State Championship: Fenwick 16 St Ignatius 9
LINCOLNSHIRE, IL - Fenwick wasted no time
taking care of business on Saturday night, as they jumped out to a 4-0
lead in the opening quarter and beat St Ignatius 16-9 to claim their
eighth straight state title. Matt Farmer registered four goals, Connor
Brown and Dominic Gallo each scored three times, and Rich Mueller and
Viken Huening both totaled two scores as the Friars knocked off their
Catholic League rivals to emerge as the 2011 title-winners.
The Wolfpack didn't let the Friars coast, as
Mark Alvarado scored the first of his five goals early in the second
period to cut the Friars' lead to 4-1. But Farmer, Brown, and especially
goalie Dan Newell proved to be too tough for the Wolfpack to compete
against, as the Friars pulled out to a 7-2 halftime lead and extended
their advantage to 13-7 entering the final quarter.
Every play was tightly contested, but the
teams broke loose in the third period to combine to score eleven goals
in a wide-open seven minute stretch. Ignatius knew they would need to
score quickly in the final period to have a chance to comeback, but
Newell stopped three shots during the first two minutes of the frame to
keep Fenwick ahead by six. So when Brown found Gallo open for a goal
midway through the period, that was all she wrote for the Wolfpack. The
teams traded goals down the stretch but the Friars were determined to
walk away with another title, which they sealed when Mueller scored in
the final two minutes of the game as the Friars' bench erupted.
Along with Alvarado's five scores, Kevin
Barth scored two times and both Brayden Amendola and Tom Maloney nicked
goals in the loss for the Wolfpack.
