THE ILLPOLO REPORT

Week 9

The following is a summary of what took place during the ninth week of the season. This is not a complete list and we can only include a few people in this summary, but the purpose is to recognize a few of the best performances from each week.

Players To Watch

BOYS

Drake McClure (Naperville North)

Makai DeNeve-Arnam (Maine South)

GIRLS

Charlotte Rosenberg (Latin)

Tyler Gooding (Maine South)

For a complete description, see Players to Watch: Volume IX

Biggest Impact Plays

BOYS

Joey Chokran/Ryan Hamilton (STC North)

Hamilton drew a penalty in the closing seconds of the final period that Chokran converted to send the North Stars to overtime with Barrington, where they earned a 12-10 win.

Viken Huening (Fenwick)

Huening scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of Fenwick's 9-8 victory over Loyola in the Catholic League title game.

GIRLS

Andie Cobb (Conant)

Cobb scored the game-winner in overtime as Conant stunned Prospect for fifth place in the MSL on Tuesday.

Cami Haas (Stevenson)

Haas scored her third goal of the game in the last minute to lift Stevenson past Naperville Central 4-3 on Saturday.

Erin McCook (Stevenson)

McCook scored from beyond mid-pool at the buzzer to lift Stevenson past Fremd 7-6 on Monday night.

Rebecca Martinez (St Ignatius)

Martinez helped the Wolfpack survive a scare from Latin as she nailed a game-winning shot with one second remaining in regulation to send Ignatius past the Romans 10-9.

Susy Zizumbo (Whitney Young)

Zizumbo sent the CPS title game to overtime after scoring with :04 left in regulation; the Dolphins outscored Lane 2-0 in the extra session to claim the city championship.

Top Goalie Performances

BOYS

Keith Pierzchala (York)

Pierzchala stopped 12 shots and limited Hinsdale South to just 2 goals in York's 8-2 victory in the WSC quarterfinals.

Mike Malecki (Sandburg)

Malecki earned his first career shutout after making 10 saves in a 13-0 win over LWC on Wednesday.

Tommy McGuire (Fenwick)

The Friars' keeper totaled 34 saves in wins over Loyola, Mt Carmel, and St Ignatius to help the team earn another MCAC title in 2012.

GIRLS

Hannah Caywood (New Trier)

Caywood totaled 44 saves in the Trevians' three-game run to the CSL title over the weekend. She also totaled 17 saves in wins over Naperville North and Wheeling during Week 9.

Julie Conrath (Fremd)

Conrath earned her 1,000 total save in her three-year career and set a personal-best mark of 354 saves in a single-season for a Vikings' team that finished with a 24-5 record.

Nya Wilkins (Young)

WIlkins made 20 saves and held Lane to one goal from the second period through overtime to help the Dolphins win the CPS title 7-5 on Saturday.

Biggest Surprises

BOYS

Maine South Is For Real

The Hawks showed just how dangerous they could be early in the season when they stunned then #11 GBS. Monday, the Hawks upset #15 Fremd and solidified their candidacy for the team no one will want to face in next week's playoffs.

Niles West Beats Evanston

The climb has been steady, but the Wolves continued their upward trajectory by beating Evanston 13-11 on Friday in the CSL quarterfinal round.

GIRLS

Maine South Advances To CSL Final

The Hawks have been quite good this year, finishing third in the CSL and finishing above .500 for the first time in team history. But to make it to the conference finals with two straight wins already? Impressive.

Sandburg Grabs Share of SWSC Blue Title

The Eagles trailed rivals H-F by one game entering the final week of the season, plus they had to face both the Vikings and Lincoln-Way Central in Week 9. They responded by beating the Knights 11-6 on Wednesday and then knocked off H-F 12-8 on Friday to share the title with the Vikings.
