Coach of the Year
BOYS
Kyle Perry (Fenwick)
The Friars faced a variety of roadblocks in their journey to reclaiming
the state title in 2013. Fenwick won their own tournament by beating Lyons
in Week 2, but lost four regular season games once Matt Farmer was
sidelined for five weeks due to an injury. The team got a huge boost from
Perry's decision to turn to a sophomore class that included Andrew
Bertschy, Bailey Wendt, Danny Farmer, and Ryan Masi and nearly beat
Missouri's state champion (SLUH) in the title game of the DeSmet
Tournament in April. Even with Farmer's return at sectionals, Fenwick
still had to dethrone last year's state champions (Lyons) with their top
player just returning to the pool, yet Perry made sure they kept their
composure and everyone in the lineup was ready to contribute even when
opponents focused on shutting down Farmer.
Coach of the Year Runners-Up
Dan Hengelmann (Loyola)
The Ramblers lost their entire starting lineup from last year's
second-place finish at state, yet by the end of the 2013 they won the
Catholic League Tournament and nearly upset New Trier in the GBN Sectional
finals.
Chris Fetterman (Hoffman)
The Hawks came on strong when it mattered most in the
postseason, beating a Fremd team they lost to twice in the regular season
in the sectional semifinal round to make it to their first sectional
final. They kept things close with Conant until the latter stages of the
sectional finals and finished the season ranked #18, their best finish in
team history.
