Semifinals

(1) Homewood-Flossmoor 5 (5) Lincoln-Way East 4

In a hardcore defensive battle, the Griffins and Vikings ended the first period with no score. Julie Warren opened the scoring for LWE midway through the second period, and the Griffins continued to shutout H-F after fourteen minutes of play. Rebecca Mathews tied the score for the Vikings early in the third period, then she connected on a penalty shot to give H-F their first lead at 2-1. Before the quarter ended, Mary Reilly of LWE evened the score at 2-2 with a goal, and the teams headed into the final period of regulation with the game hanging in the balance.

Rebecca Mathews put the Vikings ahead once again, scoring on a breakaway goal early in the final period, and H-F clinged to a 3-2 lead for much of the fourth quarter. But Alyssa Toland notched her first goal in the final minute of regulation and the teams were tied again at 3-3 with 0:40 left to play. After a stop, the Griffins drew an ejection and Warren scored her second goal with 0:16 left on the clock and LWE held a 4-3 lead with one possession left in the game.

Hannah Ongman tied the game at 4-4 on what seemed like the Vikings' last possession of regulation. But in the final seconds, East attempted a game-winning shot that sailed over the goal, and the Vikings' called a timeout to setup a final play. H-F goalie Sophie Schloen then found Ongman open at half tank after play resumed, and her last second shot at the buzzer went into the corner of the net to send Homewood-Flossmoor to the sectional finals with a 5-4 win.

(3) Lincoln-Way Central 8 (2) Bremen 5

LWC outscored Bremen 6-1 in the second half after a nervous start to earn an 8-5 win and advance to the sectional finals against Homewood-Flossmoor on Saturday. Danijela Jackovich scored 4 goals and Jamie Graf scored 2 key fourth quarter goals to put the game away for the Knights. Cassie Jo Miller scored 2 times to lead the Bremen offensive attack.

In the opening quarter, Bremen jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind goals from Nora Plank, Emma Martinus, and Catherine Vivado. But Jackovich scored 2 straight goals for the Knights to get the score to 3-2 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter,  Miller scored her first goal after an ejection and the Bremen defense did not allow a goal to take a 4-2 lead into halftime.

Jackovich scored her third goal to open the second half, getting the Knights to within a goal. Markie Kulovitz followed that effort with a goal off a pass from goaltender Kelsey Martiniak (15 saves), and the two teams were knotted up at 4-4 early in the third period. Miller helped Bremen bounce back with a goal midway through the period as they reclaimed a 5-4 advantage.

In the fourth quarter, Jackovich netted her fourth goal of the contest to tie the score at 5-5 with five minutes remaining. Then, midway through the period, Jess Graf notched her first goal of the game and gave the Knights their first lead. Jamie Graf continued the LWC surge with a goal with under three minutes to play, and the Knights had built  a 7-5 lead over Bremen. Jamie Graf scored her second straight goal of the fourth quarter to give LWC an 8-5 lead as their 4-0 run put them in the driver's seat with two minutes remaining. The Knights were able to shutdown Bremen's offensive attack in the final minutes as they went on to win 8-5 with a dominant second half performance.

Finals

(1) Homewood-Flossmoor 7 (3) Lincoln-Way Central 4

After two scoreless minutes, H-F's Michelle Mayer opened the scoring with a goal to put the Vikings ahead 1-0. Markie Kulovitz tied the game with a goal after a Vikings' ejection and the score was tied at 1-1 late in the period. In the final minute of the period, Rebecca Mathews put the Vikings on top 2-1 with her first goal, and we headed into the second quarter with H-F clinging to a one goal lead.

Mayer scored a backhand goal from two meters to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead, then Hannah Ongman scored with two minutes left in the half and H-F had a 4-1 lead over LWC. Mayer scored her second goal of the period for the Vikings, then Mathews added her second score with under two minutes left in the half. Jess Graf got a goal back for the Knights, scoring with 0:15 seconds left in the second period, but H-F took a 6-2 lead into halftime.

Both defenses held firm in the third quarter, so neither team added to their tally and we headed to the final quarter with H-F leading 6-2. LWC's Morgan Graves put the Knights within striking distance with a goal at the 5:40 mark of the final period, cutting the H-F lead to 6-3. Mayer responded for the Vikings, scoring for the third time to increase the advantage to 7-3. The Knights added a late goal from Kulovitz after earning an ejection to cut the lead to 7-4, but H-F held on to emerge with the win and a berth at the state tournament next weekend.
