State Championship: Fenwick 9 Stevenson 6
LINCOLNSHIRE, IL - Fenwick jumped out to a
4-1 lead in the first quarter and held off a tough Stevenson team the
rest of the way to earn a 9-6 win over the Patriots in the state
championship game on Saturday night. Annie Collins scored four goals in
her final high school game and Cara Borkovec tallied two scores in the
opening period to lead the Friars to their third straight win over the
weekend and their sixth state title since the IHSA sanctioned water polo
as a sport in 2002.
Stevenson tried to pull off their third
straight upset of the weekend, as they narrowed the gap to 5-3 when
Cheyenne Montijo converted a penalty shot midway through the second
period. But Collins was not willing to lose her final game, as she
scored a key goal right before halftime to give Fenwick the momentum and
a 6-3 lead at the break.
Collins wasted no time taking care of
business in the second half, scoring less than two minutes into the
third period to give Fenwick a four-goal cushion. Stevenson scored a
goal late in the period to cut the lead to 7-4, but Haley Wickham's goal
at the end of the third period put Fenwick ahead 8-4 with seven minutes
remaining.
The Friars seemed determined to whittle the
clock down, but Stevenson's Karen Lowry was just as determined not to
lose the final game of her career, as she scored two straight goals to
cut Fenwick's lead to 8-6 midway through the last quarter. That made
Fenwick sweat a little bit, but Friars' goalie Mackenzie Bonk made two
critical saves and freshman Alexa Ovalle scored with one minute left,
sealing the title game win for Fenwick.
Collins scored 4 times and Borkovec added 2
goals for Fenwick. Ovalle, Wendt, and Wickham also tallied goals for the
Friars in the win.
Lowry scored 3 goals, Montijo put in 2 goals
on penalty shots, and Erin McCook tallied one score in the loss for the
Patriots.
