The Caravan earned their second win of the season, beating Argo 15-9 in the
preliminary round of the Stagg Sectional. Argo finished the 2012 season
without a win.
Wednesday, May 9
Quarterfinals
Sandburg 19 Mt
Carmel 2
Mike Malecki allowed just 2 goals as Sandburg got past Mt Carmel 19-2 on
Wednesday.
St Rita 22
Lindblom 13
Mike Hernandez recorded 6 goals as St Rita topped Lindblom 22-13 in the
quarterfinal round.
Brother Rice 19
Shepard 3
Mike Mulcrone netted 6 goals and both Dan Birmingham and Mitch Strahlman
tallied 3 scores as Brother Rice defeated Shepard 19-3. Dave Jackson, Kevin
Mayer, and Ian Disteldorf each notched 6 scores in the winning effort, while
goalie Nate Mrozek stopped 6 shots for the Crusaders.

Friday, May 11
Semifinals
Sandburg 18 St
Rita 2
For the second straight game, Sandburg goalie Mike Malecki allowed just 2
goals to help the Eagles beat St Rita 18-2. Matt Veldman racked up 4 goals,
while Kevin Tunney and Zach Roper each chipped in with 3 scores in the
winning effort. John Murphy and Mike Hernandez each scored once in the loss
for St Rita.
Stagg 11 Brother Rice 9
Juan Valdez scored 4 goals and Nate Schaub added 3 scores as the Chargers
upset Brother Rice 11-9 on Friday night. Ryan Petersen also scored 2 times
and Jihad Ramadan saved 10 shots for the victors. Kevin Mayer scored 4 times
and Mike Mulcrone netted 3 scores in the losing effort for the Crusaders.
The hosts held a 10-7 lead heading into the final period, but Rice was able
to trim the lead to one midway through the period. Schaub responded with a
late goal for Stagg, who held on to secure a spot in the sectional finals.
Saturday, May 12
Finals
(1) Sandburg 11 (2) Stagg 10
Sandburg put together a dramatic 4-0 run in the final quarter to grab an
11-10 come-from-behind win over Stagg. Trailing 9-7, Stephen Zieler and Matt
Veldman each scored successive goals to tie the game with three minutes left
in regulation. Anthony Bonnar put the Eagles ahead 10-7 and Veldman added an
insurance goal at the 1:35 mark to put Sandburg ahead 11-9. The Chargers
scored a late goal to cut the lead to one, but the Eagles were able to run
the clock out and advance to the state tournament for the fourth time in
five years. Veldman led Sandburg with 3 goals, while Bonnar, Zieler, Kevin
Tunney, and Mike O'Malley each netted 2 scores in the winning effort. Ryan
Peterson and Juan Valdez combined to score 7 goals and Jihad Ramadan made 11
saves in the loss for the Chargers.
