week in water polo action in Illinois. This is not a complete list; the purpose is to recognize several
of the best performances from across the state that have been reported.

Biggest Impact Plays
BOYS
Sam Paloma (Niles West)
Paloma scored the game-winning goal with a quick shot from the left side
of the pool as the buzzer sounded as the Wolves stunned Fremd 11-10 on
Saturday.
Charlie Calvo/Cole Jacobs (Naperville North)
Jacobs scored from mid-pool in the final minute to get the Huskies within
one before Calvo drilled the game-tying shot at the buzzer as the Huskies
earned a dramatic 9-9 tie with New Trier.
Lucas Verelli (Evanston)
Verelli delivered the game-winner with two seconds left in overtime to
send Evanston past Wheeling 7-6 on Saturday.
Shane Hughes (St Ignatius)
Hughes scored with six seconds remaining to help lift the Wolfpack over
Loyola 11-10 at the Lyons Tournament.
GIRLS
Amy Rodriguez (Conant)
Rodriguez scored all three of her goals in overtime to help lead the
Cougars past Hersey 7-4 on Wednesday.
Tara White (St Ignatius)
White scored the game-winning goal to send the Wolfpack past Fenwick 8-7
in an MCAC thriller on Wednesday.
Top Goalie Performances
BOYS
Brian Johnson (Glenbrook South)
Johnson made 36 saves and helped the Titans finish 3-0 at their own
tournament after wins against Conant, HC and LWW. The goalkeeper allowed
just 5 goals per game at the event.
Nick Rosenberger (Lyons)
Rosenberger made 35 saves and dished out 6 assists as the Lions won their
own tournament with three straight wins over Loyola, St Ignatius and York.
His performance comes one week after he won four games and allowed 6 goals
per game as Lyons won the York Tournament.
Riley Byrne (Metea Valley)
Byrne blocked 22 shots to help the Mustangs fend off STC North 8-7 on
Wednesday, which puts him in a second-place tie for most saves in a single
game on the IHSA records list.
GIRLS
Abbey Hodges (Highland Park)
Hodges earned four wins and allowed four goals per game as the Lady Giants
won the Deerfield Tournament after beating Northside, Latin and Whitney
Young (twice).
Ellie Connors (Barrington)
Connors stopped 42 shots and helped the Fillies win their own event over
the weekend; Barrington also finished the week with a 6-0 mark.
Emma Jeronimus (Fremd)
Jeronimus made 79 saves during Week 5 to help Fremd win their own
tournament and finish the week with a 6-0 record.
Biggest Surprises
BOYS
St Patrick
The Shamrocks bounced back from a pair of losses last Saturday at their
own tournament by beating Fenwick 7-6 on Monday night. Joe Gibson (5
goals) and Eric Arroyo (16 saves) helped St Patrick earn the significant
win.
GIRLS
Bradley
The Boilers beat Palatine, Prospect and STC East to win the Maine East
Tournament on Saturday. They also earned wins over LWW and R-B during Week
5.
News and Notes
Season Passes Midpoint
Five weeks are now in the books as the regular season begins to head
towards the postseason. Four weeks of the regular season remain until the
sectional playoffs begin!
State Bracket Drawing
The IHSA utilized a random draw to determine the pairings for the state
tournament this May. Full details and the actual
2016 State Tournament Brackets should provide complete information.
