The following is a summary of what took place during the most recent week in water polo action in Illinois. This is not a complete list; the purpose is to recognize several of the best performances from across the state that have been reported.

Biggest Impact Plays

BOYS

Matt Hoban (Fenwick)

Hoban scored the game-winning goal in the closing stages of Fenwick's 12-11 victory over St Ignatius on Saturday.

 

Thomas Fies (Evanston)

Fies connected on the game-winning goal courtesy of a penalty shot in the final minute of Evanston's 8-7 win over Parkway Central.

 

GIRLS

Abbie Lukas (Mundelein)

Lukas scored the game-winner in the final minute of the Mustangs' 6-5 win over H-F at the Naperville Central Tourney on Saturday afternoon.

 

Carli York (York)

York scored the game-winning goal in sudden death overtime to send York past Saline 7-6 in the third-place game of the Naperville Central Tournament on Saturday.

 

Catie Wallace (Fenwick)

Wallace delivered the game-winning goal in sudden death overtime to lift the Friars over Mother McAuley 8-7 in a Monday night thriller in the Catholic League.

 

Emily Adelman (Lockport)

Adelman scored the game-winning goal with twenty seconds left in regulation to send the Porters past STC North 4-3 on Thursday night.

 

Jenny Stelnicki (St Ignatius)

Stelnicki blocked a breakaway attempt from point-blank range in the closing stages of the Wolfpack's 9-6 win over New Trier to send SICP to the title game of the Naperville Central Tournament.

 

Top Goalie Performances

BOYS

Brian Johnson (Glenbrook South)

For the second straight week, Johnson helped the Titans win a tournament, as the goalkeeper earned 5 wins and made 44 saves at the Evanston Tournament over the weekend.

 

Jake Burke (LWC)

Burke continued his strong showing in goal early in the 2016 campaign as the goalkeeper earned 4 wins, made 24 saves and dished out 7 assists in the Knights' tournament-winning performance at Lincoln-Way North.

 

Kent Emden (Naperville Central)

Shawn Shields (LWN)

Shields earned 4 wins, blocked 23 shots and allowed only 6 goals during his time in the net for the Phoenix as Lincoln-Way North went undefeated at their own tournament.

 

GIRLS

Jenny Stelnicki (St Ignatius)

Mariah Dicksen (Lockport)

Dicksen helped the Porters earn four wins during the week, stopping 63 shots and allowing only 12 goals in wins over Argo, Hinsdale South, Metea Valley and STC North.

 

Olivia Everhart (Evanston)

Everhart earned FOUR shutouts during Week 2 and totaled 44 saves as the Wildkits went 4-1 after wins over DLS, GBN, Waubonsie Valley and Whitney Young.

 

Biggest Surprises

BOYS

Lincoln-Way West

The Warriors earned victories over Lafayette, McHenry, Wheeling and Whitney Young en route to the Schaumburg Tournament title. West (6-0) have jumped out to their best start in team history and into the #18 spot in the latest rankings.

 

GIRLS

Highland Park

The Lady Giants improved to 7-0 and into the Top 25 after winning the Maine South Tournament over the weekend. The tournament winners beat Bradley, Libertyville, Maine East and STC East to win the event.

 

News and Notes

Spring Break/Easter Weekend

Spring Break has arrived for several schools and the Week 3 schedule will get lighter as the weekend approaches. Only one Varsity tournament is currently on the schedule for the upcoming weekend.

 

Sectional Hosts Pending

The IHSA has yet to announce the Sectional hosts for this year's postseason. Last year's announcement came on March 26, so we'll keep an eye out for this year's latest version all week long.
