Don't Mess With Bert & Ernie!

Posted August 12, 2011, 11:55am by Aaron Brown

Bert and Ernie are pissed. And rightly so. Just look at that picture of them to the left.

Here's why: recently, some idiot decided to create an online petition that stated the two characters were gay and that they should get married on the show. More idiots decided to jump on it and petitions and Facebook pages were created and the news got into the mainstream. Madness!

Back in the late 1960's, Sesame Street creator Jim Henson included Bert & Ernie in the pilot episode of the show and they have been prominent on the show for over 40 years. Henson performed the character of Ernie while good friend Frank Oz (voice of Yoda and several other characters including Animal, Fozzie Bear, and Miss Piggy and film director) performed the character of Bert. The pairing was meant to be similar to the friendship that Henson and Oz shared. Friendship! That's it.

Bert and Ernie shared an apartment in Sesame Street. They had separate beds in the same room, much like you see on such cherished shows like Jersey Shore and The Real World these days. I'm not sure why something as common as that should create such rumors, but what a terrible lesson to teach society. Why is it so bad? Because it sends a message that two male friends who are close might have a "secret", as if it is such a bad thing. It makes a mockery of those males who have had to deal with false rumors like these because they are simply friends with another male, while also insulting actual gay men for the content of the rumor and the public reaction to it.

Additionally, the creator of Sesame Street has said they are not gay. Which means that's it. Why? Because they are fictitious characters and the creator said so! They were meant to teach children about the value of friendship, not be a platform for major societal issues just because adults want to skew things to fit their own agenda.

Stop trying to ruin great memories from the childhoods of many young people. Times were a lot more innocent then, and Henson and Oz clearly did not intend for people in 2011 to tarnish their work in this way. We are talking about two individuals who have been responsible for or involved in such great work as Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, The Muppet Show, Star Wars, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, and Little Shop of Horrors. Additionally, while there may be several lessons to teach young people as they grow up, I'm not sure that I want shows like Sesame Street, which is clearly aimed towards youths under 10 years old, to be teaching children anything beyond how to count and recite the alphabet.
