Fenwick Tournament Recap

Saturday, March 29

Fenwick beat Mother McAuley 9-8 in the final game of the Mike Murphy Tournament and also beat St Ignatius 12-4 to win the Mike Murphy Tournament over the weekend. Morgan Bonk scored 18 goals and Lisett Calderon added 15 scores to lead the Friars to a 4-0 record over the weekend. McAuley and Ignatius both finished 3-1.

 

ST IGNATIUS 12 NEUQUA VALLEY 6

Celeste Almarez scored 6 goals and Tracy Karpinski and Lydia Ridgeway added 2 goals apiece to lead the Wolfpack to the win. Chelsea Reczek and Jeanette Nolte both scored 2 times for the Wildcats in the loss.

 

SANDBURG 11 EVANSTON 5

Alyssa Turza recorded 6 goals and Alex Morales and Jessica Jenkot each scored 2 goals as Sandburg defeated Evanston 11-5. Rachel Hudgens scored 3 goals and Lily Nassiri added 2 scores in the loss for the Wildkits.

 

MOTHER MCAULEY 12 MUNDELEIN 9

Yuri Chavez tallied 5 goals and Emily Ryan scored twice to lead the Mighty Macs to a 12-9 victory over Mundelein. Kristen Aucutt, Evelyn Kurzac, and Alexis Jones each scored twice in the loss for the Mustangs.

 

LOYOLA 11 HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR 9

Liz Clarke scored 7 goals and Maeve O'Connor totaled 4 scores to lead the Ramblers to an 11-9 win over H-F. Andrea Peterson scored 5 goals to lead the Vikings.

 

ST IGNATIUS 19 EVANSTON 8

Celeste Almarez recorded 4 goals, Mary Cate Devitt scored 3 times, and Lydia Ridgeway, Yvette Leon, Alma Juarez, and Moira McCarthy each tallied 2 scores apiece to help the Wolfpack beat Evanston 19-8. Rachel Hudgens scored 4 goals in the loss for the Wildkits.

 

SANDBURG 10 NEUQUA VALLEY 5

Alex Bielski, Pam Dettman, and Jessica Jenkot each recorded 2 goals to lead the Eagles to a 10-5 victory over Neuqua Valley.

 

LOYOLA 13 MUNDELEIN 6

Liz Clarke scored 5 goals, Maeve O'Connor tallied 4 goals, and Ashley Letrich added 2 scores as Loyola beat Mundelein 13-6. Alice Denny scored 3 goals in the loss for the Mustangs.

 

MOTHER MCAULEY 12 HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR 6

Laura Perez scored 4 goals and Yuri Chavez added 2 scores to lead Mother McAuley to a 12-6 win over Homewood-Flossmoor. Andrea Peterson and Caitlin Dunn scored twice in the loss for the Vikings.

 

FENWICK 12 ST IGNATIUS 4

Morgan Bonk scored 6 goals and Lisett Calderon added 3 scores to lead Fenwick to a 12-4 win over St Ignatius in the first-place bracket of the tournament. The Wolfpack kept the score close in the first period, but the Friars put together a 5-0 run during the second and third quarters to pull away for the win. Mariclaire Bresnahan recorded 13 saves in the win

 

In the first quarter, St Ignatius' Maisie O'Malley scored after an ejection to cut the Fenwick lead to 3-2. Bonk responded with a goal at 2-meters early in the second period, then Katie Tynan scored with 0:33 seconds left in the period. Fenwick went ahead 6-2 after Stephanie Ovalle made a steal at 2-meters and assisted a driving Calderon on a goal with just :09 seconds remaining in the first half.

 

The Friars continued their run at the start of the second half, as Ovalle assisted Tynan on her second goal and then made a steal at 2-meters, passed back to Bresnahan, who found Bonk open for a breakaway goal and an 8-2 lead. O'Malley tallied her second goal of the game late in the third period, but Bresnahan made 4 straight saves and Ovalle added a goal to give Fenwick a 9-3 advantage. In the final minute of the period, the Wolfpack's Yvette Leon scored on a lob shot from the left side to cut the lead to 9-4 with one period remaining.

 

Bonk scored all 3 Fenwick goals in the fourth quarter, including a left-handed shot after a drive towards the left post. She finished the game with 6 goals, Calderon scored 3 times, and Tynan had 2 goals for the Friars. O'Malley led the Wolfpack with 2 goals, while Lydia Ridgeway and Leon also added one goal in the loss for St Ignatius.

 

STEVENSON 7 LOYOLA 6

Rebecca Shopiro and Katie Moy each scored 3 goals to lead the Patriots to a 7-6 win over Loyola. Maeve O'Connor scored 4 goals to get the Ramblers within one late in the game, but Stevenson held on for the one-goal win.

 

HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR 8 NEW TRIER 8

Andrea Peterson capped a 3-0 run by driving and scoring with :30 seconds remaining to help Homewood-Flossmoor finish in an 8-8 tie with New Trier. Peterson and Story Pumphrey each scored 3 goals for H-F, while Sophia Palmer scored 3 goals and Mandy Ferguson and Kate Hilbrant each tallied 2 goals for the Trevians.

 

MUNDELEIN 9 EVANSTON 8

Kristen Aucutt scored 4 straight goals in the second half, including the game-winner with :03 seconds remaining to give Mundelein a 9-8 win over Evanston. Aucutt finished with 5 goals in the game, while Alice Denny and Evelyn Kurzac each added 2 scores for the Mustangs. Rachel Hudgens and Lily Nassiro each totaled 3 goals in the loss for the Wildkits.

 

NEW TRIER 12 NEUQUA VALLEY 12

Neuqua Valley cored 3 goals in the final minute, including the game-tying goal by Jenn Rinehart as time expired, to help Neuqua Valley tie New Trier in a 12-12 battle on Saturday night. The Trevians broke an 8-8 tie in the fourth quarter after counsecutive goals by Sophia Palmer, Ryanne O'Donnell, and Mandy Ferguson, but Rinehart stopped the run midway through the final period to cut the lead to 11-9. After Ferguson added her fourth goal of the game, Chelsea Reczek scored 2 goals in the final minute to narrow the gap to 12-11, then Rinehart made a steal in waning seconds and scored right before the buzzer sounded to end the game in a tie. Reczek scored 5 goals, Jeanette Nolte added 4 scores, and Rinehart finished with 3 goals for the Wildcats, while Ferguson and Hilbrant each tallied 4 goals and Ryanne O'Donnell scored 3 goals for New Trier.

 

SANDBURG 9 STEVENSON 8

Sandburg and Stevenson traded leads throughout their matchup on Saturday night before the Eagles' Kelly Kuchta scored the game-winning goal with :54 seconds left to give Sandburg a 9-8 win over Stevenson. Patriots' goalie Janelle Bartman made a save as the shot clock expired with just under one-minute to play, but Kuchta was driving towards the left post and scored a rebound goal to propel the Eagles to the win. Stevenson had a chance to tie after a steal in the last ten seconds, but Kuchta and Jessica Jenkot teamed up to force a turnover and clinch the win for Sandburg.

 

Earlier in the game, Stevenson took a 5-3 lead after Rebecca Shopiro drew an ejection and Megan Mitchell scored moments later. Sandburg's Pam Dettman scored two straight goals later in the second period to tie the game, then Alyssa Turza scored from 2-meters out with just :04 seconds remaining in the half to put the Eagles ahead 6-5. Bartmann made a key save midway through the third period on a penalty shot, then Kelly Lowry scored the equalizer later in the period to make the score 6-6. Alex Bielski and Amy Michelau traded goals early in the final period, then Sandburg reclaimed the lead when Dettman took a pass from the left post from Jenkot to score and give the Eagles an 8-7 lead with 3:25 left to play. Michelau tied the score with a goal from 5-meters out with 2:09 remaining in the game, but Kuchta scored the eventual game-winner for the Eagles in the final minute.

 

Turza led the Eagles with 4 goals, while Dettman added 3 scores in the win. Michelau recorded 3 goals for Stevenson, while Shopiro and Lowry both scored 2 times for the Patriots in the loss.

 

FENWICK 9 MOTHER MCAULEY 8

Lisett Calderon got the Friars on the board first with a goal from the 5-meter mark in the opening minute of the game. She then assisted Bonk on a drive to 2-meters as Fenwick claimed an early 2-0 advantage. Meghan Nolan answered back for the Macs with a goal from the right side after a Fenwick ejection, but the Friars' Katie Tynan put Fenwick ahead 3-1 moments later with an outside shot after a McAuley ejection to make the score 3-1. Yuri Chavez scored on two consecutive backhand shots from 2-meters out to tie the score at 3-3 in the final minute of the period, and Bonk fired over the net on Fenwick's last chance of the opening quarter.

 

Fenwick goalie Mariclaire Bresnahan made a key save in the opening minute of the second quarter, which led to Tynan drawing a penalty shot that Calderon scored on to give Fenwick a 4-3 lead. McAuley goaltender Genesis Romo made two straight saves on shots by Emma McKernin and Wella Huening, but Bonk drew an ejection with under three minutes left in the half and Tynan scored again from 7-meters out to give the Friars a 5-3 advantage. Laura Perez answered for McAuley, as she connected on a shot from 7-meters out to cut the lead down to 5-4. In the final minute of the half, Romo and Bresnahan traded saves as Fenwick held on to a one-goal advantage at the break.

 

Things went back and forth in the third quarter, with Fenwick scoring first after Stephanie Ovalle made a steal and assisted on Bonk's lob shot from the left side at the 4:36 mark of the period. McAuley's Lilly Cortez responded with a goal from 7-meters on the left side, and Maggie McShane kept the Macs close with a field block after Fenwick had drawn an ejection. Bresnahan made a save and assisted on a counterattack goal by Calderon to put Fenwick on top 7-5, but Mcauley's Molly O'Connell scored on the next possession for the Macs to cut the lead to 7-6. Calderon added a goal from 7-meters after a McAuley ejection, but Perez tallied her second goal in the final minute of the quarter with a shot from the left side to make the score 8-7 with one period left to play.

 

Fenwick scored first in the fourth quarter, as Ovalle assisted Bonk on a shot from the left post to give the Friars a 9-7 lead with 5:38 remaining. Both teams missed on solid scoring opportunities, as O'Connell and Bonk both hit the post on shots midway through the period. Chavez got McAuley back within one after driving with the ball and scoring from the right corner at the 2:27 mark, making the score 9-8 in favor of Fenwick. Chavez drew an ejection on McAuley's next possession, but Bresnahan made a crucial save to keep Fenwick on top. Ovalle hit the post on Fenwick's next possession, and McAuley drew an ejection in the final minute to give them a chance to tie the score. Ovalle and Bresnahan teamed up to cause a turnover on McAuley's last possession, and Fenwick ran out the clock to earn the 9-8 victory.

 

Friday, March 28

Fenwick, Mother McAuley, and St Ignatius each won their opening round games on Friday afternoon at the Fenwick Tournament. The Friars knocked off Stevenson 14-6, as Morgan Bonk scored 6 goals to lead the Friars to the win. In the second game, Mother McAuley used an 8-0 run in the second and third quarters to pull away from Loyola en route to a 12-6 victory. Then, Lydia Ridgeway scored from outside 9-meters with 0:17 seconds left to give St Ignatius a 12-11 win over Sandburg. In the late games, Stevenson topped New Trier 11-7, Neuqua surprised Evanston 11-4, H-F defeated Mundelein 12-7, and Fenwick closed out the night with a 14-9 win over New Trier.

FENWICK 14 STEVENSON 6

Lisett Calderon and Morgan Bonk each scored 4 goals and Emma McKernin added 3 scores to lead Fenwick to a 14-6  tournament-opening win over Stevenson on Friday night. Rebecca Shopiro and Amy Michelau each tallied 2 goals for the Patriots in the loss.

 

MCAULEY 12 LOYOLA 6

Yuri Chavez scored 4 goals and Meghan Nolan and Maggie McShane each scored 2 times to lead Mother McAuley to a 12-6 victory over Loyola on Friday night.

 

After four minutes of scoreless play, Mother McAuley's Laura Perez scored from the left post just outside of 2-meters to give the Macs a 1-0 lead, but Loyola's Liz Clarke put back a rebound off a shot off the crossbar from teammate Maeve O'Connor to even the score at 1-1 with 1:34 left in the first quarter. At that point, McAuley scored the game's next eight goals, including a rebound goal by Lilly Cortez in the second quarter and two goals from 2-meters by Chavez and a lob shot and a breakaway score by McShane in the third period. Clarke broke the scoring drought for the Ramblers by drawing an ejection and scoring off a pass from O'Connor late in the third quarter, then O'Connell added a goal one minute later to cut the Macs' lead down to 9-3. Clarke added a breakaway goal in the final minute of the third period to make the score 9-4, but Nolan put McAuley ahead 10-4 midway through the fourth quarter and Chavez added a breakaway goal with 3:29 left in the game. O'Connor added two late goals for Loyola, but Chavez scored from 2-meters to put the game away and give Mother McAuley a 12-6 win.

 

ST IGNATIUS 12 SANDBURG 11

Lydia Ridgeway scored the game-winning goal from 9-meters out with 0:17 seconds remaining and totaled 5 goals to lead the Wolfpack to a 12-11 win at the Fenwick Tournament on Friday. Celeste Almarez and Yvette Leon each scored 3 goals in the win for Ignatius, while Alyssa Turza led Sandburg with 5 goals in the loss.

 

Sandburg started the game with two straight goals, as Alyssa Turza put back a rebound off a shot that hit the post by teammate Jessica Jenkot, then scored from 2-meters out moments later. Ridgeway connected on a lob shot from the left side of the pool, but Turza made a steal and scored at the 4:00 mark to make the score 3-1 in favor of Sandburg. Leon scored on a breakaway goal to narrow the gap to 3-2, then Ridgeway assisted Almarez on a goal from the left side to tie the score at 3-3 heading into the second quarter. After Sandburg goalie Stephanie Pouder made a remarkable save on a 7-meter shot, Leon scored on a right-side drive with an assist by Maisie O'Malley to put the Wolfpack ahead for the first time 4-3. Ridgeway then made steal and drew a penalty shot, which she connected on to put Ignatius ahead 5-3. She scored again from outside 5-meters with just over one minute to play in the first half, but Sandburg's Pam Dettman scores from 2-meters with 0:18 left in the first half to cut the score to 6-4.

 

Pouder recorded two quick saves in the third quarter for Sandburg, but Ridgeway scored on a penalty shot midway through the period to put the Wolfpack up 7-4. The Eagles' Lori Dasher scored from outside 5-meters to make the score 7-5, but Almarez assisted Leon and Ridgeway and consecutive goals Alma Juarez a shot in from the left side to put Ignatius ahead 10-5 with 2:24 remaining in the third period.

 

Sandburg then went on a 5-0 run...Turza drew an ejection and Kelly Kuchta scored with 1:30 left in the third period to make the score 10-6...Alex Bielski scored after an ejection early in the final period...Kuchta drove and took a pass from Dasher to score and make the score 10-8...Bielski hit the post from the right side, but Turza pushed in the rebound with 5:11 left to cut the lead down to 10-9...Ignatius' goalie Elise O'Malley made a save on Jenkot's tip shot...Bielski passed ahead to Turza, who outfought O'Malley at 2m to score and tie the game at 10-10 with 3:03 remaining...

 

And here is the final three minutes in note form - Jenkot steal; Dasher hit the post; Ridgeway steal; Pouder save; Kuchta shot tipped out-of-bounds by O'Malley with 2:56 remaining; Almarez steal, pass ahead to Maisie O'Malley, who dishes back to Almarez for a goal from the right side just outside 7-meters to put Ignatius ahead 11-10 with 2:00 left to play; Kuchta draws an ejection for the Eagles, then Jenkot assists a wide-open Kuchta on a goal from inside 5-meters to tie the score at 11-11 with 0:32 seconds left in the game; Ridgeway gets possession on the left side with under 0:20 left to play and connects on a shot to the right side of the goal to give the Wolfpack a 12-11 lead with 0:17 seconds remaining...Sandburg turns the ball over on their next possession and St Ignatius runs out the clock and emerges with a 12-11 win.

 

STEVENSON 11 NEW TRIER 7

Amy Michelau scored 6 goals Rebecca Shopiro added 5 goals to lead Stevenson to an 11-7 win over New Trier. Ryanne O'Donnell recorded 4 goals in the loss for the Trevians.

 

NEUQUA VALLEY 11 EVANSTON 4

Chelsea Reczek and Jeanette Nolte each scored 3 goals to lead Neuqua to an 11-4 win over Evanston. Lily Nassiri tallied 3 goals to lead the Wildkits in the loss.

 

HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR 12 MUNDELEIN 7

Story Pumphrey scored 6 goals, Andrea Peterson added 2 scores, and Kiley Maanum tallied 2 goals to lead the Vikings to a 12-7 win over Mundelein. Alice Denny led the Mustangs with 3 goals in the losing effort.

 

FENWICK 14 NEW TRIER 9

Morgan Bonk tallied 5 goals, Lisett Calderon added 3 scores, and Stephanie Ovalle scored twice in Fenwick's 14-9 win in the late game at the Fenwick Tournament on Friday night. Mandy Ferguson and Kate Hilbrant each scored 3 goals and Ryanne O'Donnell had 2 goals for New Trier in the loss.
