Game Preview - FACTS & STATS: Site: Stevenson High School -- Lincolnshire, Illinois. 2005 Series Record: Brother Rice, 4-2. GAME NOTES: The Crusaders won the first four meetings between these two teams this year, and they will be looking for the same result in the state quarterfinal matchup. Nick Velasquez is a playmaker for Brother Rice who makes things happen on both offense and defense and can strike from anywhere in the pool. Offensively, the Crusaders rely heavily on two-meter star Mark DiCola, who has had strong performances against the Friars earlier this season. Omar Vasquez and Fernando Chavez-Cedeno can cause problems for even the best offensive players, and the two are always a threat to score for Brother Rice as well. Kevin McShane has continued to improve all year and can shoot well from the outside, while the emergence of Sean Coghlan in his sophomore campaign has made the Brother Rice lineup strong from top-to-bottom. The addition of Terry Moran to the lineup has been a big factor in the Crusaders 29-2 record this season. Goalie Joe Frantz has been one of the best goalies in the state in 2005, and he could help lift the Crusaders to a state title if he continues to play as well as he has. Fenwick has knocked off Brother Rice in their last two meetings; one was a victory at the Stevenson Tournament and the most recent win clinched the MCAC Championships for the Friars. They are led by two vastly talented seniors, Mark Melnyk and Oscar Calderon, who do just about everything for Fenwick. Goalie Chris Jones has been stellar in the net, especially in the second half of the season, and he could make a major difference in Fenwick's drive for a second straight state title. The sophomore trio of Luke Baldwin, Tom Parolin, and John Barrett are extremely talented and are also very versatile players who can score, play defense, and create opportunities for other players on the team. Whether they start or come off the bench, seniors Paul Grusecki and Jack Ryden provide valuable minutes for the Friars, who field such a strong lineup in the pool at all times that they do not allow defenses to focus on any one particular player. Not much separates these two teams other than who is playing their best at the right time. With the winner of this game heavily favored to win the state title and both teams coming into the game fresh, expect to see a battle that comes down to one or two critical plays in the final quarter that decide the game. Who will make those plays...find out at 8:15pm on Thursday night. Illpolo.com Predicted Outcome: TOO CLOSE TO CALL - I recommend you pay the $8 to see this game and make your own predictions. |
