in the second period to keep the Eagles close. In the third, Sandburg cut the lead to 5-4 when Haynes scored a goal from two meters and Amanda Schilling added her first goal. Rockford responded with a quick goal and added three more scores in the fourth period, while Sandburg was only able to get one more goal from Nicole Srutowski to make the final score 9-5. Rockford earned a fifth place finish while the Eagles finished the tournament in sixth place. - Mundelein 11 Stevenson 9 (3rd) Stevenson was playing without Keely Wimer in the final game, and Mundelein looked to take advantage of that early. The Mustangs scored seven first quarter goals to lead 7-1. Stevenson held Mundelein scoreless in the second period while adding two goals to make it 7-3 at halftime. The Patriots got even closer in the third period, cutting the lead down to 8-6. But Mundelein had too much offense at the end, coming away with an 11-9 win. Maggie Gates led the Mustangs with five goals and Jordan Jaekel had three scores. Stevenson was led by Terri Bukofzer's five goals, while four other players scored one goal each.
