Sectionals 2014
The following are a few of the players that came up big when it mattered most
for their teams during sectionals:
BOYS
Dan Birmingham (Brother Rice)
Birmingham drew a penalty and converted the shot to halt a 4-1 run by
Stagg that had allowed the Chargers to get within one goal of the
Crusaders. Brother Rice eventually emerged with a 12-10 victory and a
state tournament berth.
George Lundgren (Lyons)
Lundgren scored the eventual game-winning goal midway through the fourth
quarter of Lyons' 10-7 victory over Oak Park in the sectional semifinals
at LT.
Garrett Nash (Naperville North)
Nash scored two consecutive goals in the second quarter to help the
Huskies bounce back from an early 2-1 deficit to Naperville Central,
paving the way for North to earn a 9-6 win in the sectional finals at
Metea Valley.
Omar El Hoffi (Palatine)
El Hoffi's fourth quarter goal put a stop to Fremd's comeback attempt as
Palatine grabbed a 12-10 lead midway through the final period and did not
allow another goal in their sectional title-winning performance.
Wil Hubert (York)
Hubert recorded the game-winning goal with :19 remaining in overtime as
York stunned STC North 10-9 to advance to the sectional semifinal round at
Metea Valley.
Zach Roper (Sandburg)
Roper scored 2 times in the final two minutes to help the Eagles hold off
Andrew 12-10 and advance to the state tournament.
Anna Ward (Mundelein)
Ward blocked a close-range shot in the final minute of the Mustangs'
one-goal victory over Wheeling on Friday night.
Frankie Delleman (Lyons)
Delleman notched the game-winner with :51 left in regulation to lift the
Lions over Oak Park 7-6 in the semifinals of the LT Sectional.
Kristen Anderson (Palatine)
Anderson recorded the game-winning goal in sudden death overtime to send
the Pirates past rivak Fremd 10-9 in the semifinal round of the Palatine
Sectional.
Kate MacDuff (Naperville North)
The Huskies' goalie delivered the game-winner from her own end in the
closing seconds of the North's 9-8 victory over Naperville Central in the
sectional finals at Metea Valley.
Katie Difiglio (STC North)
Difiglio registered the game-winning goal with six seconds remaining to
help the North Stars get past Hinsdale Central 13-12 on Thursday in the
sectional quarterfinals.
Keelin Frank (New Trier)
Frank blocked a penalty shot in the second half that allowed New Trier to
hold off Loyola 7-6 in the sectional final at GBS.
Rachel Chumbook (Palatine)
Chumbook notched the game-winning goal in Palatine's 9-6 win over Conant
in the sectional finals, sending the Pirates to the state tournament for
the first time.
