Consolation Game: Loyola 9 Sandburg 5
LINCOLNSHIRE, IL - Loyola used a 5-0 run to
pull away from Sandburg en route to a 9-5 victory in the third-place
game on Saturday night in Lincolnshire. The Ramblers trailed by a goal
early, but junior Charlie Dowdle scored five goals in a row between the
second and third quarters to lead Loyola to the season-ending win.
Balys Gintautas and Matt Veldman tried to
get the Eagles back in the game, as each scored two goals for Sandburg.
But Loyola's Tim Netzel picked up where Dowdle left off, scoring four
straight goals in the second half to keep the Ramblers consistently
ahead of the Eagles until the end of the game.
Loyola's third-place finish is their best
since water polo became an IHSA sport, while Sandburg's senior-laden
group just ran out of steam on Saturday after putting in an
extraordinary effort in Friday's overtime win over Naperville Central.
