Entry #8

This Summer's NFL Lockout Was Actually A Good Thing

Posted August 18, 2011, 1:10pm by Jamal Collier

Usually getting excited to see your favorite team play isn’t weird. But I find myself asking why am I excited to see my favorite team, the defending AFC Champion Pittsburgh Steelers, play the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night football. It’s the preseason.

I hate preseason football, and normally want the starters to get in and get out avoiding any possible injuries. The last thing I want is for one of the starters to get hurt in this meaningless game. And even after our starting cornerback Ike Taylor broke his hand last week, I was excited to read that the Steelers starters could play up to two quarters.

Maybe it’s because I’ve been waiting for something to save me from my pitiful baseball team (the Chicago Cubs).

Maybe it’s because I want to get rid of the bad taste that Aaron Rodgers gave me after the Super Bowl.

Or maybe it’s because someone very educated in control of the NFL decided to plant in my mind the fact that there may not be a football season this year. Or that this summer’s lockout could result in actually having a shortened football season.

And then in the eleventh hour the owners and players agree to a new labor agreement and football is saved.
Hmm...just in time for me to pour more money into the NFL; I’ve already ordered some merchandise off the Steelers online web site. Just in time for me to do my part to make sure the NFL ratings are still doing well, because I’ve been watching games in August the same way I did last January. But everyone I know is more excited for football and their fantasy drafts than they ever have before.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder; but then again, we really didn’t miss anything.

Yeah I guess they missed some of those mini-camps I would not have paid attention to anyways. And free agency was shortened, but the Steelers never sign any big name free agents so I don’t care about that either. The last time I think I cared to watch a minute of preseason football was 2004, when I wanted to see what this new quarterback, Ben Rothel-something?, could do (even though I thought we were fine with Tommy Maddox).

This year I’ve watched extended time in the Chargers-Seahawks, Bears-Bills and Jets-Texans preseason games. If you would’ve told me that a year ago, I would’ve tried to take some of your money.

I’m even going to Buffalo Wild Wings tonight to watch the game (Philadelphia at Pittsburg), at least for a half. As of Thursday, there's only 24 days until the regular season...but who’s counting?

Whoever came up with this lockout idea...good job. You've got me more hooked than ever.
