Tournament Report
By Aaron Brown
The regular season came to a
close over the weekend, with several teams participating in conference
tournaments or other events across the state. Here is a closer look at what went
down in the final weekend of the season:
CPS
Tournament
Lane earned their 25th win in a row when they beat
Northside 6-1 in the CPS Tournament title game on Saturday. The Indians
earned a 10-0 shutout win over Payton in the semifinals to get there,
while NSP earned a 14-6 win over Curie to advance to the final game.
Curie defeated Young 5-2 to finish in third place.
CSL Tournament
New Trier rolled to the CSL Tournament title by beating
GBN in the final game by an 11-6 score. The Trevians also knocked off Deer
Park in the semifinals after securing a first-round bye in the event. GBN
had secured victories over GBS and Maine West to advance to the
tournament's championship game.
Deer Park outlasted GBS 6-5 in overtime to finish in
the third position, while Maine South cruised to a 16-4 win over Maine
East in the fifth-place game.
MCAC Tournament
The Catholic League title featured four of the top ten
teams, so there were plenty of fireworks to be expected at Fenwick over
the weekend. The games did not disappoint, as #5 Loyola beat #1 Fenwick
6-5 in the semifinals to advance to the title game. They met #4 St
Ignatius, who earned a 7-5 win over #10 Mother McAuley in the other
semfinal game.
In the championship, St Ignatius responded to an early
one-goal deficit by building a 4-2 halftime lead and never letting the
Ramblers reclaim the lead in a 9-6 victory.
Fenwick bounced back to beat McAuley 12-8 in the third
place game.
MSL Championship
Fremd won their fourth straight MSL Championship by beating Prospect 13-2
in Wednesday night's title game.
Mundelein
Tournament
Mundelein geared up for the postseason by earning wins over Buffalo Grove,
Latin, and Prospect on Saturday to claim their own tournament title. The
Mustangs' held each team to just five goals per game in finishing with a
3-0 mark.
Prospect edged fellow MSL member Buffalo Grove by a 9-6 score for second
place, while BG topped Latin in the day's last game 11-5 to finish in
third position. The Romans ended the day with an 0-3 mark.
Stevenson Tournament
Naperville Central held off Stevenson 7-5 in the tournament's first game,
then cruised to wins over LWC and Neuqua Valley to win the event with a
3-0 record. Stevenson bounced back from the loss to earn wins over LWC and
Neuqua later in the day to finish in second place, while the Knights
topped the Wildcats 10-6 to finish in the third position.
WSC Tournament
Lyons allowed only four goals in two games on Saturday to win the West
Suburban Conference Tournament at their home pool. The Lions beat Oak Park
13-3 in the title game after defeating Morton 16-1 in the semifinals. The
Huskies made it to the last game by earning a 10-3 victory over Hinsdale
South.
